Maria Fairfax And The “Easy Philosopher”: Action And Indolence In Andrew Marvell’S “Upon Appleton House”, Byron Nelson
Maria Fairfax And The “Easy Philosopher”: Action And Indolence In Andrew Marvell’S “Upon Appleton House”, Byron Nelson
Quidditas
Andrew Marvell dramatizes the difficult choice between action and indolence in his long pastoral poem, “Upon Appleton House.” The nameless nun’s rhetorical temptation of Isabel Thwaites, as narrated in an apparent digression from the past history of the house, anticipates the poet’s own self-seduction in the woods later in the poem. Both Isabel and the poet need to be rescued from their fallen state. The tension between action and passivity is resolved by the redemptive appearance of “Maria.” The model for her providential intervention is the Shakespearean romance, in which an innocent daughter, who is rescued from danger and degradation, …
Alphabetical Lives: Early Modern German Biographical Lexicons And Encyclopedias, Richard G. Cole
Alphabetical Lives: Early Modern German Biographical Lexicons And Encyclopedias, Richard G. Cole
Quidditas
Those who appear obvious to us as “major players” in past eras may in part result from an unintended consequence of the work of early modern biographical lexicographers. By the eighteenth century, there were enough printed sources and available archival materials to deluge or even overwhelm historians and biographers with information about past actors of sixteenth century history. Those biographical lexicographers made choices about whom to give prominence and whom to minimize or ignore in their works.

Review Essay: Bringing The Middle Ages Into The World History Survey Course: Some Suggestions, Tiffany A. Trimmer
Quidditas
Too often World Historians neglect coverage of the European Middle Ages, and medieval history courses tend to lose sight of the ways in which medieval Europe played a part in the wider world to which it belonged. Part of this results from the artificial pre/post 1500 CE split that dominates the organization of the typical world history survey, and part from the reluctance of World Historians to realize the potential of a global history approach to the era before the age of exploration and colonization. The works included in this essay attempt to rectify the absence of earlier European historical …

Books Recommended For Courses: Denis De Rougement. Love In The Western World, J. M. Anderson
Quidditas
Denis de Rougemont’s Love in the Western World has become something of a classic since it first appeared in 1939. Rougemont traces the development of romantic love from its origins in the twelfth century to its mutated condition in the twentieth. His thesis is that romantic love and marriage are fundamentally opposed. “My central purpose,” he wrote in his Preface to the 1956 revised edition, “was to describe the inescapable conflict in the West between passion and marriage; and in my view that remains the true subject, the real contention of the book as it has worked out.” Whereas romantic …
Books Recommended For Courses: Elena Levy-Navarro. The Culture Of Obesity In Early And Late Modernity: Body Image In Shakespeare, Jonson, Middleton, And Skelton, Holly Overturf
Quidditas
If next semester’s reading list is feeling a bit thin, consider fattening it up with The Culture of Obesity in Early and Late Modernity: Body Image in Shakespeare, Jonson, Middleton, and Skelton, an important new book by Elena Levy-Navarro. The book consists of six chapters, followed by extensive endnotes and a useful index. The first two chapters introduce the next four, and seek to build a history from which a fat culture can be formed. In the last four chapters, Levy- Navarro flexes her (fat-blanketed) literary anthropologist muscles by looking for symbolic meanings of fat in selected works of …

A Phenomenological Interpretation Of Religion Via Pre-Socratic Thinking, Angus Brook
A Phenomenological Interpretation Of Religion Via Pre-Socratic Thinking, Angus Brook
Philosophy Papers and Journal Articles
What is religion? What does the concept of religion mean? Today, the word ‘religion’ appears everywhere; a seemingly all pervasive notion associated with a vast array of phenomena, including: war, terrorism, politics, science fiction, morality, and of course, with delusion and irrationality. However, what religion is, or what it means, remains a highly contested matter. It will be the aim of this paper to offer an interpretation of the meaning of the concept of religion by using just one of many philosophical ways of approaching religion, namely; phenomenology as ontology.
The paper will focus upon the remaining fragments of three …

The Appropriation Of St Cuthbert: Architecture, History-Writing, And Ecclesiastical Politics In Durham, 1083-1250, John D. Young
Quidditas
This paper describes the use of the cult of Saint Cuthbert in the High Middle Ages by both the bishops of Durham and the Benedictine community that was tied to the Episcopal see. Its central contention is that the churchmen of Durham adapted this popular cult to the political expediencies of the time. In the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries, when Bishop William de St. Calais ousted the entrenched remnants of the Lindisfarne community and replaced them with Benedictines, Cuthbert was primarily a monastic saint and not, as he would become, a popular pilgrimage saint. However, once the Benedictine …

