An Exploration Into The Social And Emotional Effects Of K-12 Music Education, Jerrod T. Perry Oct 2024

An Exploration Into The Social And Emotional Effects Of K-12 Music Education, Jerrod T. Perry

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

In music education, a student must learn to read music notation, develop eye-hand-mind coordination, develop keen listening skills, develop team skills for playing in an ensemble, and develop the discipline to practice. Several research findings show that musical training is a powerful intervention that could help students emotionally and intellectually mature. This research aims to connect the current research on music education with the lack of exploration and knowledge to find the correlation between music and students’ academic success. The methodology used for this study will be a quantitative historical study format directed to discover research-backed evidence based on this …

Dyslexia And Sight-Reading: Perceptions Of Upper Woodwind Instrumental Students With Dyslexia And Their Approach To Sight-Reading Study, Kristen S. Spiridon Oct 2024

Dyslexia And Sight-Reading: Perceptions Of Upper Woodwind Instrumental Students With Dyslexia And Their Approach To Sight-Reading Study, Kristen S. Spiridon

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological research study examines the sight-reading abilities and perceptions of eight to ten high school, dyslexic, upper woodwind students from locations in the United States. The study involves students sight-reading an etude that participants had not seen previously. Though studies featuring note reading and dyslexic students are well documented, the literature has not fully addressed this phenomenon among high-school-aged students and upper woodwind students, who regularly encounter the most technically challenging rhythmic figures. The study includes eight to ten dyslexic upper woodwind high school students sightreading the etude and observing their execution. Each student completed a survey …

This article features an original innovative curriculum material and specifically explores the question: To what degree can a collaborative professional development program featuring innovative curriculum materials help social studies teachers understand and implement a powerful social studies approach? Findings suggest the professional development program and its innovative curriculum materials helped teachers promote substantive pedagogical thinking …

Democracy Can Be Dangerous Work: The Story Of Youthbuilders Civic Education Program 1938-1948, Jessica Shiller

Democracy & Education

This article describes the work of a civic education program in New York City schools called Youthbuilders, which existed from 1938 to 1948. Youthbuilders' aim was to engage youth in civic education projects and teach them about their place in a democracy and worked with them to support racial and social equality. Shortly after World War II, they were attacked by a conservative Catholic organization that was working to eliminate groups associated with so-called Communist beliefs like social justice and racial equality. Youthbuilders shut their doors by 1948. The story is one that helps us understand the fragility of working …

The Terminological Objections Between Ibn Malik And Abu Hayyan Al- Andalousi: An Analytical And Fundamental Study., Taha Abboud

Al Jinan الجنان

Grammar books are replete with various terms and concepts, encompassing diverse boundaries and connotations that have contributed to the study of grammar in one manner or another. The idea serves as the fundamental dimension in terminology, acting as the cohesive step requisite for its sociological applicability and usability. Before the manifestation of a term in its physical form, it existed as an abstract mental image, reflecting the amalgamation of individual topics, generally unified by standard features or as an intellectual representation of tangible and abstract entities. Terms are, therefore, symbols of concepts as we perceive them, underscoring that concepts were …

First-Gen Voices: Creative and Critical Narratives on the First-Generation College Experience

Through a first-person perspective, we travel along to Costa Rica with LMU’s First To Go students. Utilizing a long format, home video style, the goal is to communicate the authentic experiences that occurred during the trip. It’s one thing to be a young adult getting the chance to explore new parts of the world, but it’s a different privilege to get to do it with others that you can connect with. So much so that in the couple months preceding the trip, I found myself dealing with that post-trip depression. However, in that state, I found the beauty of being …

First-Gen Voices: Creative and Critical Narratives on the First-Generation College Experience

I never thought that when I would start traveling internationally that it would be alone I always imagined it with my family, but never did I imagine traveling to really interact with the communities either I always thought of traveling as leisure. I guess I could say this impression was not implemented when OI started traveling as I started to notice how I didn’t want to do touristy things and I really just wanted to be. To be there to be present to be aware and I think that is what I enjoyed the most about my trip to Costa …
