Reeves explains that he advertised the wagons for sale in April but withheld wagons No. 4 and No. 6 in case they were needed for public service. Before the sale, Mr. Dempsey arrived with Sibley’s order for one of the wagons; Reeves allowed him to choose one, pending Captain Brannin’s arrival with further letters from Sibley.

Mexican Road Commission (1825-1827)

On April 25, 1826, the St. Louis firm Tracy & Wahrendorff wrote to B.H. Reeves of Fayette regarding the financial accounts of the U.S. Commissioners appointed to lay out the road to New Mexico. The letter enclosed an account statement showing a deficit of $91.55 as of the previous December. Despite the lack of funds, the firm confirmed they would honor specific drafts in favor of Mary E. Sibley ($200) and Paul Baillio ($128), while requesting that Reeves replenish the funds upon the return of his colleague, Thomas Mather.

On April 15, 1826, B.H. Reeves of Fayette, Missouri, wrote to the firm Tracy & Wahrendorff regarding funds held for the Commissioners of the Mexican Road. Reeves directs the recipients to honor a $200 draft drawn by George C. Sibley in favor of Mrs. Mary E. Sibley. Additionally, Reeves requests a status update on the account balance to determine if further funds are required and to prepare for a final settlement with the government. In a postscript, Reeves authorizes a second payment of $128 to Paul Baillio, also drawn by George C. Sibley against the public fund.
