Great Tennis At The 2005 Us Open, Richard C. Crepeau
Great Tennis At The 2005 Us Open, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Thirty years ago the country was in a tennis frenzy. Television had discovered the sport and colorful and attractive personalities seemed to be in an endless supply as they paraded before the cameras. Public tennis courts were overcrowded with people from seven to seventy. At the indoor courts of the major cities you were lucky to be able to get a reservation to play between three and four o'clock in the morning. Manufacturers of tennis equipment were making money hand over fist, and the tennis ball factories working around the clock (what we would now term 24/7), could not meet …

Steroids, Success, And Ethics, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
This week Rafael Palmeiro met the wrath of the Canadian baseball public in Toronto where he was booed loud and long for either lying to the Congress and the public, his steroid use, or both. This is the most severe crowd disapproval he has experienced and he found it quite difficult to endure. Even the use of ear plugs did not seem to help.

Anita Desai's Fasting, Feasting And The Condition Of Women, Ludmila Volná
Anita Desai's Fasting, Feasting And The Condition Of Women, Ludmila Volná
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Anita Desai's Fasting, Feasting and the Condition of Women" Ludmila Volná presents a critical culture-based reading of Desai's novel Fasting, Feasting, a work that deals with the condition of women (not only) in India. Volná analyzes both female and the male sensitivities in the novel where Desai makes use of a double symbolic of food expressed throughout the novel by (not only literal) hunger. In Volná's view, Desai's Hindu imagery of sun/fire as patriarchal power and water, which, as the counterpart of the sun and fire, represents recognition of women’s condition and a possible way to …
Cultural Studies, Composition, And Pedagogy, Mark Mullen
Cultural Studies, Composition, And Pedagogy, Mark Mullen
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his paper, "Cultural Studies, Composition, and Pedagogy," Mark Mullen argues that while much cultural studies work makes claims for the transformative powers of a radical educational agenda, such work is often, surprisingly, deeply resistant to a complex discussion of pedagogy. The response to Mary Louise Pratt's theory of the "contact zone" offers a useful case study in this regard, and indicates the way in feelgood narratives of student and teacher empowerment are only made possible by a refusal to analyze the classroom as a workplace. Reliance upon depictions of the classroom as essentially an empty space playing host to …
The Staged Self In Mary Carleton's Autobiographical Narratives, Geraldine Wagner
The Staged Self In Mary Carleton's Autobiographical Narratives, Geraldine Wagner
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her paper, "The Staged Self in Mary Carleton's Autobiographical Narratives," Geraldine Wagner examines Mary Carleton's use of romance and picaresque modes of self-representation to appropriate and redefine counterfeiting as a legitimate means to identity. The most notorious female criminal of the English Restoration, Mary Carleton, captured the public's imagination in 1662 when she stood trial for bigamy. Although acquitted on insufficient evidence, the allegation that she was a common shoemaker's wife counterfeiting the identity of a German noblewoman spawned a war of pamphlets of competing biographical accounts between Carleton and her detractors. Wagner argues that these attempts to confine …
The Problematics Of A Social Constructivist Approach To Science, Bryce Christensen
The Problematics Of A Social Constructivist Approach To Science, Bryce Christensen
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his paper, "The Problematics of a Social Constructivist Approach to Science," Bryce Christensen takes John Gray's hope that science can serve as a remedy for anthropocentrism as an entry point for discussing the debate between scientific realists and social constructivists. Christensen examines the way science appears to buttress the realist position when it confronts humans with truths that contradict their expectations and desires. In his discussion, Christensen also surveys the ways that science fits within social constructivist theory when it serves identifiable social needs or advances identifiable group interests. Further, Christensen identifies eschatological cosmology as an extreme test case …

