The problem of this study was to determine if William James‘s philosophy of Pragmatism offers the possibility for discovering meaning in life for the person who unexplainably suffers depression and melancholia, and a religious explana­tion for the evolutionary scientific person who suffers a religious-scientific crisis.

The methods used were to examine William James’s lectures, letters, and books, and research the literature for his interpretation of Pragmatism as a philosophy. The procedure analyzed the possibilities James offered for finding meaning in life, with or without religion, by using the Pragmatic Theory of truth. Søren Kierkegaard in his journals and papers, as well as in his published writings, emphasized the category of the individual so strongly that it has been assumed by some readers that he advocated a hermit-like existence which precludes relationships with other individuals. Kierkegaard, himself', was cognizant of this interpretation of his writings in 1848 when he wrote in his journal: “I am accused of leading young men to rest satisfied in their own subjectivity.”

Painting And Language: A Pictoral Syntax Of Shapes, Curtis Carter

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

In previous articles, the author proposed that paintings can have syntactic rules. In this article he develops his proposal further and shows that shapes act as syntactic elements in the languages of painting styles. He meets Nelson Goodman's objections to his proposal by showing that shapes meet the criterion of syntactic discreteness proposed by the latter to separate linguistic from other symbolic systems. His approach is to specify style as the domain of a language of painting, to show that style is syntactical and to argue that shapes are the primitive syntactic elements of style. In the lectures on aesthetics that he delivered in 1963-64 at the University of Frankfurt, Heinrich Böll enunciated a precept that is too often forgotten, or at least ignored, by literary scholars and critics. “The content of a prose work, after all, is its presupposition, a gift; and you shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth.” Böll does not mean, of course, that content is irrelevant; but he suggests that criticism often neglects to concern itself with that aspect of the literary work that is specifically aesthetic: its form. “Recapitulation of plot without analysis of form makes possible all …

Perhaps the least discussed—and for that reason least understood—of the multitudinous facets of Thomas Mann's writings has been that which concerns his image of the Jew. Generally, the subject is not mentioned even in the more comprehensive studies of Mann's works. The story which deals most directly with a Jewish theme, The Blood of the Volsungs (Wälsungenblut, 1905), has attracted relatively little critical attention. This is remarkable for two reasons. Elements of folklore in literature—motif and/or symbol—tend to be archetypal by nature. This is eminently true of Busch’s weird skull and mysterious mouse. A perceptive reader senses a symbolic level even in the humorous poem. Goethe’s remarks on motif, symbol, and folk-tale can serve here as an introduction to our examination of what appears to be a mere light verse tale.

The following interpretation of Goethe’s poem "Das Gottliche" is not entirely original: If one considers the fame of the poem—who does not know by heart its first verse?—and the quantity of Goethe scholarship, it stands to reason that some of the ideas presented here can be found elsewhere. We will refer to such agreement at the appropriate place in the article. However, there are major points in our reading of "Das Gottliche" that are original and that let us see the poem in a new light.

In the eyes of Marxist theorists fascism is seen as the most immediate and brutal manifestation of imperialism ; that is, it is a form of capitalism which seizes upon right-radical elements of society during times of economic and social upheaval in an effort to maintain a system of total suppression and control of public opinion. Formal mathematical logic is designed to capture the logical form of mathematical statements, all of which employ precisely defined concepts, unlike the concepts found in natural languages, almost all of which are vague. In this paper I argue that in order to more accurately represent the logical form of vague natural language statements, formal logic should employ degrees of truth and falsehood, rather than assuming just the two truth “values” T and F. I explore in detail the most reasonable definitions for basic logical operations in a system that allows for degrees of truth, concluding that one of the multi-valued …
