How Cultural Orientation And Self-Compassion Shape Objectified Body Consciousness For Women From America, Belgium, Russia, And Thailand, Robin Wollast, Abigail R. Riemer, Sarah Gervais, Lusine Grigoryan, Philippe Bernard, Olivier Klein Jan 2020

How Cultural Orientation And Self-Compassion Shape Objectified Body Consciousness For Women From America, Belgium, Russia, And Thailand, Robin Wollast, Abigail R. Riemer, Sarah Gervais, Lusine Grigoryan, Philippe Bernard, Olivier Klein

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

According to objectification theory, being treated as an object leads women to engage in self-objectification, which in turn increases body surveillance and body shame, impairing women’s mental health. While most studies focusing on self-objectification rely heavily on Western populations that emphasize individualism, the current work investigates the phenomenon of body surveillance and body shame in a cross-cultural framework, involving a comparison between American, Belgian, Russian, and Thai women (N = 605). This study aims to highlight two predictors – cultural orientation and self-compassion. Results indicate that greater endorsement of vertical individualism is related to body surveillance for American, Belgian, …

Female Cartographers: Historical Obstacles And Successes, Eva Llamas-Owens Jan 2020

Female Cartographers: Historical Obstacles And Successes, Eva Llamas-Owens

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

For much of history, women have lived in male-dominated societies, which has limited their participation in society. The field of cartography has been largely populated by men, but despite cultural obstacles, there are records of women significantly contributing over the past 1,000 years. Historically, women have faced coverture, stereotypes, lack of opportunities, and lack of recognition for their accomplishments. Their involvement in cartography is often a result of education or valuable experiences, availability of resources, a supportive community or mentor, hard work, and luck regardless of when and where they lived.

This research divides women before and after the turn …

Social Work, Social Justice, And The Causes To Which We Are Called: Attitudes, Ally Behavior, And Activism, Brittanie Atteberry Ash Jan 2020

Social Work, Social Justice, And The Causes To Which We Are Called: Attitudes, Ally Behavior, And Activism, Brittanie Atteberry Ash

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As a profession, social work has codified within its ethical guidance and educational policies a commitment to social justice. While social justice is enumerated in several guiding documents, social work continues to lack consensus on both the meaning and merit of social justice (Abramovitz, 1993; Funge, 2011; Hong & Hodge, 2009; Specht & Courtney, 1995; Van Soest & Garcia, 2003). Due to the lack of agreement within the profession about the centrality and meaning of social justice, many educational practices, attitudes, and actions of those working within the profession may not align with socially just ideals that are codified in …

Unlearning Disney: Developing A Feminist Identity While Critiquing Disney Channel Original Movies, Maura Leaden Jan 2020

Unlearning Disney: Developing A Feminist Identity While Critiquing Disney Channel Original Movies, Maura Leaden

Honors Program Theses

In this paper, I apply feminist and critical theories through the use of autoethnography and textual analysis to explore how my past consumption of Disney Channel Original Movies (DCOM) has worked to influence my gender identity, reinforce my white, middle-class, and heterosexual privilege, and undermine my agency as a woman. I situate myself as a feminist critical media scholar who is eager to understand my gender identity and move forward with more agency towards my gender expression and consciousness in my media consumption. I am building on the work of other Disney researchers and critical cultural scholars to argue that …

When Microcredit Doesn’T Empower Poor Women: Recognition Theory’S Contribution To The Debate Over Adaptive Preferences, David Ingram Jan 2020

When Microcredit Doesn’T Empower Poor Women: Recognition Theory’S Contribution To The Debate Over Adaptive Preferences, David Ingram

Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This essay proposes recognition theory as a preferred approach to explaining poor women’s puzzling preference for patriarchal subordination even after they have accessed an ostensibly empowering asset: microfinance. Neither the standard account of adaptive preference offered by Martha Nussbaum nor the competing account of constrained rational choice offered by Harriet Baber satisfactorily explains an important variation of what Serene Khader, in discussing microfinance, dubs the self-subordination social recognition paradox. The variation in question involves women who, refusing to reject the combined socio-economic benefits of patriarchal recognition and empowering microfinance, dissemble their subordination to men. In this situation, women experience …

El Manso Y El Guapo De Cara: Masculinidades Alternativas Y Marginalizadas Y Sexualidades Masculinas En La Buena Estrella, De Ricardo Franco, Iker Gonzalez-Allende Jan 2020

El Manso Y El Guapo De Cara: Masculinidades Alternativas Y Marginalizadas Y Sexualidades Masculinas En La Buena Estrella, De Ricardo Franco, Iker Gonzalez-Allende

Visionary Politics And Methods In Feminist Disability Studies, Jess Waggoner, Ashley Mog Jan 2020

Visionary Politics And Methods In Feminist Disability Studies, Jess Waggoner, Ashley Mog

Journal of Feminist Scholarship

In this introduction we explore the genealogies and methodologies of feminist disability studies (FDS). A feminist methodology is politically situated with a focus on the material conditions and social and cultural structures that marginalized people bear, experience, and resist. Methods, and the theories that underpin and create those methodological tools, can open or foreclose possibilities for praxis. Considering theory and method as mutually informative intellectual projects, we ask, how can our methods influence political investments that open up visionary possibilities and plans? How can we take a coalitional approach to disability politics as a method that is informed by collaboration, …

