Red Star Studded Chaos: Sex Scandal, Juan Salas Jan 2014

Red Star Studded Chaos: Sex Scandal, Juan Salas

Masters Theses

Leon de Cruz is a fame hungry journalist that published sex pictures of the greatest pop group in the world: Red Star Studded Chaos. The group was genetically engineered to be physically perfect and live a minimum of 10,000 years without aging. Leon's news article about the group catapults him into international superstardom, and RSSC's only rival, a recently founded Christian pop group called Properness, wants to manipulate Leon into using his new found fame to write a novel that condemns the very debauchery RSSC stands for.

Looking to capitalize on the chaos sparked by the sex photographs, Properness's management …

The Judgments, D G. Basham Jan 2014

The Judgments, D G. Basham

Liberal Studies (MA) Final Essays

A collection of eight short stories titled The Judgments. The first seven stories take characters that have a clear weakness with regards to one of the seven deadly sins of gluttony, lust, greed, wrath, sloth, envy, or pride and play out the story of the choices they make based on who they believe they are and who they believe everyone else is in comparison. It becomes evident throughout the stories that one deadly sin will branch out into one or more of the others. The eighth and final story is one of redemption in which one man finally sees a …

The Circuit: An Original Television Series, Grace T. Ding Jan 2014

The Circuit: An Original Television Series, Grace T. Ding

CMC Senior Theses

Between good and evil there's a whole lot of gray: Welcome to The Circuit.

A shady private security firm recruits criminals straight out of prison and sells its services to the highest bidder, saint and sinner alike (mostly sinners). Through the trials and tribulations of a diverse ensemble cast, the show explores some of my absolute favorite themes in storytelling: gray morality, found families, and unlikely heroes. Follow our gritty and guarded lead Shaye as she struggles to tame a group of talented and contentious ex-cons under the shadow of her ambitious and manipulative father, all the while struggling to …

Getting Away: Three Chapters Of A Novel Draft, Martin M. Chaffee

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This thesis consists of three chapters of a novel in progress. Getting Out is the story of Joel and Sarah Bauer, a couple in their mid-twenties who teach at an international school in Maracaibo, Venezuela. They are struggling to break the news to Sarah’s conservative Christian parents, Bill and Cindy, that they are planning to make a career as international teachers instead of returning home as previously planned. Anticipating that Bill and Cindy will receive the news poorly, Joel and Sarah have decided to fly her parents to Maracaibo to break the news. But on the morning of her parents' …

Suspense, Structure, And Point Of View: Building Surprise In Fiction, Lydia R. Klismith Jan 2014

Suspense, Structure, And Point Of View: Building Surprise In Fiction, Lydia R. Klismith

Departmental Honors Projects

Suspense, Structure, and Point of View: Building Surprise in Fiction is focused on what elements authors can use to create surprise. Surprise relies primarily on suspense in order to function. Broadly, structure and point of view are the two categories of tools an author will rely on to create suspense and build surprise. Examining various texts, this paper outlines many possible routs an author can take to support the surprise of his or her text. In my creative component I rely on the alternating point of view chapters in order to create suspense and eventually surprise. Malachi and Eve observe …

What Experience Can’T Tell: How To Show Reality In Young Adult Fiction, A Female Warrior’S Story, Jessica A. Walker Jan 2014

What Experience Can’T Tell: How To Show Reality In Young Adult Fiction, A Female Warrior’S Story, Jessica A. Walker

Departmental Honors Projects

Young adult literature is a medium that catapults our youth into fictional realms, gives them courage, and prepares them for realities of our world. As a female warrior, having served as a soldier in Afghanistan, I learned firsthand what a female warrior must be. While there are many YA novels written with women warriors as main characters, there’s a significant lack of female warrior representation that resembles our modern day military and the trials female warriors face in a primarily male-dominated field.

I have examined four authors who have tackled the issue of strong female warriors. While each author depicts …
