Analyzing Rap Through Poetry: “Zen Scientist” By Milo & Kenny Segal, Mason S. Jensen
Analyzing Rap Through Poetry: “Zen Scientist” By Milo & Kenny Segal, Mason S. Jensen
Anthós
milo, now known as R.A.P. Ferraria, has described his music as synonymous with poetry. This article examines his song “zen scientist,” testing the linkage of poetry and rap through poetic analysis. Jensen analyzes the song through metrical systems, marking it in scansion, poetic feet, and rhyme to delineate rhythm and to show how rhythm is created and experimented with. Jensen then applies Vendler and Chan’s methods for deriving poetic meaning, providing potential interpretations of “zen scientist.” Jensen argues these poetic methods dissect the rap song into perspicuity. The article concludes that poetic analysis can be used effectively to analyze rap …
At The Mercy Of All Things: Nurturing Experimental Queer Writing On Embodied Mothering, Charley Koenig
At The Mercy Of All Things: Nurturing Experimental Queer Writing On Embodied Mothering, Charley Koenig
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is an exploration of the ability of experimental queer writing to grow and transform expressions of mothering and care. The moves made here—both in the scholarship and anchor texts examined herein and in my own contributions to this effort—work to dethatch those toxic dominating narratives on motherhood, enforced and reinforced by our current Western society and culture, that contaminate and restrict our constructions of what it means to be and do mother. The collective work of experimental queer writers makes possible more nuanced, realistic, messy, complex, varied, embodied, liberating, and literally and figuratively dirty renditions of mothering and …
The Masa That Holds Us: Indigenous Epistemologies And The Food We Share, Necahual Gamboa
The Masa That Holds Us: Indigenous Epistemologies And The Food We Share, Necahual Gamboa
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The U.S. higher education system is built on histories and infrastructures of colonization, white supremacy, and western imperialism. Among many of the institutions produced from a history of domination and genocide, the systems of higher education need to shift their focus to decolonial frameworks including Indigenous epistemologies (ways of knowing and being) in order to work toward true reparations between these imperial systems and the Indigenous people they have displaced and disregarded. This project brings these systems into question, but also uses art, prose, and storytelling to better align with what it means or what it could look like to …
A Ramble On Prayer: A Collaboration Between An Artist And A Writer, Alberta Natasia Adji, Harrison Waed See
A Ramble On Prayer: A Collaboration Between An Artist And A Writer, Alberta Natasia Adji, Harrison Waed See
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
A Ramble on Prayer is a collaborative project that involves multiple stages of interpretation, as creative works are exchanged in response to one another during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. This article explores the authors’ experiences of collaboration from the positions of painter, creative writer, and researchers. This collaboration is a reflexive and dialogic space for creative self-narration/expression, allowing Adji’s and See’s imagination and subjectivities to discern, develop, and reciprocate each other’s work. In parallel to these creative reciprocations, also sits a dialogue concerning their collaborative processes to reflexively analyse how the collaborators’ use of visual …
A Moving Cause: Travel Notes Towards Pilgrimage As Creative Writing Process, Elizabeth Reid Boyd
A Moving Cause: Travel Notes Towards Pilgrimage As Creative Writing Process, Elizabeth Reid Boyd
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Pilgrimage Studies is a growing field across the arts and humanities, yet pilgrimage writing is not established as a distinct genre. In this article I share my exploration of pilgrimage as a creative writing process and potential genre. As a social scientist and a creative writer, my approach is qualitative and interdisciplinary, drawing upon an on-the-ground social constructivist perspective and definitions of genre as social action. This includes an ethnomethodological account of my practice that distils ten narrative and thematic elements in the pilgrimage writing process. These elements hinge on the leitmotif of pilgrimage writing being ‘a moving cause’, with …
Literary Homeplace As A Site Of Knowing And Healing, Shamonique Hassell
Literary Homeplace As A Site Of Knowing And Healing, Shamonique Hassell
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The concept of literary homeplace serves as a locus of rhetorical healing for Black women, emphasizing their lived experiences and creative expressions as forms of resistance and restoration (Collins, 1986; hooks, 1990; Nettles, 2001). The labor of Black women within families, churches, and artistic endeavors contributes to the cultivation of a collective consciousness surrounding oppression and healing (Edwards, 2010; Carey, 2016; Morrison, 1992). Building upon hooks’ (1990) notion of homeplace, this dissertation examines how Black women foster spaces characterized by care, dignity, and resilience (Hersey, 2022; Tate, 1984). Using personal narrative and articulating Black women’s voices, I position homeplace as …
Threshold: Stories & Graphic Memoir, Emily Kay Lewandowski
Threshold: Stories & Graphic Memoir, Emily Kay Lewandowski
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Threshold: Stories & Graphic Memoir, a collection of fiction and graphic memoir, explores the in-between stages of loss and grief. Both the fiction and graphic memoir pieces utilize the technique of the “narrative echo,” coined by John Gardner, to stylistically explore and interrogate these stages of in-betweenness. The final piece in this collection, “I Hope You Find Me On Mars,” is a queer expansion of Octavia Butler’s trilogy Lilith’s Brood. Each piece uses unique voice and styling to contribute to the larger literary community by interrogating manifestations of identity, queerness, and grief.