Hybridity And Whiteness In Claudine C. O'Hearn's Half And Half: Writings On Growing Up Biracial And Bicultural, Heather Latimer
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her paper, "Hybridity and Whiteness in Claudine C. O'Hearn's Half and Half: Writings on Growing up Biracial and Bicultural," Heather Latimer examines the autobiographical collection Half and Half: Writings on Growing up Biracial and Bicultural assembled and edited by Claudine C. O'Hearn. Latimer's analysis reveals how current models of hybridity theory are performed, articulated, and exemplified in the texts of O'Hearn's volume. In her analysis, Latimer explores the anxiety and tension about whiteness within hybridity theory, often reflected in the performance of hybrid aesthetics. Latimer argues that while some authors in Half and Half avoid talking about whiteness as …
The Quest For Body And Voice In Assia Djebar's So Vast The Prison, Susannah Rodríguez Drissi
The Quest For Body And Voice In Assia Djebar's So Vast The Prison, Susannah Rodríguez Drissi
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Using Northrop Frye's definition of the quest novel and Joseph Campbell's writings, Susannah Rodríguez Drissi explores in her paper, "The Quest for Body and Voice in Assia Djebar's So Vast the Prison," the motif of the journey as Djebar adapts it to her female characters. Rodríguez Drissi proposes that in previous studies concerning the hero -- such as in James Frazer's The Golden Bough or in Joseph Campbell's The Hero with a Thousand Faces -- women are relegated to a secondary role. Recently, however, it has become evident that the study of the woman as "heroine" is necessary to a …
Globalization, Ideology, And Narratives Of The East Asian Financial Crisis, Ezra Yoo-Hyeok Lee
Globalization, Ideology, And Narratives Of The East Asian Financial Crisis, Ezra Yoo-Hyeok Lee
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his paper, "Globalization, Ideology, and Narratives of the East Asian Financial Crisis," Ezra Yoo-Hyeok Lee analyzes the narratives of the East Asian financial "crisis" in 1997-98, arguing that it took place in the course of restructuring the world economy so that the first world would keep its hegemonic power. The East Asian financial crisis spread rapidly to the rest of the globe and in this urgent situation, the IMF: International Monetary Fund played its now typical role as a "savior of the world." Before the financial crisis, the East Asian economy was considered to be an exemplary model from …
Intercultural Communication And Speech Style, Fee-Alexandra Haase
Intercultural Communication And Speech Style, Fee-Alexandra Haase
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article, "Intercultural Communication and Speech Style," Fee-Alexandra Haase discusses intercultural communication as a concept for the production and analysis of speeches and written texts. Starting with a theoretical and historical perspective, Haase exemplifies selected intercultural patterns found in different cultures. Further, based on definitions of style in rhetoric from different cultural backgrounds from the ancient Greek culture up to modern approaches of rhetoricians, Haase proposes a concept for the analysis of texts employing aspects of rhetoric as an intercultural concept. Haase locates in her concept methods of composition used for the analysis of texts and spoken words within …

Watsuji And Deleuze And Guattari In The Climate Of Culture, Seth Jacobowitz
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Seth Jacobowitz, in his paper "Watsuji and Deleuze and Guattari in the Climate of Culture," analyzes theories of cultural properties in Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari's A Thousand Plateaus alongside Watsuji Tetsuro's prewar Climate and Culture. At stake in these investigations is the status of the West as a universalizing particular ratified by these authors in the instance of its own critique. We are confronted on the one hand with Deleuze and Guattari's exoticized, Orientalist promise of an alternative economy of meaning derived from the Balinese term for "plateau" and the morphology of the rhizome and, on the other hand, …

A Remarkable Weekend, Richard C. Crepeau
A Remarkable Weekend, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Watching Tiger Woods play golf is one of the great treats available to those who follow sport in the television age. Win, lose, or draw, Woods shows what it takes to operate at the highest levels of professional sport, and offers a role model for anyone who dreams of even minimal success at the lowest levels. At least two elements are essential, physical skill and mental focus. Woods has both in abundance, and it is the mental side of Woods' game that even the casual player of any sport can emulate.

