Review Of Laura Doyle's (Ed.) Bodies Of Resistance: New Phenomenologies Of Politics, Agency, And Culture, Ladelle Mcwhorter Apr 2002

Review Of Laura Doyle's (Ed.) Bodies Of Resistance: New Phenomenologies Of Politics, Agency, And Culture, Ladelle Mcwhorter

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Bodies of Resistance is a collection of ten essays on embodiment and its various forms of resistance to disciplinary regimes, plus a lengthy introduction by the editor, Laura Doyle. The essays are paired and divided into five sections, each with its own brief introduction, which tends to make the book seem more like a patchwork than a unified whole; nevertheless, Doyle insists on its cohesion. Most of the ten authors, she says, are engaged in what she calls “postmodern phenomenology” (xiii). (The final essay, “The Dimensions of History: Colonial Mapping, Architecture, and the Perils of ‘Constructive Phenomenology’” by Daniel Bertrand …

Key Health Issues Facing Latinas, Dharma E. Cortés, Helen Cajigas, Odilia Bermúdez

Gastón Institute Publications

Acknowledging the relationship that exists among health outcomes, socioeconomic factors, and access to health care is key to understanding the health status of Latinas in Massachusetts. For example, poverty disproportionately affects Latinos in Massachusetts, and they have the lowest rate of health insurance in the Commonwealth despite the fact that Massachusetts has one of the most inclusive and comprehensive public health insurance programs in the nation. This situation impacts access to regular health care for Latinos and affects their overall health status. This fact sheet provides information on the following health areas of particular concern to Latinas: maternal and child …

Invisible Men In Family Planning: Determinants Of Men's Unmet Need In Bangladesh, Mahmuda Khatun Apr 2002

Invisible Men In Family Planning: Determinants Of Men's Unmet Need In Bangladesh, Mahmuda Khatun

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

The prevalence of unmet need for family planning is a primary justification for family planning programs, but the prevalence of men's unmet need for family planning and causes of unmet need have not been much explored. This study introduces the concept of men's unmet need for family planning. Using the data from Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey of 1996-97, this study examined the effect of some important correlates (age, socio-economic status, availability of the family planning services, and knowledge about contraceptive methods) on the unmet need for family planning. This study was designed to address the research questions: Do individual …

Chipping Away At The Gendered Wall Implications For Being A Woman Sociologist, Rebecca Fogerty Grove Apr 2002

Chipping Away At The Gendered Wall Implications For Being A Woman Sociologist, Rebecca Fogerty Grove

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate what factors may determine productivity among sociology professors and factors that-affect promotions and hiring. In today's academic institutions, the gender barrier is considered nonexistent; however, the actual existence of the gender barrier is often apparent in departmental hiring decisions and university tenure policies. With knowledge of current, often subtle, biased standards, the gender barrier can begin to be dismantled to offer true equality for all potential and current professors. The data was collected in 2001, during the fall academic semester from departments of sociology (n=2 l 8). This thesis looks at the …

Mothers In The Media: Blamed And Celebrated -- An Examination Of Drug Abuse And Multiple Births., Sonya Charles, Tricha Shivas

Philosophy and Religious Studies Department Faculty Publications

The media has always had a profound interest in mothers and birth stories. This study examined the difference between media portrayal of 'good' mothers and 'bad' mothers. Did the media cover potential harm to fetuses and would-be children in the same way for two groups of mothers: (a) pregnant women addicted to illicit drugs and (b) women who chose to continue a high-order, multiple birth pregnancy? Two searches were conducted on Lexis-Nexis, one with keywords 'McCaughey and birth' and another with the keywords 'pregnancy and illegal drugs.' A total of 210 articles were coded for the McCaughey search, and 90 …

Music From The Heart, Buffalo Gay Men's Chorus

Programs

"You'll Never Walk Alone" from Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel and he great Quaker hymn "How Can I Keep From Singing" represent our response to the nightmarish events that occurred in our nation on September 11th. It was a significant date for the chorus, as it was the first rehearsal; rather than cancel after two years of planning and struggling, it was decided to go on and remember those who had perished in the terrorist attacks on that day. The Quakers, or Friends, are a nonviolent peace loving, pacifist religious group and this is their greatest hymn.

Girls In Motion: World War I As A Catalyst For Change In The Cultural And Fictive Landscape Of American Girlhood, Emily Honey

Honors Theses

The girls' series fiction of the First World War is particularly adept at portraying both the service of women and their idealization, simultaneously encouraging young women to go out into the workforce in the name of patriotism and discouraging them from giving up their roles as the traditional caretakers of men.

Celling Black Bodies: Black Women In The Global Prison Industrial Complex, Julia Sudbury Jan 2002

Celling Black Bodies: Black Women In The Global Prison Industrial Complex, Julia Sudbury

Sociology

The 1980s and 1990s have witnessed an explosion in the population of women prisoners in Europe, North America, and Australasia, accompanied by a boom in prison construction. This article argues that this new pattern of women's incarceration has been forged by three overlapping phenomena. The first is the fundamental shift in the role of the state that has occurred as a result of neo-liberal globalization. The second and related phenomenon is the emergence and subsequent global expansion of what has been labelled a 'prison industrial complex' made up of an intricate web of relations between state penal institutions, politicians and …

Journeys: A Critical Analysis Of The Diary Of Sarah L. Wadley, Regina C. Davis Jan 2002

Journeys: A Critical Analysis Of The Diary Of Sarah L. Wadley, Regina C. Davis

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

As a young woman living in Louisiana during the Civil War, Sarah Lois Wadley documented in her diary the fractured, conflicted perspective that was her experience as a woman living in the war ravaged South. Her writing is evidence of the confusion she felt as a result of the discrepancy between the expectations of Southern patriarchal society and her own needs as a woman. Wadley’s diary is a complex text similar to a novel in that it relates events through a construct that reflects her response to her reader’s/society’s expectations. From a deconstructionist perspective, the power of Wadley’s text lies …

El Espacio Fantástico En Tres Cuentos De Emilia Pardo Bazán O La Reafirmación De La Sociedad Patriarcal, Beatriz Trigo