What I Was And Who I Am, And Before And After, Molly K. Del Rossi
What I Was And Who I Am, And Before And After, Molly K. Del Rossi
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
This thesis begins with a critical introduction which analyzes varying forms—such as the inverted sonnet—the schools of confessional and post-confessional poetry—and how they differ—and inspiration used for my creative work in poetry. I claim to be a poet who writes primarily based on personal memories. I chronicle my initial encounters with poetry as a teenager through the lens of confessionalism, as demonstrated by Eavan Boland and Anne Sexton. To exhibit my gained knowledge, I reference poetic theorists such as Richard Hugo, Charles Olson, Adrienne Rich, Mary Ruefle, and Gertrude Stein when analyzing which theories and dialogues influence my poetic style. …
Ordinary Signs, Practical Magic, Erin Patricia Tyler
Ordinary Signs, Practical Magic, Erin Patricia Tyler
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Ordinary Signs, Practical Magic outlines my personal wrestling with belief – in art, in spiritual intervention, in self, and in the quiet forces that guide us through the world. Using the frameworks of ordinary signs – tactile and visual cues that ground and orient me and practical magic – what I define as human intervention and the act of creation – this work examines how attention, care, and materiality shape my understanding of meaning and connection. Through visual data collection –photography, assemblage, collage, drawing, painting and found objects – alongside poetic writing and personal narrative, my thesis navigates the tension …

‘‘I Am Not This, Not Here, This Time’’: Claudia Emerson’S Infusion Suite As A Compelling Account Of The Lived Experience Of Cancer, Chris Foss
English & Linguistics Articles
Claudia Emerson’s Infusion Suite section within her poetry collection Impossible Bottle is a significant contemporary literary representation of cancer. In this twelve-poem sequence, Emerson dispenses with the typical martial metaphors so often used to represent this lived experience. Instead, she focuses on more mundane everyday moments in a way that acknowledges and respects the humanity of all those at the treatment center—especially that of the patients. Emerson refuses to airbrush out the daunting, debilitating aspects of cancer, but she also preserves space for light and life.
Climate Goodbyes: Reporting On Loss, Change And The Human Response In Montana, Madeline Jorden
Climate Goodbyes: Reporting On Loss, Change And The Human Response In Montana, Madeline Jorden
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This portfolio explores how climate-driven environmental change intersects with long-standing tensions over natural resource management, tribal sovereignty, and rural identity in Montana. It consists of three stories: a historically low water year at Flathead Lake that intensified disputes between tribal dam operators and non-tribal waterfront homeowners; the first confirmed presence of invasive smallmouth bass in the Bitterroot River, signaling warming stream conditions and ecological disruption; and a political narrative from Colstrip, where coal industry workers cling to promises of revival amid economic and regulatory decline. Each piece illustrates how climate change acts not only as an environmental force but also …

[Introduction]At the playground, my mother hid from me, I couldn’t find her, and I called her name a thousand times.
And when she reappeared, I ran to her, and she ran to me, and I clenched her neck, and I put my hands on her face, and I said, Where were you? Where were you? and she said, I’m so glad you found me. And we hugged, and she smiled as she cradled me, and I howled, like a gibbon, at her shoulder.
Reject Modernity, Embrace Tradition: Unpacking Gender Roles In Social Media Performances Of "The Good Life", Lauren Mar
Reject Modernity, Embrace Tradition: Unpacking Gender Roles In Social Media Performances Of "The Good Life", Lauren Mar
Scripps Senior Theses
What do JD Vance, tradwife influencers, and the “sprinkle sprinkle” movement have in common? They all have something to do with the increasing popularity of an apparent return to traditional gender roles. This thesis is an intersectional investigation of women’s gender roles in relation to class and race as they appear in different performances of “the good life” on social media. Through a series of personal essays, this thesis explores how these media examples represent a deeper political unhappiness with present conditions. This thesis takes the time to unpack the different sides of discourse surrounding each subject, and counters the …
Nonfiction Forms In Contemporary Poetry By Black And Asian American Writers, Elizabeth J. Mitchell
Nonfiction Forms In Contemporary Poetry By Black And Asian American Writers, Elizabeth J. Mitchell
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Writers experiment with form inside poetry for various reasons, including a desire for play. Creating poetry is a creative process that involves experimentation. This research highlights poetry that adapts established nonfiction forms into poetry forms, examining poetry published in 2000-2024 by Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander American (AANHPI) writers and Black writers (writers of African ancestry) within the United States. For writers of color especially, nonfiction forms can provide a different way of entering into conversations about race, ethnicity, gender, identity, power, privilege, and authority. This research examines poetry by A. Van Jordan, Franny Choi, Alison C. Rollins, …