Ethical Values In Sport, Richard C. Crepeau
Ethical Values In Sport, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
At times, the world of sport offers its fans moral and ethical questions of a formidable nature rivaling the questions pondered by medieval theologians. For example, who is morally more reprehensible: a baseball player who assaults a television cameraman or one who takes steroids after denying under oath that he had never taken steroids. Whose transgression is worse: a football player who fails a drug test or a hockey player who in a premeditated action assaults a fellow player with a sucker punch from behind, drives his head into the ice, and breaks his neck?

Ncaa Nickname Proscription, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
The NCAA, in whatever wisdom it may have remaining, has ruled that NCAA institutions who have "offensive and abusive" mascots and logos will not be allowed to host any post-season event nor participate in any post-season event while displaying such a logo or mascot. Eighteen universities have been named in this group. This is a ruling that has been a long time coming and one that represents many of the problems with organizations like the NCAA.

Whistler’S Fog And The Aesthetics Of Place, Bruce Janz
Whistler’S Fog And The Aesthetics Of Place, Bruce Janz
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
The concept of place has usually been understood as either a phenomenological, epistemological, or ethical category. An understanding of place as aesthetic or rhetorical, on the other hand, tends to focus on the widely varied uses of the concept. First, I sketch out the wide range of uses of place, that have been drawn from writings on the concept. These uses are not definitions of place, but rather functions that the term performs. Place stands in for other ideas, and allows access to different aspects of human experience. Second, I will draw from this range of uses some ideas about …

On Ethan Watter's Urban Tribes: A Generation Redefines Friendship, Family And Commitment, Danny Mayer
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
Outside of the 60s generation, there are few if any generational groupings as well known and discussed as Generation X, the term coined by Douglas Copeland to describe the generation approaching adulthood in the post-Reagan boom-years of the 1990s. As the subject of books (Generation X), movies (Reality Bites, Clerks, Slacker), TV dramas and sitcoms (Seinfeld, Friends, Ally McBeal, Sex and the City), and Prime Time news specials, there is seemingly little new to say about Gen X. It has long since been tagged as a generation …
Discovering Your Cinematic Cultural Identity, John Shelton Lawrence, Marty S. Knepper
Discovering Your Cinematic Cultural Identity, John Shelton Lawrence, Marty S. Knepper
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
This paired set explores the experience of cultural identities constructed by and experienced through popular film. The essay “Discovering Your Cinematic Cultural Identity” reflects the authors’ decades of residence in the state of Iowa and their personal irritation with the stereotypes that Hollywood regularly calls upon in evoking the American rural. We gained a new perspective on this sort of imagery when it surfaced again in Field of Dreams (1989) and The Bridges of Madison County novel (1992) and film (1995). Each of these films triggered unprecedented film tourism for the state. Through an exploration of these films and others …

The Sharper Image: Bringing Irish Nationalist Identity Into Focus, 1880-1923, Meghan M. Ferriter
The Sharper Image: Bringing Irish Nationalist Identity Into Focus, 1880-1923, Meghan M. Ferriter
History Theses & Dissertations
From 1880 to 1923, Irish nationalists created and sustained an independent cultural identity shaped by external and internal forces. British political cartoons reveal key external cultural perceptions of the Irish, while Irish nationalist writings endorse internal concepts of character and project political aims. Irish nationalists present an uninterrupted internal identity in pursuit of autonomy. Images published in Punch, or the London Charivari, provide external factors of identity that evolve from exaggerated threat to trivial concern while the nationalist political demands they represent escalate.
Identity is the product of complex interaction and compromise between external and internal definitions. Individuals …
Book Review: Breaking Into Baseball, Scott D. Peterson
Book Review: Breaking Into Baseball, Scott D. Peterson
Communication Faculty Publications
Ardell's book might very well be subtitled “The Seven Faces of Eve” as she argues for goddess worship theories for baseball's origins and then organizes the rest of the chapters around the seven ways in which women can interact with the game of baseball: as fans (both in and out of the stands), as players (both amateur and professional), as umpires, owners, and members of the media. Baseball's gender barrier (a first cousin to the game's now obsolete color barrier) provides a consistent and compelling undertone to the book as so many of the women that Ardell writes about (perhaps …
