This conference paper (in French) explores the construction of interlocution in the monologues of Brian Friel's theatre. It proposes a novel means of analysis of the monologue by mobilising key developments in French pragmatic linguistic analysis of I and You and interlocution.

This thesis examines the question of determination of transitivity for a verb through a comparison of processes involved in English and in French. It takes in several theories belonging to the area of the syntax-semantics interface in order to understand how a predicate is construed as either intransitive or direct transitive or indirect transitive in either language.The study focuses on a corpus of verbs that present different argument structures in French and in English. At the present time in France, organized religion has largely lost its popular appeal. A centuries-old tradition of secularism has replaced God in the hearts of many. It is not therefore surprising that the 'Catholic novel' in its best-known form that of the thirties, when Bernanos and Mauriac wrote their greatest novels is no longer being written by contemporary novelists. That sort of novel simply does not reflect the current spiritual crisis in French society.
