The Easy Argument, Steven Luper
The Easy Argument, Steven Luper
Philosophy Faculty Research
Suppose Ted is in an ordinary house in good viewing conditions and believes red, his table is red, entirely because he sees his table and its color; he also believes not-white, it is false that his table is white and illuminated by a red light, because not-white is entailed by red. The following three claims about this table case clash, but each seems plausible: 1. Ted’s epistemic position is strong enough for him to know red. 2. Ted cannot know not-white on the basis of red. 3. The epistemic closure principle, suitably restricted, is true. …
Mortal Harm, Steven Luper
Mortal Harm, Steven Luper
Philosophy Faculty Research
The harm thesis says that death may harm the individual who dies. The posthumous harm thesis says that posthumous events may harm those who die. Epicurus rejects both theses, claiming that there is no subject who is harmed, no clear harm which is received, and no clear time when any harm is received. Feldman rescues the harm thesis with solutions to Epicurus' three puzzles based on his own version of the deprivation account of harm. But many critics, among them Lamont, Grey, Feit and Bradley, have rejected Feldman's solution to the timing puzzle, offering their own solutions in its place. …
Heloise And Abelard Today: A Student Response Approach, Carol Breslin, Donald F. Duclow
Heloise And Abelard Today: A Student Response Approach, Carol Breslin, Donald F. Duclow
Quidditas
The story of Heloise and Abelard has aged remarkably well. We teach their “Personal Letters” and Abelard’s Historia calamitatum in two undergraduate courses. This article discusses an informal writing assignment, in which our students adopt the persona of Astralabe, the son of Heloise and Abelard, and write a letter to Heloise concerning his parents’ lives and loves. Often students read the correspondence through the filter of contemporary experience. They consider Abelard’s behavior as patriarchal and boorish, and object to what they see as Heloise’s extreme humility and acceptance of the anti-feminist palaver of her day. However, when students remember and …

Caring Globally: Jane Addams, World War One, And International Hunger, Marilyn Fischer
Caring Globally: Jane Addams, World War One, And International Hunger, Marilyn Fischer
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Several feminist philosophers, including Virginia Held, Joan Tronto, and Fiona Robinson, see the need for, and the potential of, care ethics for achieving far-reaching political and even global transformation. Tronto recommends that care be used as "a basis for political change" and a "strategy for organizing" (Tronto 1993, 175). Held advocates that "the ethics of care should transform international politics and relations between states as well as within them" (Held 2006, 161).
During and immediately after World War One, Jane Addams attempted to do just that. She sought to bring perspectives and moral sensibilities that have since been theorized in …
Strokes Of Existence: The Connection Of All Things, Mari Gorman
Strokes Of Existence: The Connection Of All Things, Mari Gorman
Graduate Student Publications and Research
Acted or real—and all life is real whether one is acting or not—the common denominator and consistent, ubiquitous reality of life and all behavior is that it manifests in the form of relationships on all scales. But what is a relationship? Until now, the answer to this question has not been sufficiently known. As a result of many years of empirical research that began with the aim of discovering what is going on in a gifted actor when s/he is playing a character that can be observed and experienced as a living, intuitive being, and based on the knowledge that …
A Pragmatist Cosmopolitan Moment: Reconfiguring Nussbaum's Cosmopolitan Concentric Circles, Marilyn Fischer
A Pragmatist Cosmopolitan Moment: Reconfiguring Nussbaum's Cosmopolitan Concentric Circles, Marilyn Fischer
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Robert Fine and Robin Cohen conclude their essay “Four Cosmopolitan Moments” by stating that developing cosmopolitanism “has become an urgent moral necessity” (2002, 162). As resources for this task they offer the Stoics, Kant, Arendt, and Nussbaum as particularly important “moments” in the history of cosmopolitanism. David Held (2002, 57) shares their sense of urgency but worries that a Kantian understanding of political communities gives an inadequate basis for this task. David Hollinger identifies as “new cosmopolitans” an array of scholars who articulate alternatives to Nussbaum's universalism and Kymlicka's pluralism, in attempting “to connect the notion of a species-wide community …

