Culture, Power, And Control: A Discussion Of Autonomy And Responsibility, Loren A. Alonso
Culture, Power, And Control: A Discussion Of Autonomy And Responsibility, Loren A. Alonso
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to explore how power, control, autonomy, and responsibility are active participants in culture and daily human life. First, I discuss two understandings of power, structured and diffused. I examine some different techniques of power that help support and reproduce the current power systems in place and how historically, these systems have been predominantly unjust. I then discuss an alternative view of power that incorporates both structured and diffused forms of power. I explain why this new understanding of power could be more useful in actively shifting the current unjust power structures present in the …
Spinoza On Miracles, Charles H. Smith
Spinoza On Miracles, Charles H. Smith
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
Baruch Spinoza's approach to the subject of miracles was distinctly naturalistic. Instead of believing that God and nature consisted of separate domains (and that miracles represented supra-natural phenomena), he argued that they were one and the same. Thus, "miracle" is a pseudo-category, and those occurrences that we label with that word are actually natural phenomena whose rational causes are not yet understood.
Doxastic Voluntarism And Religious Diversity, Naomi Smith
Doxastic Voluntarism And Religious Diversity, Naomi Smith
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The reality of religious diversity raises questions about belief-formation, rationality, and epistemic peerhood. Doxastic voluntarism, the view that we can choose to form certain beliefs, is one proposed account of how we form beliefs in the absence of empirical evidence or conclusive reasoning, which is generally the case with religious beliefs. Direct doxastic voluntarism is the view that in some cases, we exercise immediate control over the beliefs we form. Indirect doxastic voluntarism is the view that we can only exercise control over some factors surrounding the belief-formation process but that this control nonetheless constitutes a choice of belief. I …
Inevitably Dying: The Role Of Ideological Legacy-Derived Death Anxieties In Subverting Mortality Salience, Christina Fuleihan
Inevitably Dying: The Role Of Ideological Legacy-Derived Death Anxieties In Subverting Mortality Salience, Christina Fuleihan
Honors Program Theses
Existential debates – regarding life, death, and the states which potentially succeed existence – have widespread spiritual and ethical implications for general society. Rather than aimlessly questioning the metaphysical value of death on life, there are clear bioethical applications to exploring exaggerated human death anxieties. These fears are unique to our species and have wide-spread societal repercussions. By and large, discomfort with the notion of mortality permeates unequivocally throughout our species’ histories. We become our own worst enemies when we fail to admit and confront the inevitability of death. The lack of mortality salience encouraged by our trepidations fuels an …

Self-Ownership As Personal Sovereignty, John Thrasher
Self-Ownership As Personal Sovereignty, John Thrasher
Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research
Self-ownership has fallen out of favor as a core moral and political concept. I argue that this is because the most popular conception of self-ownership, what I call the property conception, is typically linked to a libertarian (of the left or right) political program. Seeing self-ownership and libertarianism as being necessarily linked leads those who are not inclined toward libertarianism to reject the idea of self-ownership altogether. This, I argue, is mistaken. Self-ownership is a crucial moral and political concept that can earn its keep if we understand it not as type of property right in the self, but rather …
Hyletic Phenomenology And Hyperobjects, Seth Daves
Hyletic Phenomenology And Hyperobjects, Seth Daves
Philosophy Faculty Publications
In this paper, I attempt to argue alongside Clayton Crockett that Timothy Morton’s hyperobjects can be extended to encompass every object, not merely those that are large in comparison to human beings. However, unlike Crockett who uses the works of Derrida and Lacan to achieve this goal, I turn to Husserl’s underdeveloped theory of hyletic phenomenology and hyle. Despite Husserl’s articulation of hyletic phenomenology ending as quickly as it is announced, I argue that three lessons can be learned from what Husserl does have to say about hyle. Specifically, hyle is non-intentional, it is co-constitutive of intentionality, and hyle contains …
To Be Or Not To Be: Examining The Role Of Language In A Concept Of Negation, Ann E. Nordmeyer, Jill De Villiers
To Be Or Not To Be: Examining The Role Of Language In A Concept Of Negation, Ann E. Nordmeyer, Jill De Villiers
Philosophy: Faculty Publications
Negation is a complex, abstract concept, despite the ubiquity of words like “no” and “not” in even young children’s speech. One challenging aspect to words like “no” and “not” is that these words can serve many functions in speech, giving us tools to express an array of concepts such as denial, refusal, and nonexistence. Is there a single concept of “negation” that unites these separate negative functions – and if so, does understanding this concept require the structure of human language? In this paper we present a study demonstrating that adults spontaneously identify a concept of negation in the absence …

