Hegel, Antigone, And Women, Philip J. Kain Jan 2002

Hegel, Antigone, And Women, Philip J. Kain

Philosophy

When Hegel turns to a treatment of culture in Chapter VI of the Phenomenology—as anyone who has read his early writings would expect1—he begins with the ancient Greek polis. There the human spirit first fully emancipated itself from nature as it had not, in Hegel’s opinion, in Egypt; yet it was still in perfect harmony and balance with the natural. In Hegel’s view, this was an age of beaut y that produced a social community and an ethical life where citizens were free and at home. What is a bit surprising, though, is that in the Phenomenology Hegel does not …

(Lilya: Ukrainian Translation Of Elfie Novel), Matthew Lipman Jan 2002

(Lilya: Ukrainian Translation Of Elfie Novel), Matthew Lipman

Early Elementary School Curriculum

(Rusya: Ukrainian Translation Of Pixie Novel), Matthew Lipman Jan 2002

(Rusya: Ukrainian Translation Of Pixie Novel), Matthew Lipman

Early Elementary School Curriculum

La Repubblica Di Sandel E L'Lo Incarnato, Richard Dagger Jan 2002

La Repubblica Di Sandel E L'Lo Incarnato, Richard Dagger

Political Science Faculty Publications

When Artists Fail: A Reply To Trivedi, Sheila Lintott Jan 2002

When Artists Fail: A Reply To Trivedi, Sheila Lintott

Faculty Journal Articles

In a recent article, ‘An Epistemic Dilemma for Actual Intentionalism’, Saam Trivedi argues that the way we ought to interpret artworks is best understood using the model proposed by hypothetical intentionalism. Trivedi alleges that actual intentionalism faces a serious dilemma, the upshot of which is that actual intentionalists must choose between redundancy and indeterminacy. Largely on the basis of this dilemma, he concludes that even if actual intentionalism is descriptively accurate, it is prescriptively untenable. In this essay, I focus on this alleged dilemma and argue that, contra Trivedi, it fails to undermine the prescriptive legitimacy of moderate actual intentionalism. …

Neutrosophy, A New Branch Of Philosophy, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2002

Neutrosophy, A New Branch Of Philosophy, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this paper is presented a new branch of philosophy, called neutrosphy, which studies the origin, nature, and scope of neutralities, as well as their interactions with different ideational spectra. The Fundamental Thesis: Any idea is T% true, I% indeterminate, and F% false, - where T, I, F are standard or non-standard subsets included in ]0-, 1+[. The Fundamental Theory: Every idea tends to be neutralized, diminished, balanced by ideas (not only , as Hegel asserted) - as a state of equilibrium. Neutrosophy is the base of neutrosophic logic, a multiple value logic that generalizes the fuzzy logic, of neutrosophic …

The Cyborgian Self: Toward A Critical Social Theory Of Cyberspace, Michael Ian Borer Jan 2002

The Cyborgian Self: Toward A Critical Social Theory Of Cyberspace, Michael Ian Borer

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Contemporary social theory currently remains at a virtual standstill, quivering over the decision to radically leave the past behind or to continue within the historical narrative of the Enlightenment. Postmodern social theorists, advocating the position that we have, in fact, entered a new historical epoch, pose serious challenges to our perception of modernity and cultural identity. As an influential strategy that has infiltrated both the humanities and the social sciences for more than thirty years, postmodernism can no longer be dismissed as merely a fad or trend. In a world where the use of complex, and often mobile, …

Rorty's Complicit American Neo-Pragmatism, Haidar Eid Jan 2002

Rorty's Complicit American Neo-Pragmatism, Haidar Eid

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Despite the obvious French origin of poststructuralism, its paradigmatic resonance can be found in the American philosophical scene, an essential part of which is Richard Rorty's neo-pragmatism -- the theoretical basis of American (post)modernism. However, different from poststructuralism's apparent antagonism to the authoritarian establishments, Rorty adopts the Derridean poststructuralist motifs of the decentering of the subject, and the disappearance of meaning and truth in order to defend the establishment -- or rather, the status quo.
