A Literary Evaluation Of Black Female Interaction In Toni Morrison's "Beloved", "Sula," "Jazz", Carol Ann Davenport
A Literary Evaluation Of Black Female Interaction In Toni Morrison's "Beloved", "Sula," "Jazz", Carol Ann Davenport
English Theses & Dissertations
This Master's thesis consists of three chapters that examine the roles, circumstances and effects of racism and sexism on the black female characters in three of Toni Morrison's novels, Beloved, Sula and Jazz. I propose that the elements of racism and sexism have left the female characters, Sethe, Denver, Ella, etc. in Beloved with few choices in life. Further, I suggest that the theme of "choice versus no choice" perpetuates hatred and self-hatred among black women and results in "metaphoric scarring." I explore in the characters, Sula, Eva, Hannah, Nel, and the black Bottom women, the damage inflicted on black …
Against A Politics Of Desire: Lesbians Romance And Film, Angela Anelalani Cantrell
Against A Politics Of Desire: Lesbians Romance And Film, Angela Anelalani Cantrell
English Theses & Dissertations
Within much of feminist theory, the lesbian has become much more than a woman-who-loves-other-women-sexually: the lesbian has become a metaphor for female creativity and a female autonomy freed from heterosexual aesthetics, gender model constraints, indeed, anything deemed patriarchal, i.e., misogyny, racism, capitalism, etc. Throughout my analysis of four films, I will argue that lesbian, when used as a metaphor, is a Romantic metaphor; in other words, feminist strategies that employ lesbian-as-metaphor are subscribing to a Romantic vision of lesbian sexuality. Although this is not saying anything new--feminists since the early seventies have questioned the romanticization of femaleness and lesbianism--I hope …

What can I say about the great writer whom we are gathered here to commemorate that is new, witty or informative or even interesting? After all, you will appreciate that I am not an academic so I can't offer you a Marxist viewpoint, certainly not a feminist one and not even a deconstructionist one. I'm not a biographer either so can't tell you about my latest book, full of such delicious new theories and completely free of any stuffy old evidence to support them. I'm not involved with the media so I can't tell you about camera angles on Dorothea. …

A Tribute To Gabriel Woolf On His "Jubilee"- From The President Of The George Eliot Fellowship, Jonathan Ouvry, Jonathan Ouvry
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
June 1994 saw the 25th anniversary of Gabriel Woolf s involvement with the George Eliot Fellowship, working with and for the Fellowship in its efforts to promote interest in George Eliot's life and works. We are very fortunate that George Eliot is, and always has been an important element in Gabriel's professional life as an actor and reader, for the partnership has been a particularly happy one.
It was very propitious that Gabriel was reading on BBC Radio his highly acclaimed adaptation of Middlemarch in an unprecedented 50 episodes just as we were seeking someone to open an exhibition marking …
