in this issue. . .

JUDITH WEISSMAN revisions the later work of Emily Dickinson as that of a lucid, sane, generous, less volcanic woman more at ease with herself and her beliefs. A specialist in nineteenth-century poetry and fiction and Professor of English at Syracuse University, Weissman published Half Savage and Hardy and Free: Woman and Rural Radicalism in the Nineteenth-Century Novel last year. She is presently working on a book dealing with poetry and the theory of the bicameral mind.

Mindful of Ezra Pound's boast he was "in such a beautiful position to save the public's soul by punching …

A Study Of The Effects Of Writing Instruction Versus Writing And Reading Instruction On 10th Grade English Students, Patricia E.G. Craig Jun 1988

A Study Of The Effects Of Writing Instruction Versus Writing And Reading Instruction On 10th Grade English Students, Patricia E.G. Craig

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The effects of writing instruction as opposed to writing and reading instruction were studied on 10th grade English students’ reading comprehension and writing. Two groups (classes) completed pretests and pre-sample writing. Then, both groups were given writing instruction while only one group was given related reading skills instruction. Finally, both groups completed posttests and post-sample writings.

An analysis of covariance of the pre-and posttest data was done. It revealed no significant difference between the two groups related to reading comprehension. However, a significant difference existed between the two groups related to language expression (editing skills or writing sub-skills). The …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

JOHN W. MURPHY describes the discontents and contentions of postmodernism in assessing the world of today, be it science, religion, or other institutions in society, and suggests modernism's emphasis on order may exact a higher price than the imprecision of postmodernism. Currently Associate Professor of Sociology at Arkansas State University, Murphy has, in addition to numerous articles, published The Social Philosophy of Martin Buber, The Underside of High-tech, and Technology and Human Productivity.

Americans should celebrate their Constitution's two-hundredth anniversary by considering changes in the fundamental law, not simply by congratulating themselves on its longevity …

Kingdom By The Sea: A Screenplay, John C. Jarvis Jr. Apr 1988

Kingdom By The Sea: A Screenplay, John C. Jarvis Jr.

Institute for the Humanities Theses

"Kingdom by the Sea" is a feature-length, theatrical screenplay, modeled on the surrealistic works of Bergman and Fellini. In this country the concepts of experimental theater have seldom been put into a full-length film. This work is intended to help fill that void.

There, the protagonist is seeking the ideal, but when he finds it, he cannot free himself of materialistic desires or needs. In this sense he destroys his utopia and descends into a place called Mog, where the dark side of the ideal dwells. …

Gesture Studies, Andrea Virginia Collins Apr 1988

Gesture Studies, Andrea Virginia Collins

English Theses & Dissertations

I have entered a phase in my life in which I seem to be becoming distanced from the world around me. At this point, the cause does not matter: is it really age? culture? who knows? The change, separation, the forced adaptation brought about by experience is the subject the collection addresses. What happens next when one is set apart from everything, separated even from one's own rational self, by circumstance? The collection explores this phenomenon.

Themes and voice unify these poetic gesture studies of separation, death, memory and illusion. The title poem, "Gesture Studies," introduces the theme separation and …
