Betty Wiseman graduated from Belmont College and began teaching health and physical education in 1966. She was the founder and coach of the Belmont women’s basketball team, the Rebelettes (now Bruins), in 1968. At the time, it was one of the first women’s collegiate teams in the southeast. She was inducted into the Belmont Athletics Hall of Fame in 1981. She was also inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. Wiseman coached the women’s team for 16 years (1968- 1984) before moving into athletic administration at Belmont. She served as Assistant Athletics Director until her retirement in …

The field for research on women offenders provides an extensive opportunity for scientific investigation. Many writers (Gibbons, 1971; Cunningham, 1964; Sutherland, 1968) have discussed the causes of crime and their resulting social implications. Organized mass presentations of the movement of crime among women is negligible. Today female incarcerates make up approximately 11 per cent (Lerner, 1972) of the total number in state and federal penitentiaries. Previous research (Cunningham, 1964) on female felons found poor self-concept, excessive dependency and pathological emotionality to be a consistent pattern in women criminals. Other research (Apfeldorf, 1971; Guze, 1959) found criminal and non-criminal groups could …

The purpose of this study was to try to determine whether or not the way that a homosexual recalled his parent child relationships might be a function of the population from which he was drawn.

The primary hypothesis of this paper was that attitudes would not differ significantly between homosexual and heterosexual groups. A secondary hypothesis was that attitudes would not differ significantly between groups in each area covered; therapy, social action, and non-social action.

Sixty male homosexuals and 60 male heterosexuals volunteered to participate in this study.

In this research practicum we were concerned with the measurement and implications of factors which influence the meaning of work for white American women. The present study was a pilot study for the second part of a research project proposed by the Human Interaction Research Institute (H.I.R.I.). John Marks, Ph.D., was co-director of the first part of the project and is the director of this study.

Part I of the "Meaning of Work" project examined alternative life styles and corresponding career choices made by young men. This study identified values, aspirations, backgrounds, and characteristics of men who were grouped as …

The purpose of this study was two-fold. Part one was to develop an attitude questionnaire which could be used to discriminate between women with a traditionalist or liberated attitude toward toward their role in society. Part two was to choose Ss on the basis of their responses to the questionnaire and find behavioral manifestations of these attitudes. The assumption was made that the underlying difference between the two attitudes was the acceptance or rejection of male superiority.

Women's Studies Quarterly

In the spring of 1970, feminism was introduced into a small, private school in Brooklyn, New York. Woodward School students, 60% white, 40% black, primarily middle-class but with many on scholarship, range from nursery school age through eighth grade. The school is progressive, relying on open classroom teaching in lower grades and on individual attention to older students. Feminist change at Woodward was begun by a few women who had been in consciousness-raising groups. Through informal communication, a group of at first ten, then as many as thirty women began to meet to discuss what was happening to their daughters …

We can now count upwards of 1,000 women's studies courses, the major bulk still in literature, sociology, and history departments. New course titles continue to appear: Asian Women (CUNY/City College); Sexism and Schools (U. Massachusetts); Rhetoric of Women (U. Denver); Biology of Women (Portland State U.). Women in Spanish Culture (U. Washington); Men and Masculinity (U. Wisconsin). Courses continue to appear in law schools and schools of education, and in a sprinkling of other professional or graduate schools. But the big news is the development of women's studies programs.

Some 50 high school teachers have been teaching feminist courses, a good majority of which are either social studies or English courses. The others include a family living course; a course called "Prejudice"; a seminar entitled "Our Bodies, Our Selves" taught at a private girls' school; a summer program for third world high school women in Springfield, Massachusetts; and a discussion for women students at an urban street school.
