The Necessary A Posteriori: A Response To Tichý, Curtis Brown

Pavel Tichý, in a recent article, ¹ argues that Saul Kripke's purported examples of necessary a posteriori truths² are unsuccessful. I am sympathetic to some of Tichý's assumptions and to some of his conclusions. But his arguments seem misguided to me, and I will try to explain why.

In Section II, I discuss Tichý criticism of Kripke's treatment of the Hesperus-Phosphorus example. That criticism is seen to rest on the assumption that sentences which express the same proposition are interchangeable in epistemic contexts, an assumption Kripke would not accept. Nevertheless a revised version of Tichý's criticism may be successful. …

The movement of philosophical ideas across national and linguistic borders, especially in these days of international conferences, is notoriously slower than the physical movements of philosophers themselves. When rumblings of new names or new ideas come from afar, there is a rather predictable but unphilosophical tendency to claim that the putative new thoughts are either old hat, trivial or absurd; this trichotomy is not much of an improvement on the older positivistic dichotomy of tautologically trivial or merely empirical. While Aristotle's treatment of emotion has in recent years received considerable attention, Theophrastus' work on the same subject has been mostly ignored. The reason for this neglect is that the relevant material has not been readily accessible, but with the publication of my Quellen zur Ethik Theophrasts that obstacle has been largely removed. Texts whose primary focus is emotional response have been brought together under the heading "Affecte" (L1-L11) and other relevant texts are included elsewhere in the volume. This paper has two main claims: First, it will argue that most of what is usually interpreted as Plato's ethics is concerned primarily with the establishing a Substantive Theory of the Good. Secondly, it will be shown that Plato's link between his STG and matters of obligation is a very close one, and cannot be analyzed along either utilitarian or Kantian lines.

These Centenary Lectures are devoted to the "tension between rule and policy" in adjudication. The charge to the lecturers suggests it is "naive" to suppose that "the proper function of a court is to apply an established rule of law to the dispute before it." This topic has been a focus of legal theory at least since Holmes delivered his famous lecture, "The Path of the Law"--nearly as long as law has been taught at the University of California. It merits our continuing study.

Though it would be impossible to claim for Thomas Blenerhasset's A Revelation of the true Minerva (15820 a place among the major works of Elizabethan literature, the poem deserves more than the cursory references it sometimes receives as an early indication of the influence of The Shepheardes Calender (1579) upon English verse. Not only does Blenerhasset's narrative poem suggest ways in which an alert and cultivated reader might respond to Spenser's first published poem, but A Revelation contains tantalizing clues to that rare metamorphosis accomplished by English writers in the reign of Elizabeth, a process by which Tudor poets, like …

In his 1983 article, Paul A. Roth defends the Quinean project of naturalized epistemology from the criticism presented in my 1980 article. In this note I would like to respond to Roth's effort. I will argue that, while helpful in advancing and clarifying the issues, Roth's defense of naturalized epistemology does not succeed. The primary topic to be clarified is Quine's "no first philosophy" doctrine; but I will address myself to other points as well.