Combatant’S Privilege Reconsidered, Harry Van Der Linden
Combatant’S Privilege Reconsidered, Harry Van Der Linden
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
International law grants to legitimate combatants the right to kill enemy soldiers both in wars of aggression and defensive wars. A main argument in support of this “combatant’s privilege” is Michael Walzer’s doctrine of the “moral equality of soldiers.” The doctrine argues that soldiers fighting in wars of aggression and defensive wars have the same moral status because they both typically believe that justice is on their side, and their moral choices are equally severely restricted by the overwhelming coercive powers of the state, including propaganda, conscription, and harsh penalties for the refusal to fight. Recently, this doctrine has been …

Adam Smith And The Stages Of Moral Development, Daniel R. Denicola
Philosophy Faculty Publications
The writer explores Adam Smith's Theory of Moral Sentiments, where Smith presents a rich and provocative account of morality. The writer offers an explication of Smith's moral psychology as a stage theory of moral development, with the intention of generating critical points on both mattes of detail and larger implications.

Real Philosophy, Good Teaching, And Academic Freedom, Lou Matz
College of the Pacific Faculty Articles
In its “Statements on the Profession: The Teaching of Philosophy,” the APA exhorts philosophers, philosophy departments, and their institutions to be committed to providing “educational experiences of high quality.”1 To this end, the APA Newsletter on Teaching Philosophy shares pedagogical best practices, giving faculty and departments new ideas and approaches to teaching philosophy more effectively and to improving philosophy curricula. In certain circumstances, it is not enough, however, to use effective teaching methods; one must persuade one’s colleagues and institution that one is, in fact, delivering a quality educational experience. Since teaching skill is determined by others—especially by one’s colleagues …

On Their Own?: Mexican Immigrants' Assistance By Government, Ngos, And Self-Help At Times Of Natural Disaster In Wimauma, Florida, Nancy Raylene Scott
Philosophy & Humanities Theses - Archive
During the 2004 hurricane season, four successive storms struck Central Florida causing catastrophic damage to crops and displacing close to 195,000 migrant and seasonal workers. Based on ethnographic fieldwork, this thesis examines how government agencies and NGOs respond to such natural disasters by reaching out to Latino immigrant workers and families in Wimauma, Florida, and the diverse ways in which the immigrant community itself organized to confront the needs and problems brought about by these disasters. I pay particular attention to the role of Mexican immigrants’ kinship and social networks in developing adaptive strategies during times of stress and to …

Some Rudimentary Problems Pertaining To The Construction Of An Ontology And Epistemology Of Shamanic Journeying Imagery, Adam J. Rock, Stanley Krippner
Some Rudimentary Problems Pertaining To The Construction Of An Ontology And Epistemology Of Shamanic Journeying Imagery, Adam J. Rock, Stanley Krippner
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Attempts to elucidate the kinds of “thing” or “things” to which the term shamanic journeying
image is referentially linked must grapple with two related questions: what is the fundamental
nature of shamanic journeying images, and how might the origin of a shamanic
journeying image be found? The first question is ontological, concerned with the nature
and essence of shamanic journeying images. In contrast, the second is epistemological and
methodolgical, concerned with how to acquire knowledge of shamanic journeying images.
We demonstrate how inductive and deductive reasoning, the private language argument,
and reification render problematic the resolution of both. Finally, we …
Integral Approach To Mental Suffering, Laura B. Gilot
Integral Approach To Mental Suffering, Laura B. Gilot
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Th is article further develops one section by the same name in another article published in
the International Journal of Transpersonal Studies entitled Integral Approach in Transpersonal
Psychotherapy (Boggio Gilot, 2003) by proposing a model of mental suff ering based on
uniting scientifi c psychology with meditative wisdom (e.g., derived from Yoga Vedanta). Th e
role of spiritual vision underlines a wider understanding of the origins of mental suff ering,
including damage from ontological unawareness and egoism, non-ethical factors usually
ignored in psychology. Th ese give rise to destructive poisons of the mind such as pride,
greed, fear, resentment, envy, …

(2008) The Higher Power Of Lucky (2006) By Susan Patron, Peter Shea
Collected Papers of Peter Shea
Ten-year-old Lucky lost her mother in a freak accident; her father is missing, and she is being cared for by her father’s former girlfriend in a tiny town at the edge of the Mojave desert. That could be the set-up for a story of loss and poverty. But this girl lives up to her name: she takes scraps of information, chance experiences, and overheard theories as resources for imagining the world and plotting her way forward. She learns how things work from the desert animals and insects, with the help of her hero, Charles Darwin. She learns survival and a …