The Early Flew To The Later Flew, George Beals
The Early Flew To The Later Flew, George Beals
West Chester University Master’s Theses
This project examines the thinking of British philosopher Antony Flew (1923-2010), who is considered a leading atheist during the last half of the twentieth century and a leading scholar on David Hume. But early in the twenty-first century (2004), he announced that his thinking had led him to deny atheism and affirm theism. After the Introduction, this project focuses on his writings and debates on the existence of God, doing so in four chapters: Laying the Groundwork; Atheist Antony Flew; Theist Antony Flew; and Assessment. In Laying the Groundwork I identify four guiding principles that …
The Quest Of Vision: Visual Culture, Sacred Space, Ritual, And The Documentation Of Lived Experience Through Rock Imagery, Aaron Robert Atencio
The Quest Of Vision: Visual Culture, Sacred Space, Ritual, And The Documentation Of Lived Experience Through Rock Imagery, Aaron Robert Atencio
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This document will approach the multifaceted concepts that arise through the study of rock art and the cultivation of culture and belief through vision. Through this document the audience will encounter conceptual ideas regarding belief systems, ritual, experience, cognition, sacredness, and space/landscape — and how these are all essential dynamics that take place in the processes that cultivate the Shoshone visual culture. This document will employ an anthropological lens on the mentioned subject matters, while also approaching these concepts with an interdisciplinary curiosity of how they intermingle; creating a cohesive experience that focuses on these processes which empowered these people[s] …
Can Nonhumans Be Victims Of Genocide?, Kirstin Waldkoenig
Can Nonhumans Be Victims Of Genocide?, Kirstin Waldkoenig
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
“Genocide” appears commonly in critical animal studies literature and sparsely in philosophy to describe human-caused violence against nonhuman beings. However, such uses of the term have rarely been informed by relevant work in genocide studies, nor otherwise formally substantiated. This thesis explores what is at stake when employing the term and proposes a model for appropriate application to nonhuman contexts. Claudia Card’s notion of genocide as social death allows for the consideration of nonhuman animals as victims of genocide. Social vitality is important to the lives of some nonhuman animals and its forcible diminishment results in social death for those …

Eroticism As A Metaphor For The Human-Divine Relationhip In Attar’S Conference Of The Birds, Or Mantiqu’T-Tair, Marisa Sikes
Eroticism As A Metaphor For The Human-Divine Relationhip In Attar’S Conference Of The Birds, Or Mantiqu’T-Tair, Marisa Sikes
Quidditas
Farídu’d-Dín Ἁṭṭār’s The Speech of the Birds employs transgressive erotic imagery in multiple sub-tales in ways that both enhance the frame tale’s significance and suggest that persistent, discrete categories of love poetry and religious poetry are untenable as far as Ἁṭṭār’s works are concerned. Eroticism in Ἁṭṭār’s work paradoxically elicits shock and supports orthodoxy, sometimes simultaneously. In the narrative of Shaikh-i Sam’ān religious taboos are broken by a Muslim shaikh devoted to a Christian beloved who spurns him continuously. In “The Princess and the Beautiful Slave-Boy” eroticism is overtly presented as a metaphor for temporary, ecstatic union with the divine. …

