Wreath-Laying In Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey 1998, Roy Hattersley Jun 1998

Wreath-Laying In Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey 1998, Roy Hattersley

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

I take a strange pleasure in being associated, no matter how vicariously, with the greatest novelist in the English language. I am by no means sure that she would approve of this event. Asked about God, Immortality and Duty - strange topics of conversation to be raised during an afternoon's stroll - 'she pronounced with terrible earnestness how inconceivable was the first, how unbelievable the second and how peremptory and absolute the third'. But there she is in black, polished marble on the floor of Westminster Abbey - the junkyard of the nation's vanities.

She keeps appropriate company, in a …

Chik Tek Symposium Revisited, Helen Wood Jun 1998

Chik Tek Symposium Revisited, Helen Wood

SWITCH

The 1998 article, "Chik Tek Symposium Revisited", by Helen Wood, consists of interviews with female artists who all used technology in their work. The Chik Tek symposium took place in November 1997 at the San Jose Museum of Art where many women would share their works and thoughts through presentations and discussions. The title of the show, "Chik Tek" seemed questionable due to the fact that this show was meant to discuss women, and the equality in their work and the art or tech field. Yet, the title was rather stereotypical for women who wanted to encourage empowerment and feminism. …

A Report On Cyberfeminism, Alex Galloway Jun 1998

A Report On Cyberfeminism, Alex Galloway

SWITCH

A paper highlighting several books that explain theories of “cyberfeminism” by looking at works created by Sadie Plant, Sandy Stone and VNS Matrix. The author highlights written materials like Zeros and Ones (Sadie Plant, 1997) and The War of Desire and Technology (Sandy Stone, 1995) created by cyberfeminists to accredit the innovations of women in technological spaces. Though cyberfeminism has no concrete territory, an argument analyzed by the author entertains the idea that “technology is inherently feminine”, despite the male dominated industry of technology. The author also highlights Stone’s idea that female and queer-friendly bodies inhabit virtual spaces online which …

Wreath-Laying In The George Eliot Memorial Garden Nuneaton, May 1998, Margaret Jennings

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

In paying tribute to George Eliot today we acknowledge a debt of gratitude owed to her for the legacy of wonderful novels which have enriched so many lives during both the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

As we approach the twenty-first century I find myself considering how her work will be greeted by the coming generations, indeed not just in a new century but in a new millenium.

In the early part of this century, the Bloomsbury writer Virginia Woolf helped restore George Eliot's standing as a great novelist by claiming that Middlemarch was one of the few novels for grown-up …

Giving Her A Voice: The Representation Of The Black Woman In Four Short Stories, Jennifer Sheeler May 1998

Giving Her A Voice: The Representation Of The Black Woman In Four Short Stories, Jennifer Sheeler

Theses & Honors Papers

Black women have had to work very hard to pull themselves up the social ladder. Literature reflects society, and the black female experience in the South is a part of American society which has not been overlooked by its literature. This thesis examines short stories by the similarities and tempered differences to develop a closer understanding of the true black female experience. The examination found that the gender and race of each author of the four short stories does not correspond to the amount of power each one gives to his or her black female character the way the reader …

Perspectives On History: New Orleans's Women In William Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom! And Anne Rice's The Feast Of All Saints, Stacey Morgan Ford Apr 1998

Perspectives On History: New Orleans's Women In William Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom! And Anne Rice's The Feast Of All Saints, Stacey Morgan Ford

Theses & Honors Papers

The thesis examines the perspectives on history in New Orleans ' women in William Faulkner 's Absalom, Absalom and Anne Rice's The Feast of All Saints. This thesis looks at historical sources, the most detailed and unbiased of which have been written within the last twenty-five years. The information is then applied to the works of Faulkner and Rice. The thesis concludes that both of the writes provide portrayals which serve their own purposes. Faulkner’s image of the world is vivid, but, it is still only an image, a picture. Faulkner’s purposes serve only as the symbol of slavery at …

Extra-Household Norms And Intra-Household Bargaining: Gender In Sudan And Burkina Faso, Michael Kevane Apr 1998

Extra-Household Norms And Intra-Household Bargaining: Gender In Sudan And Burkina Faso, Michael Kevane

Economics

This paper argues that future empirical strategies for approaching the problem of deepening relative poverty for women in sub-Saharan Africa might focus on distinguishing and weighing two complementary determinants of the process. One determinant is the changing distribution of intra-household bargaining power. The other determinant is the changing constellation of social norms that constrain and regulate the economic activities of women. The paper shows how fruitful this dichotomization may be in the context of an analysis of women's economic activities in western Sudan and south-western Burkina Faso. In western Sudan the military regime deliberately brought about changes, at the very …

Man To Man: A Psychodynamic/ Developmental Understanding Of Adult Male Same-Sex Friendship, Len D. Mccoy Apr 1998

Man To Man: A Psychodynamic/ Developmental Understanding Of Adult Male Same-Sex Friendship, Len D. Mccoy

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Within psychology there has been a historic lack of literature on male development at the social, personal and intrapsychic levels. This is currently being remediated somewhat, but large voids still exist. Not only is male development under-represented, but there is even less research on the development and attributes of men's same-sex friendships. This study describes typical strengths and deficits in male friendships. The areas of deficit include the lack of emotional closeness many men experience with each other and the decline in friends that many men experience post-adolescence. An analysis of developmental and psychodynamic issues seeks to help illuminate the …
