During this session, four female presenters from diverse academic and service backgrounds spoke about the global pandemic of the past two years as a catalyst to raise awareness on global concerns about human rights, education, environment, immigration, and racism. Panelists were Dr. Corinne Brion, a professor in the department of Education; Dr. Satang Nabaneh, Director of Programs at the University of Dayton Human Rights Center; Dr. Joann Wright Mawasha, deputy director at the city of Dayton Human Rights Council; and Dr. Maria Vivero, a professor in the department of Economics and Finance. Academic Labor: Research and Artistry (2017-2022 archives)

Faculty teaching during COVID-19 have been asked to adapt to a wide range of instructional modalities that have often increased the labor they experience without commensurate compensation. Hybrid courses, which were already popular pre-pandemic, have become even more common as schools and universities have rushed to adapt instruction to students’ needs. This article reports on interviews with faculty teaching hybrid courses to investigate their perceptions of the labor involved in teaching in this instructional modality, drawing connections to the labor many faculty are experiencing as they adapt to hybrid or other, similar instructional modalities. The 2022 Global Voices Symposium occurred at a momentous time. In addition to the ongoing global pandemic, Russia had unleashed a brutal invasion of Ukraine. The presentations focused on students’ perspectives of study abroad, human rights, the role of women, COVID 19, new directions in study abroad, immigrant life, and the increasing importance of Africa. Each speaker brought a unique perspective to the conversation. Repeatedly, speakers spoke about the positive impact of global awareness in their personal and professional development. In 2006 Henry Jenkins commented how the media landscape will be reshaped by a bottom-up energy of media created by amateurs (Jenkins, 2006). This prediction can be seen when comparing traditional screen productions with the user-created content on platforms such as TikTok. Social media continues to prove Jenkins’s foresight, stating in 2012 how stories are shaped by teenagers “… wanting the media they want, where they want, how they want it, in the form they want it when they want it,” (Jenkins, 2012). Clash And Cooperation Of Ecofeminism And Postmodern Feminism: The Intersection Of Two Theories In Dystopic Literature, Ashton Koch

Ecofeminism and postmodern feminism are regarded as opposite theories in their attempts to solve for ecological and patriarchal oppression. This thesis argues that these two theories are not mutually exclusive, and must work together to effectively combat oppression faced by the environment and by women. It uses two works of literature, Our Life in the Forest by Marie Darrieussecq and Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood to argue for the combination of ecofeminist and postmodern feminist strategies. Both works are dystopic in nature, portraying the destruction of the environment and patriarchal discourse against women. Ultimately, this thesis analyzes the strategies …

The Red Power Movement from 1969-1975 inspired both Indigenous and non- Indigenous students and faculty from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) to work for the betterment of Indigenous peoples in areas of affirmation, education, leadership, and language preservation and revitalization. For a time, student efforts by the Council of American Indian Students, faculty sponsored Indigenous education-centered programs, educational outreach through television, and Lakota language courses helped carve out an Indigenous space on campus where Indigenous students could thrive and seek empowerment through education. This era of Red Power-inspired projects, programs, and efforts at UNL peaked from 1969 to the early …

Nature and Chasing Redbird provide poignant examples of the restorative power found in the natural world, and a thorough analysis of the works and lives of the authors reveal past trauma created the need for this restoration. Traumatic experiences shape an individual’s thought processes, as each decision the individual makes is based upon fearing an uncertain outcome. Throughout Nature, Emerson references a child’s innocence, demonstrating that a child’s perspective has not yet been tainted by experience. We encounter loss in countless ways throughout our lives, and yet we also look toward a future where all is restored. This collection is an exploration of the losses I have experienced, presented in both fictional and nonfictional forms. My hope is to show the life that pervades even in loss, both through our attachment to the physical world and in the way our grief points toward our desire for permanence, …

Sanctuary is a collection of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry that explores relationships. I pull from my own experiences with family, friendships, self-knowledge, and the divine to connect with readers over shared loss and over attempts at understanding goodness, beauty, and truth. Sanctuary seeks to look at relationships multilaterally, holding pain and pleasure in juxtaposition. Everyone needs people who make them feel safe, wanted, and known, and sanctuary is not found in the same places for everyone.