Between The Bounds Of Experience And Divine Intuition: Kant’S Epistemic Limits And Hegel’S Ambitions, James Kreines
Between The Bounds Of Experience And Divine Intuition: Kant’S Epistemic Limits And Hegel’S Ambitions, James Kreines
CMC Faculty Publications and Research
Hegel seeks to overturn Kant's conclusion that our knowledge is restricted, or that we cannot have knowledge of things as they are in themselves. Understanding this Hegelian ambition requires distinguishing two Kantian characterizations of our epistemic limits: First, we can have knowledge only within the “bounds of experience”. Second, we cannot have knowledge of objects that would be accessible only to a divine intellectual intuition, even though the faculty of reason requires us to conceive of such objects. Hegel aims to drive a wedge between these two characterizations, showing that we can have knowledge beyond Kant's bounds of experience, yet …

Does The Concept Of “Altered States Of Consciousness” Rest On A Mistake?, Adam J. Rock, Stanley Krippner
Does The Concept Of “Altered States Of Consciousness” Rest On A Mistake?, Adam J. Rock, Stanley Krippner
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Block (2002) has argued that the multiplicity of meanings ascribed to consciousness is due
to the erroneous treatment of very different concepts as a single concept. Block distinguished
four notions of consciousness intended to encapsulate the various meanings attributed to
the term: phenomenal, access, self, and monitoring consciousness. We argue that what is
common to all of these definitions is the implicit distinction between consciousness and the
content of consciousness. We critically examine the term “altered state of consciousness”
and argue that affixing the qualifier “altered state” to consciousness results in a theoretical
confusion of consciousness and its content, that …
The Challenges, Prospects, And Promise Of Transpersonal Psychology, Paul F. Cunningham
The Challenges, Prospects, And Promise Of Transpersonal Psychology, Paul F. Cunningham
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Several substantial critiques remain a source of fractionalizing debate within transpersonal
psychology, including the weakness of its definition, whether it is redundant with Wilber’s
integral psychology, whether it is a scientific field, whether it is too metaphysical, whether it
neglects the problem of evil, and what contribution can it make to mainstream psychology.
This article explicates these and related areas of critique and provides a response that identifies
the essential challenges and future prospects of transpersonal psychology. The article also
emphasizes the field’s unique role as a potential bridge connecting psychological science with
the transpersonal psyche in a way that …

Mindfulness In Measurement: Reconsidering The Measurable In Mindfulness Practice, Sharon G. Solloway, William P. Fisher Jr.
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Can an organic partnership of qualitative and quantitative data confirm the value of mindfulness practice as an assignment in undergraduate education? Working from qualitative evidence suggesting the existence of potentially measurable mindfulness effects expressed in ruler measures, a previous study calibrated a mathematically invariant scale of mindfulness practice effects with substantively and statistically significant differences in the measures before and after the assignment. Current efforts replicated these results. The quantitative model is described in measurement terms defined at an introductory level. Detailed figures and appendices are provided, and a program of future research is proposed.
A Third Model Of Self-Construal: The Metapersonal Self, Teresa L. Decicco, Mirella L. Stroink
A Third Model Of Self-Construal: The Metapersonal Self, Teresa L. Decicco, Mirella L. Stroink
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
This research adds a third model and measure of self-construal to the current psychological literature: the metapersonal self-construal. This model extends previous theory and research, which has established two self-construal orientations to date: the independent and interdependent self-construal. The research presents a series of studies investigating the theoretical and psychometric properties of the third model and measure. Study 1 produced a valid and reliable 10-item self-report scale of the metapersonal self. Study 2 determined the scale to be low in social desirability bias. Studies 3 and 4 examined the convergent and discriminant validity of the three self-construal scales. Investigations among …

Reports Of Transpersonal Experiences By Non-Native Practitioners Of The Native American Sweat Lodge Ceremony: A Critical Appraisal, Whit Hibbard
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Interviews with 30 experienced non-native practitioners of the Native American sweat lodge
ceremony revealed 184 reports of transpersonal experiences. Interview questions sought to (a)
disclose how practitioners discern or critique their own experiences, (b) consider alternative
explanations for practitioners’ experiences, and (c) critically reflect on the sweat lodge
ceremony per se as a spiritual practice. It was found that practitioners generally (a) interpreted
their experiences as trustworthy interactions with a spiritual reality, (b) did not seriously
consider alternative explanations for their experiences, and (c) neglected to reflect critically
on the sweat lodge ceremony per se as a spiritual practice.

