Of what importance is this question of atheism? Always of vital consequence to man and mankind, it presents today the paramount problem confronting humanity. In every nation, in every class of society we see godlessness daily making further encroachments upon the domains wherein formerly man was safely protected by faith in God. In Russia and Mexico atheism bas become a part of political domination; the German government seems constantly more eager to foist paganism upon its people; in America only fifty percent of the people are enrolled in any church.

The Great Plains, in 1840 appeared to those living in the Eastern part of the country.as a forbidden land which man was never to occupy. This land was barren except for the roaming Indian tribes, a few trappers and hardy frontiersmen who moved West. In log homes near Santa Fe some of the braver families had settled; a few forts had been constructed for trade with the Indian and for protection. Other than the early settlers mentioned, none ventured beyond the Missouri river, and the Great Plains were barren, wind-swept lands, later to be conquered and settled.

During class discussions in the years 1932 and 1933 the questions were often advanced as to whether the common or elementary form of arithmetic as taught in American schools and expressed by the use of numerals was not stressed unduly, in view of its importance or influence on the future life of the student. It seemed to the writer that the answer to at least a part of this question might be found in a survey of the actual usage or occurrence of arithmetical forms as expressed in numerals.

To alleviate this increasing burden on the taxpayers as well as to help the unemployed two barter exchanges were organized by means of which the unemployed might meet their own and one another's needs through their own efforts, that is by means of barter or direct exchange of commodity for commodity. It appears after exhaustive search that no complete English translation of Abelard's Ethics is available. Accordingly, not all students of philosophy have been able to use the primary source to study the system of ethics introduced by Abelard. The secondary sources or commentaries in English in most instances do not offer sufficient material for a complete understanding and appreciation of the innovation made by Abelard in the field of ethics. To furnish a translation of his Ethics is therefore the fundamental purpose of this thesis.
