This collection of essays and stories strives to consider questions of belonging and estrangement, family, and the many layers of the human experience. Whitewashing Blackface Minstrelsy In Nineteenth-Century England: Female Banjo Players In 'Punch', Laura Vorachek Apr 2013

Whitewashing Blackface Minstrelsy In Nineteenth-Century England: Female Banjo Players In 'Punch', Laura Vorachek

English Faculty Publications

Blackface minstrelsy, popular in England since its introduction in 1836, reached its apogee in 1882 when the Prince of Wales took banjo lessons from James Bohee, an African-American performer. The result, according to musicologist Derek Scott, was a craze for the banjo among men of the middle classes. However, a close look at the periodical press, and the highly influential Punch in particular, indicates that the fad extended to women as well. While blackface minstrelsy was considered a wholesome entertainment in Victorian England, Punch's depiction of female banjo players highlights English unease with this practice in a way that male …

Almost Touching, Almost Free, Dustin M. Hoffman Apr 2013

Almost Touching, Almost Free, Dustin M. Hoffman

Dissertations

This collection of stories delves into themes of the working class. These stories of working-class characters range from realism to fabulism to experimental, because the story of working-class people is complex and always shifting. Some of the stories travel backward in time to shepherds and traveling crusaders, while others take on much more contemporary voices, speaking from the point of view of sex workers, carpenters, office workers, ice cream van drivers, and salesmen. If these stories have one thing in common, it is that the characters are searching for identity, for a concrete sense of self that seems to have …

And a young girl learns about sex amidst a minefield of guilt and abuse. By The Limuru Road, Ann Barry Burrows Apr 2013

By The Limuru Road, Ann Barry Burrows

English Theses & Dissertations

The road to Limuru, Kenya runs beside a mission hospital named Nazareth; this much is true. In these fictional accounts, if the walls — even when topped by glass shards — can be breached by violence, if troubles come inside the gigantic gate, the characters nonetheless discover that compassion, too, can invade. As they care for the sick, they pay the personal costs of belonging to this high, green, misty ridge in Africa during the AIDS epidemic and the ascendancy of modern ways.
