Concept Map Used In Reading English As A Foreign Language At The University Level, Li Han
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examined traditional reading instruction and concept mapping reading instruction using reading and survey data collected from English as Foreign Language (EFL) students in China. Its purpose was to investigate whether there was any difference between these instructional types in three reading areas: main idea reading, subordinate idea reading and reading between the lines. Forty first-year students were randomly chosen from two universities in Southwestern China. They were equally divided into the two instructional methods. Keeping in mind the Chinese character-combination yuyan, with its multiple meanings of language, parts of language, the processes of language, and the products of those processes, the author depicts English as kept alive by many people and by many different ways of using it in a wide range of personal, social, and historical contexts. She proposes four lines of inquiry “against the grain” of English-only instruction—that living-English users weigh what English can do for them against what it has done to them; that they weigh what English can do against what it cannot do; that they understand English as being …

This report is submitted June 16, 2006 to the Purdue University Writing Lab, specifically to Linda Bergmann, Director; Tammy Conard-Salvo, Associate Director; and Karl Stolley, Lead Web Designer. Intended to inform the ongoing redesign of the Online Writing Lab (OWL), it is written to maintain the highest level of usability and user-centered design of a unique, globally-utilized information resource. Commencement Addresses
Bob Wright ’65, chairman and chief executive officer of NBC Universal and vice chairman and executive officer of the General Electric Company, delivered the principal address and received an honorary degree on May 26, during the 160th commencement ceremony of the College of the Holy Cross.
Wright has had one of the longest and most successful tenures of any media company chief executive. Under his leadership, NBC was transformed from a broadcast network into a global media powerhouse, with leadership in broadcast network television, cable programming, station ownership and television production. In the Nineteenth Century graduate theological education became the dominant form of training for the ministry in Protestant churches. In North America, one of the first institutions founded to provide graduate training for the ministry was the Theological Seminary of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America at Princeton. This thesis examines the life and work of Samuel Miller (1769-1850), one of the key proponents for the foundation of, what is now, Princeton Theological Seminary and one of its first professors.
