Delno C. West Award Winner: Tradition And Originality In El Greco’S Work: His Synthesis Of Byzantine And Renaissance Conceptions Of Art, Richard G. Mann

Quidditas

Domenicos Theotokopoulos (1541–1614), usually called El Greco, had one of the most unusual "career paths" of any artist of his era. In less than a decade, he transformed himself from a Byzantine icon painter into one of the most innovative artists of the western European Renaissance. His Spanish contemporaries had no difficulty in acknowledging the significance of his origins. Thus, the court poet Paravicino declared “Creta le dió la vida y los pinceles” (Crete gave him life and the painter’s craft). Nevertheless, most North American and western European scholars of the modern era have maintained that his initial experiences as …

The Demonization Of Sidney’S Cecropia: Erasing A Legal Identity, Stephanie Chamberlain Jan 2002

The Demonization Of Sidney’S Cecropia: Erasing A Legal Identity, Stephanie Chamberlain

Quidditas

In October fo 1533, fourteen-year-old Catherine de' Medici married Henri, duc d'Orléans in a union meant to secure a favorable political alliance between Francis I, the King of France and Pope Clement VII, her uncle and legal guardian. When, however, the Pope unexpectedly died less than a year later, Catherine’s symbolic worth virtually died as well: leaving a less than enamored France to bear the burden of one whose status, as R. J. Knecht has noted, “was immediately reduced to that of a foreigner of relatively modest origins.”1 When Henri unexpectedly died following a ceremonial jousting match in 1559, Catherine …

Islam and Confucianism are two great traditions of mainly Asian people. which have encountered in China since very beginning of Islam's advent to this world, and are in direct confrontation to one another especially in the South East Asian and Pacific Region in the modern time. Analisis Pemikiran Islam Dalam Karya Joesoef Sou'yb, Tirmizi Jan 2002

Analisis Pemikiran Islam Dalam Karya Joesoef Sou'yb, Tirmizi

Student Works (2000-2009)

Islamic thought in the works of Joesoef Sou'yb is a continuation of Islamic thought which have ever developed since the Mu'tazilite, Syeikh Muhammad bin 'Abdul Wahhab and Syeih Jamaluddin al- Afghan,, Syeikh Muhammad 'Abduh with his disciple Muhammad Rasyld Rida. His thought is a combination of Mu'tazilite rationalism, Syeikh 'Abdul Wahaib's spirit of reformism one of the signal thought salaif Muhammad 'Abduh's Islamic reformism-modernism. All ideas have taken place in Joesoefs thought completely. The main reason for such difficult identification is mainly due to the fact that Joesoef has inadequate relevant knowledge to the issues discussed by him. His interest …

[Introduction To] On The Epistemology Of The Senses In Early Chinese Thought, Jane Geaney Jan 2002

[Introduction To] On The Epistemology Of The Senses In Early Chinese Thought, Jane Geaney

Bookshelf

Sense perception, which is of enormous importance in Western philosophical traditions, has scarcely attracted the notice of scholars of early China. As a result of little direct comment on the senses in the Chinese philosophical classics, sinologists have generally interpreted their occasional references to sense functions in familiar Western philosophical terms. This original work challenges this tradition, arguing that despite the scarcity of direct comment on the senses in these sources, it is possible to discern early Chinese views of sensory functions from a close reading of the texts. Working with metaphorical and structural analysis, the author reconstructs an understanding …

An Exploration Of The Transcending Experience In The Art-Making Process, Veronica Aldous Jan 2002

An Exploration Of The Transcending Experience In The Art-Making Process, Veronica Aldous

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study explored the transcending experience as described by visual artists that sometimes occurs during the art-making process. The exploration was conducted within a philosophical framework informed by the researcher's practice of Transcendental Meditation (TM). From this perspective, transcending is related to personal, inner (subjective), and ephemeral aesthetic experiences which never-the-less make a powerful contribution to the visual artist's experience of the creative process and to a lesser extent, the final product. The focus of the study was on the identification and documentation of the personal and subjective aspects of art-making. The study consisted of two parts; (a) this written …

Aristotle On Knowledge, Nous And The Problems Of Necessary Truth, Thomas Kiefer Dec 2001

Aristotle On Knowledge, Nous And The Problems Of Necessary Truth, Thomas Kiefer

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

In this paper, I argue that nous for Aristotle concerns necessary truths. (1) Nous is the solution to the dilemma raised in Posterior Analytics I.3. (2) Knowledge and nous have necessary truths as their subject matter, and are identical to this subject matter. (3) This position creates two problems concerning (i) the innateness of knowledge and nous, and (ii) the mind-dependency of necessary truths. (4) The end of DA III.5 reveals an attempt to solve (i) and (ii): The necessary truths of knowledge and nous are for us innate in a certain way, appear to come to be and pass …