Finding Tender Roots: Affiliation, Disability, And Racial Melancholia In Monique Truong’S Bitter In The Mouth, Amanda Ong Jan 2020

Finding Tender Roots: Affiliation, Disability, And Racial Melancholia In Monique Truong’S Bitter In The Mouth, Amanda Ong

Journal of Feminist Scholarship

Early on in Bitter in the Mouth, we learn that the protagonist, Linda Linh-Dao Nguyen Hammerick, has auditory-gustatory synesthesia—that is, nearly every word she hears evokes a specific taste. Hammerick, for example, tastes like Dr. Pepper and Linda tastes like mint. There are many articles that analyze Linda’s synesthesia but few articles approach the text through the lens of disability studies. In this article, I employ feminist disability studies and diaspora studies to argue that Linda's identity as a disabled transracial adoptee allow her to seek out additional forms of affiliation and kinship. By constructing an alternative family tree …

Towards A Trans Feminist Disability Studies, Niamh Timmons Jan 2020

Towards A Trans Feminist Disability Studies, Niamh Timmons

Journal of Feminist Scholarship

In this article, I investigate the ways in which Transfeminism and Trans Women can be more integrated and entangled within feminist disability studies and Disability Justice, and vice versa. This would make the field a seemingly rich arena for considering the linkages between Trans Women, Transfeminism, dis/ability, and feminism. Yet, the primary texts of the feminist disability studies consistently leave out Trans Women in their analyses. Specific inclusion and highlighting the experiences of Trans Women, especially Trans Women who are disabled, is often missing from disability rights and disability justice projects. This is especially alarming given the way Trans folks, …

Gender Diversity, Women’S Leadership, And Consensus In State Supreme Courts, Meghan E. Leonard, Joseph V. Ross Jan 2020

Gender Diversity, Women’S Leadership, And Consensus In State Supreme Courts, Meghan E. Leonard, Joseph V. Ross

Faculty Publications – Politics and Government

In this article, we argue that the leadership of women as chief justice or the majority opinion author, as well as an increased presence of women on the panel, should increase the likelihood of unanimous decisions and the size of majority coalitions in state supreme courts. Using an original dataset of cases in three policy areas from all state supreme courts from 1990-2015, we uncover some surprising results. In some issue areas, majority coalitions are larger when a woman serves as the majority opinion author, though we see smaller coalitions when more women are on the court and a man …

Aids And The Distribution Of Crises: Foreword, Preface, And Introduction, Alexandra Juhasz, Nishant Shahani, Jih-Fei Cheng Jan 2020

Aids And The Distribution Of Crises: Foreword, Preface, And Introduction, Alexandra Juhasz, Nishant Shahani, Jih-Fei Cheng

Publications and Research

AIDS and the Distribution of Crises engages with the AIDS pandemic as a network of varied historical, overlapping, and ongoing crises born of global capitalism and colonial, racialized, gendered, and sexual violence. Drawing on their investments in activism, media, anticolonialism, feminism, and queer and trans of color critiques, the scholars, activists, and artists in this volume outline how the neoliberal logic of “crisis” structures how AIDS is aesthetically, institutionally, and politically reproduced and experienced.

The Effect Of Self-Control And Grit On Female Leader Emergence, Heather E. Mitterer Jan 2020

The Effect Of Self-Control And Grit On Female Leader Emergence, Heather E. Mitterer

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Women account for 47% of the total workforce in the United States, but only 27% of women hold executive positions. The purpose of this study was to assess whether and to what extent a significant relationship exists between self-control and grit, as well as the effect that both have on female leader emergence within male-dominated industries of manufacturing, computer science, and engineering in the United States. The goal of this research was to show how gender stereotypes shape a woman’s journey to leadership, with a focus that does not characterize women as victims of discrimination, but rather empowers women to …

Acculturative Experiences Of African American Military Wives In An Arctic Environment, Demetria Roshan White Jan 2020

Acculturative Experiences Of African American Military Wives In An Arctic Environment, Demetria Roshan White

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

United States military wives typically relocate every few years with their active-duty husbands. But little is known about the acculturative stress and stressors associated with relocating and reestablishing a military home in an Arctic environment. This qualitative research focused on African American women who were also military wives and the acculturative stress they encountered in relocating to an Arctic environment. Face to face interviews provided a platform for 10 military wives to share their personal experiences. The acculturative stress that African American military wives’ acculturative stress and stressors encountered in relocating from a non-Arctic to an Arctic environment are not …

African American Women’S Perceptions About Double Jeopardy And Mentoring In The Federal Government, Fatimah Pierce Jan 2020

African American Women’S Perceptions About Double Jeopardy And Mentoring In The Federal Government, Fatimah Pierce

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Research shows that women’s leadership development can be fostered through gender-based mentoring. However, even when involved in gender-based mentoring relationships, African American women face additional challenges due to the intersectionality of their race and gender, often known as “double jeopardy.” The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore how this intersectionality shapes African American women leaders’ perceptions about their gender-based mentoring experiences from the perspectives of both mentors and protégés. The theoretical framework for this study was Black feminist thought. One research question and two subquestions addressed the role of intersectionality, the benefits and challenges of gender-based mentoring, and …