The New White Moderate: Bearing Witness To The Differend Of Race, Ethan T. Ashley
The New White Moderate: Bearing Witness To The Differend Of Race, Ethan T. Ashley
Honors Theses
As Frantz Fanon demonstrates in his text, Black Skin, White Masks, Sartrean existentialism fails to account for differences in racialized existence. Quite simply, the notion that “existence precedes essence” is reversed in the case of the black subject; he/she is living in a world that has rendered the black subject subservient to a predetermined essence. Ultimately, the fact that the white subject exists and may freely determine his/her essence while the black subject may not further demonstrates this gap or a chasm between black and white subjects that calls for further examination. In the first chapter, I will use …
(And I Can't Stress This Enough) In My Mouth: Extradiegetic Affect As Material, C. Klockner
(And I Can't Stress This Enough) In My Mouth: Extradiegetic Affect As Material, C. Klockner
Theses and Dissertations
(and i can’t stress this enough) in my mouth: Extradiegetic Affect as Material is a non-linear exploration into the structures of feeling that exist in relation to cinema in its role as a technology for generating subjectivity. In the development of this research, a proposal of cinema’s likeness to the ecological circulation of microplastics is drawn in order to illustrate cinema’s materiality and nearly invisible ubiquity. The notion of extradiegetic affect is outlined as a post-cinematic condition in which lived experience becomes secondary to cinematic representation and which, simultaneously, becomes directly shaped by engaging with these representations.

Untitled Unknown, Taylor Simone Stewart
Theses and Dissertations
This article is the first of a series exploring domination culture through the ways narrative has been indoctrinated as reality and weaponized as a holding cell for captives. Within this exploration, the narrative of domination is placed in relation to higher dimensional realms of the unknown; this being the before and after of domination culture. This positioning will allow for the reality of a simultaneous existence within the labyrinth of domination and a higher dimensional unknown to be framed. Within this series of articles, I question the roll of the rogue characters shamanistic agents of resisting domination, the fear of …

Homelessness Status Among Female Veterans: Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Depression, And Hopelessness, Shorrelle Sheri Kennedy
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Homelessness among female veterans is a problem that is likely to increase as growing numbers of women in the United States military reestablish themselves into their communities as veterans. The purpose of this quantitavie quasi-experimental study was to determine whether there are differences in posttraumatic stress (PTSD), depression, and hopelessness in homeless versus nonhomeless female veterans who have experienced at least 1 U.S. military deployment. Four theories served as the basis for this research: the cognitive theory of depression, conditioning theory, ecological theory, and the hopelessness of depression theory. The data were collected from 88 female veterans who were deployed …
Exploring Stages Of Recovery From Crack Cocaine Addiction, Zeb Stuart Regan
Exploring Stages Of Recovery From Crack Cocaine Addiction, Zeb Stuart Regan
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Crack cocaine users need efficacious treatment options to address triggers and cravings for the drug. The purpose of this qualitative, multiple case study was to explore the recovery narratives of 3 purposefully selected substance abuse counselors who were once addicted to crack cocaine and whether or not these narratives fit within the 5 stages of the transtheoretical model of change (TTM). The TTM was used in this study to explore the stages of change in those with prior addiction regarding the motivational strategies needed to promote change. Data collected in face to face interviews were organized using thematic content analysis …
Examining The Experience Of Nepotism In A Protestant Church, Monica L. Austin
Examining The Experience Of Nepotism In A Protestant Church, Monica L. Austin
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The research literature reveals a number of studies conducted on unethical behavior, including nepotism, within the broader nonprofit sector. However, the effect of faith community leadership nepotism on parishioners has not been studied. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to fill a gap in the literature by exploring parishioner perceptions of leadership nepotism through the lens of servant leadership. Specific to this study, it was unknown whether parishioners of a Protestant church view nepotism as having a positive, negative, or neutral impact related to leadership performance. Specifically, the study explored parishioner impacts related to 5 elements of servant leadership: …
Models Dont Decompose That Way: A Holistic View Of Idealized Models, Collin Rice
Models Dont Decompose That Way: A Holistic View Of Idealized Models, Collin Rice
Philosophy Faculty Research and Scholarship
Many (if not most) accounts of scientific modelling assume that models can be decomposed into the contributions made by their accurate and inaccurate parts. These accounts then argue that the inaccurate parts of the model can be justified by distorting only what is irrelevant. In this article, I argue that this decompositional strategy requires three assumptions that are not typically met by our best scientific models. In response, I propose an alternative view in which idealized models are characterized as holistically distorted representations that are justified by allowing for the application of various (mathematical) modelling techniques.

