Reliability On The Crowded Net: Finding The Truth In A Web Of Deceit, P.D. Magnus Jan 2001

Reliability On The Crowded Net: Finding The Truth In A Web Of Deceit, P.D. Magnus

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

On-line, just as off-line, there are ways of assessing the credibility of information sources. The Internet, although it arguably makes for nothing wholly new in this regard, complicates the ordinary task of assessing credibility. In the first section, I consider a specific example and argue that Internet contentproviders have no clear interest in resolving these comlications. In the second, I consider four general ways that we might assess credibility and explore how they apply to life online. Finally, I argue that even careful information gathering may pose subtle pitfalls but that some of these may be mitigated on-line.

The Instability Of The Standard Justification For Physician-Assisted Suicide, Thomas A. Cavanaugh Jan 2001

The Instability Of The Standard Justification For Physician-Assisted Suicide, Thomas A. Cavanaugh

Philosophy

Proponents commonly justify the legalization of physician-assisted suicide (PAS) in terms of a patient's wanting to die (autonomy) and the patient's having a medically established good reason for suicide. These are the common elements of the standard justification offered for the legalization of PAS. In what follows, I argue that these two conditions exist in significant tension with one another, operating according to distinct dynamics that render the justification for PAS an unstable “let it be so” basis for public policy. Moreover, no natural connection keeps these two criteria united. Indeed—as I argue—the two elements of the justification oppose and …

And Unto Dust Return: The Remembered Earth, Lawrence Kimmel Jan 2001

And Unto Dust Return: The Remembered Earth, Lawrence Kimmel

Philosophy Faculty Research

The earth is a primal resource of human imagination; its conceptual and creative tie to literature is pervasive, in part, because of the profound ambiguity of our relationship to it. Home and prison, earth holds in bondage the life it sustains. The paradox of life as freedom and life as bondage gives rise to the conflicting task of holding to the good earth, yet becoming free of it. This paradox and conflicting effort forms a basic pattern in western thought. A deep ambivalence and generative tension frames metaphors in literature from the earliest mythic and creation stories to the most …

Reconciliation And Harmony: The Philosophical Art Of Tragic Drama, Lawrence Kimmel Jan 2001

Reconciliation And Harmony: The Philosophical Art Of Tragic Drama, Lawrence Kimmel

Philosophy Faculty Research

In the performance of art one can begin at the beginning, but in a discussion of art one must begin somewhere in the middle. Here, it is with the conviction that art, in whatever form, though it may surprise the sense and quicken the spirit, disturb our thinking or revoke a thoughtless ease, still, its full expression restores a sense of presence and wholeness to our being. That is, every art form has a point of closure in a harmony of the spirit. Even tragic drama, which brings the darkness of human character into a glare of recognition and acceptance, …

Psychoanalytic Praxis And The Truth Of Pain, William J. Richardson Jan 2001

Psychoanalytic Praxis And The Truth Of Pain, William J. Richardson

Research Resources

William J. Richardson’s, “Psychoanalytic Praxis and the Truth of Pain” critically reviews Lacan’s conception of science, truth, and language above all. For Lacan, speaking of the “subject of science,” it is as if the entire scientific enterprise – its history, its institutions and all the virulence of its burgeoning power – may be conceived as the function of a single hypostasized, egoless subject: the “correlate” of science as such, taken as a whole. Reading Lacan’s essay “Science and Truth,” Richardson offers a philosophical outline of the strengths of Lacan’s analysis along with its limitations, including a discussion of Heidegger's aletheia …

Sokal’S Hermeneutic Hoax: Physics And The New Inquisition, Babette Babich Jan 2001

Sokal’S Hermeneutic Hoax: Physics And The New Inquisition, Babette Babich

Research Resources

“The Hermeneutics of a Hoax: Physics and the New Inquisition” offers a rhetorical analysis and hermeneutics reading of the parodic character of Sokal's "hoax." From the perspective of a philosopher of science, it is argued that it is important to attend both to the rhetorical level of philosophy and science. In addition it is important to consider the culture of status (Bourdieu) as well as the self-reflective weaknesses of the culture of physics including those of (traditionally) physics-dominated philosophy of science. Echoing some of the criticisms and highlighting the points of social advocacy of the late Paul Feyerabend underscores the …

Latin Grammar In The Cathedral School: Fulbert Of Chartres, Bonipert Of Pécs, And The Way Of A Lost Priscian Manuscript, Elöd Nemerkényi Jan 2001

Latin Grammar In The Cathedral School: Fulbert Of Chartres, Bonipert Of Pécs, And The Way Of A Lost Priscian Manuscript, Elöd Nemerkényi

Quidditas

The starting point of the classical tradition in medieval Hungary is marked by a letter written by Bishop Fulbert of Chartres in Northern France to Bishop Bonipert of Pécs in Southern Hungary. In this letter, dated by its editor to 1023, Fulbert assured his colleague, Bonipert that he was going to send him one of his copies of Priscian: “Our son and your faithful servant Hilduin has told us of your gestures of charity toward us and dutifully stated that you would like one of our copies of Priscian. We are happy to send this by him, and whatever else …

“True” History And Political Theory: The Problematic Orthodoxy Of The Troublesome Raigne Of King John, Cynthia Bowers Jan 2001

“True” History And Political Theory: The Problematic Orthodoxy Of The Troublesome Raigne Of King John, Cynthia Bowers

Quidditas

The anonymous Troublesome Raigne of King John was performed by the Queen's Men probably during the height of the Armada crisis; it appeared in print in 1591. The play's few critics unanimously conclude that it is essentially a work of propaganda, a monument to Tudor orthodoxy and its principal buttress, obedience doctrine. Scott McMillin and Sally-Beth MacLean, recent historians of the Queen’s Men, add to the critical consensus their belief that Troublesome Raigne, like other Queen’s Men’s plays, attempts to convey “true” history, i.e., history consistent with official Tudor political and religious policy. The formation of the company and …