Moral Philosophy And Moral Cultivation, William J. Prior
Moral Philosophy And Moral Cultivation, William J. Prior
Philosophy
Moral cultivation is a practice, any practice, by which one attempts to direct the course of moral development either of oneself or others. The aim of this practice is the attainment of moral wisdom, or the closest approximation to that ideal that human beings can attain. In the ancient Greek tradition of philosophy, as well as in the Chinese tradition, the name often given to one who has attained moral wisdom is "the sage." Writers in the ancient Greek tradition, with which I shall be concerned here, attempt to show that the life of the sage is one that we …
Trading Quality For Quantity, Christopher Morgan-Knapp
Trading Quality For Quantity, Christopher Morgan-Knapp
Philosophy Faculty Scholarship
This paper deals with problems that vagueness raises for choices involving evaluative tradeoffs. I focus on a species of such choices, which I call ‘qualitative barrier cases.’ These are cases in which a qualitatively significant tradeoff in one evaluative dimension for a given improvement in another dimension could not make an option better all things considered, but a merely quantitative tradeoff for the given improvement might. Trouble arises, however, when one of the options constitutes a borderline case of an evaluative kind. I argue that in such cases we can neither affirm nor deny that trading off losses in one …

Ketamine-Enhanced Psychotherapy: Preliminary Clinical Observations On Its Effects In Treating Death Anxiety, Eli Kolp, Scott M. Young, Harris Freidman, Evgeny Krupirsky, Karl Jansen, Laurie-Ann O’Connor
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Ketamine, a dissociative anesthetic commonly used by US physicians, has recently been
shown to be a powerful anti-depressant and is also capable of eliciting transpersonal experiences
that can be transformative. Although currently approved in the US only for use as an
anesthetic, physicians there can legally prescribe it off-label to treat various psychological/
psychiatric problems and it has been used for these non-anesthetic purposes in Argentina,
Iran, Mexico, Russia, and the UK, as well as in the US. The literature on using ketamine
psychotherapeutically is reviewed and two case studies using ketamine-enhanced psychotherapy
(KEP) for treating death anxiety in terminally-ill …
Moral Status, Moral Value, And Human Embryos: Implications For Stem Cell Research, Bonnie Steinbock
Moral Status, Moral Value, And Human Embryos: Implications For Stem Cell Research, Bonnie Steinbock
Philosophy Faculty Scholarship
Human embryonic stem cells (ES cells) are of scientific and medical interest because of their ability to develop into different tissue types and because of their ability to be propagated for many generations in laboratory culture. Grown in a laboratory, they might one day be used in the treatment of degenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. They could provide bone cells for the treatment of osteoporosis, eye cells for macular degeneration, blood cells for cancer, insulinproducing cells for diabetes, heart muscle cells for heart disease, nerve cells for spinal cord injury. The potential for benefit to so many people …
Mcmahon On Workplace Democracy, Jeffrey Moriarty
Mcmahon On Workplace Democracy, Jeffrey Moriarty
Philosophy Faculty Publications
This paper offers a sympathetic critique of Christopher McMahon’s Authority and Democracy: A General Theory of Government and Management. Although I find fault with some of his arguments, my goal is not to show that these arguments are irreparable, but to highlight issues that deserve further consideration. After defining some terms, first, I raise an objection to McMahon’s rejection of the moral unity of management (MUM) thesis. Second, I draw attention to his “moralization” of the workplace, and examine the role it plays in his arguments about the relative strengths of the different kinds of authority. Third, I raise …