The Neuroethical Role Of Narrative Identity In Ethical Decision Making, Peter A. Depergola Ii
The Neuroethical Role Of Narrative Identity In Ethical Decision Making, Peter A. Depergola Ii
Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
An increasingly blurred understanding of the moral significance of narrative identity for a robust perception of self, other, and community suggests a critical need to explore the inter-relationships shared between autobiographical memory, emotional rationality, and narrative identity, particularly as it bears on decision making. This essay argues that (i) the disintegration of autobiographical memory degenerates emotional rationality; (ii) the degeneration of emotional rationality decays narrative identity; and (iii) the decay of narrative identity disables one to seek, identify, and act on the good. After demonstrating that narrative identity is best understood as the product of autobiographical memory and emotional rationality, …
Towards A Practical And Empirically Grounded Account Of Útang-Na-Loób As A Filipino Virtue, Jacklyn A. Cleofas
Towards A Practical And Empirically Grounded Account Of Útang-Na-Loób As A Filipino Virtue, Jacklyn A. Cleofas
Philosophy Department Faculty Publications
Although there are existing philosophical accounts of útang-na-loób (debt of good will) and the suggestion that this Filipino cultural practice can be considered a virtue is not new, questions remain about how morally desirable forms of útang-na-loób can be separated from its problematic involvement in nepotism, patronage politics, life-long servitude, corruption, and other forms of injustice. In this paper, I develop a practical and empirically grounded account of útang-na-loób as a Filipino virtue by using a neo-Aristotelian framework that allows for the incorporation of research from the social sciences into virtue-theoretic recommendations for action. I argue that útang-na-loób must be …
A Zhuangzian Ethic Of Openness And Hospitality For Contemporary Filipino Society, Joseph Emmanuel D. Sta. Maria
A Zhuangzian Ethic Of Openness And Hospitality For Contemporary Filipino Society, Joseph Emmanuel D. Sta. Maria
Philosophy Department Faculty Publications
In this article, I wish to show that Dr. Agustin Rodriguez's idea of how government institutions in Philippine society should practice hospitality towards the marginalized Other, resonates with and can be complemented by a personal ethic of openness and hospitality drawn from the Daoist work Zhuangzi. According to Rodriguez, poor Filipinos living in urban areas, tend to be misunderstood and marginalized by the rest of the well-to-do class. The reason for this is that these poor live out an alternative rationality or way of life as compared to that of the elite. This marginalized rationality finds it difficult to fit …

Sex(Edness) In The City: Reimagining Our Urban Spaces With Abraham Akkerman, Duane Allyson U. Gravador-Pancho
Philosophy Department Faculty Publications
In this essay, Duane Allyson U. Gravador-Pancho foregrounds the gendered origins of the cities that we build. Taking her cue from Akkerman, Gravador-Pancho outlines the predominantly masculine characteristics of most cities, which coincides with the privileging of Western rationality that emphasizes rigidity and predictability in urban design. Such a predominantly masculine conception and design of the city comes at the cost of setting aside characteristics that are feminine, such as the elements of surprise and eroticism. But how would a city look like if we allowed the feminine to also come into play? “In the context of urban planning and …
Artificial Intelligence And Utility : Deep Problems For A.I. Ethics, Trevor Howard Groves
Artificial Intelligence And Utility : Deep Problems For A.I. Ethics, Trevor Howard Groves
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
As technology advances further, new problems arise for us to contend with philosophically. Indeed, popular media has already begun presenting the possible issues our society must deal with. One of these is A.I., and how they will challenge old notions of subjects like identity, consciousness, and ethics. It is this third category that this paper is concerned with, namely how the existence of A.I. will affect our choice of ethical theory in regards to their treatment. It is my intention to demonstrate that one particular category of ethical theory, hedonistic consequentialist ones, will be ill equipped to handle these considerations. …
