World Voice: Invisible Lines & Mindfulness And Peaceful Living, Joseph A. Santiago May 2008

World Voice: Invisible Lines & Mindfulness And Peaceful Living, Joseph A. Santiago

Senior Honors Projects

All my life I have always wanted to make a difference in people’s lives. As I come to the last stretch of my bachelor’s degree I can look back on all the moments in school and in the workplace where my path was elusive and I longed for expression. In creating these two books I have shaped a platform where people across the globe can come together and share their voice. There are times when we all feel that no one is listening to us, and no one understands us. Over the last few months I have talked with people …

The Geometry Of Intuitions: Reconsidering Kantian Constructivism, Michael Mcnulty May 2008

The Geometry Of Intuitions: Reconsidering Kantian Constructivism, Michael Mcnulty

Philosophy Honors Projects

The role of visual methods in geometry is puzzling. Though diagrams can make a geometric theorem immediately evident, current rules of proper inference suggest that diagrams are mere heuristics-simply aiding in the psychological digestibility of a proof. Securing a justificatory role for visual methods involves describing how inference from a diagram guarantees the universality and the a:priority of a geometric theorem. Such an analysis is provided in Kant's synthetic a priori account of geometry. In this paper, Kant's theory is explicated and subsequently defended from attacks related to modern advances in predicate logic, relativistic physics, non-Euclidean geometry and formalism.

Against Unrestricted Human Enhancement, Patrick Lin, Fritz Allhoff May 2008

Against Unrestricted Human Enhancement, Patrick Lin, Fritz Allhoff

Philosophy

The defining debate in this new century will be about technology and human enhancement, according to many across the political spectrum. Our ability to use science to enhance our bodies and minds – as opposed to its application for therapeutic purposes – is one of the most personal and therefore passionate issues in an era where emerging technologies seduce us with new and fantastic possibilities for our future. But in the process, we are forced to rethink what it means to be human or, essentially, our own identity. For some, technology holds the promise of making us superhuman; for others, …

Reid's Defense Of Common Sense, P.D. Magnus May 2008

Reid's Defense Of Common Sense, P.D. Magnus

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

Thomas Reid is often misread as defending common sense, if at all, only by relying on illicit premises about God or our natural faculties. On these theological or reliabilist misreadings, Reid makes common sense assertions where he cannot give arguments. This paper attempts to untangle Reid's defense of common sense by distinguishing four arguments: (a) the argument from madness, (b) the argument from natural faculties, (c) the argument from impotence, and (d) the argument from practical commitment. Of these, (a) and (c) do rely on problematic premises that are no more secure than claims of common sense itself. Yet (b) …

Contextualism And The Factivity Problem, Peter Baumann May 2008

Contextualism And The Factivity Problem, Peter Baumann

Philosophy Faculty Works

Epistemological contextualism - the claim that the truth-value of knowledge-attributions can vary with the context of the attributor - has recently faced a whole series of objections. The most serious one, however, has not been discussed much so far: the factivity objection. In this paper, I explain what the objection is and present three different versions of the objection. I then show that there is a good way out for the contextualist. However, in order to solve the problem the contextualist has to accept a relationalist version of contextualism.

Sexual Mores, Ethical Theories, And The Overpopulation Myth, Howard P. Kainz May 2008

Sexual Mores, Ethical Theories, And The Overpopulation Myth, Howard P. Kainz

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

Some of the causes of the 'sexual revolution' during the past few decades are widely known: The development of relatively safe and reliable contraceptives, especially the birth-control pill; the 'morning after' pill; antibiotics to relieve or cure sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea, herpes, and syphilis; the increased social acceptance of pre-marital sex, homosexuality, and other behaviors that formerly were considered deviant; and the legalization of abortion as the ultimate 'contraceptive'. But little attention has been paid to two rather cerebral factors relevant to these developments – namely, ethical theories, and theories of overpopulation. In this paper I will argue …

Charlotte Perkins Gilman And Educational Philosophy: Social Progress And Contemporary Efficacy, Teresa Lynn Wise May 2008

Charlotte Perkins Gilman And Educational Philosophy: Social Progress And Contemporary Efficacy, Teresa Lynn Wise

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As one of the prominent and influential philosophers of her time, Charlotte Perkins Gilman was well known for her 1898 study, Women and Economics: A Study of the Economic Relation between Men and Women as a Factor in Social Evolution. This study demonstrated the negative perceptions maintained toward women from within an androcentric culture. Gilman's treatise developed into a life long argument for the equal treatment and considered value of one-half of the human population: women. It is through the educational facet of her social philosophy illustrated in the novel, Her land, that Gilman demonstrates a culture composed of caring …

Belief And Persuasion In The Socratic Elenchus, Dylan Futter Apr 2008

Belief And Persuasion In The Socratic Elenchus, Dylan Futter

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Perhaps the most remarkable feature of Socrates’ philosophical method is how unsuccessful it is. One problem is that elenchus seems able only to destroy common belief without generating anything substantive in its place. Another is that it seems incapable of getting anyone to relinquish his unsupported beliefs. Plato is acutely aware of these problems. In the Meno, he undertakes to show that Socrates’ method of inquiry is capable of generating substantive results. In the Gorgias, he reveals why some people are not moved by reasoned argument. And in the Republic he proposes a complex model of moral belief-formation, …
