The Cub Century, Richard C. Crepeau
The Cub Century, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Cubs’ fans are a hearty lot. Now only a year away from a "Century of Futility" one gets the strange feeling that two historical forces will collide next baseball season and the result could be of cataclysmic dimensions. Will the Cubs continue in their futility, or will they trump their own futility in a transcendent futility by denying themselves a distinctive badge of symmetric futility inherent in a perfect century of failure?

The Braves And Tbs, Richard C. Crepeau
The Braves And Tbs, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
I doubt that many people were watching late Sunday afternoon as the Atlanta Braves ended their disappointing season notching one final loss. I doubt if very many, other than longtime Brave followers, knew the significance of the moment. It was in fact the end of an era.
Greg Ryan And The Goalkeepers, Richard C. Crepeau
Greg Ryan And The Goalkeepers, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
It is sometimes called second-guessing. In this case, it was first-guessing. From the moment that U.S. Women's Soccer coach Greg Ryan announced that he would replace Hope Solo in goal with Briana Scurry for the semi-final match in the Women's World Cup, there was a outpouring of astonishment mixed with criticism directed at his decision. It defied belief then, and it defied belief even more after the fact as the U.S. Women suffered their worst defeat in World Cup play.
The Jazz Critic As Flâneur, Peter Schulman
The Jazz Critic As Flâneur, Peter Schulman
World Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications
“I love to watch you play,” a reporter once said to Duke Ellington during a television interview. As Ellington gracefully moved up and down the keyboard, he replied, grinning wistfully, “Playing? I’m not playing . . . I’m dreaming!”1 For the poet Jacques Réda, whose most famous works such as Les ruines de Paris (1977) and Amen (1988) chronicle his experiences as a modern flâneur in a Paris which is sometimes overtaken by what Marc Augé has labeled surmodernité,2 or an anaesthetizing over-abundance of technology and empty modern spaces, Réda has also led another life as a jazz critic, …
Female Sport Role Models: A Content Analysis Of Espn.Com, Michelle Lou Redmond
Female Sport Role Models: A Content Analysis Of Espn.Com, Michelle Lou Redmond
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations
Opportunities for girls to participate in sports are growing by the minute. However, adolescent girls are dropping out from participating in athletics with many possible explanations. One explanation is the limited and sometimes controversial media attention female athletes receive. How are girls to know there is a sporting world out there for them if they are unable to see positive female athletic role models to emulate?
This study investigated ESPN.com to discover the trends of college basketball reporting during the 2007 NCAA Men's and Women's basketball tournaments. A content analysis was performed on ESPN .com to see if the media …

Tiger Woods And Roger Federer, Richard C. Crepeau
Tiger Woods And Roger Federer, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
In these first few weeks of college and professional football, upsets seemed to be the rule rather than the exception. There are two sports where upsets these days are as rare as a Cubs’ World Series victory. In golf and tennis, it is nearly always Tiger, Tiger, Tiger and Roger, Roger, Roger. These two athletes have established an astounding dominance in their sports as both enter the prime of their careers. They are both on pace to rewrite the record books and end their careers as the greatest players in the history of their sports.
Late-Summer Wackiness, Richard C. Crepeau
Late-Summer Wackiness, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
After a break from writing this column for several weeks, I am at a loss as to where to begin. The last few weeks have been full of stories from the wacky world of sport, and with the beginning of college football, the number of stories of crime and corruption have increased geometrically, although in fairness, the colleges have no monopoly on these.

Book Review: The Great God Baseball, Scott D. Peterson
Communication Faculty Publications
The stated goals of this book are both evangelical and scholarly as Hye seeks to convince his readers, including the casual and non-baseball varieties, to pick up the nine books in his "lineup." He also seeks to fill some of the gaps in sport literature scholarship and have his book serve as "an agent for the intellectual, spiritual, and emotional renewal offered by the great game and literature of baseball" (12).

The "Teucer Paradigm" And The Eastern Other In Western Literature, Maria Beatrice Bittarello
The "Teucer Paradigm" And The Eastern Other In Western Literature, Maria Beatrice Bittarello
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her paper, "The 'Teucer Paradigm' and the Eastern Other in Western Literature," Maria Beatrice Bittarello argues that modern representations of characters with mixed-blood heritage (Western and Eastern) are rooted in classical representations of the Middle East and that such representations are thematically re-cast from a literary thematic archetype elaborated on in the ancient Greek and Roman cultures. Bittarello examines how Greek and Roman authors portray the Greek mythological hero Teucer, son of Telamon and the Trojan princess Hesione. Teucer's liminal position allows him to be used in already in Greek and Roman culture both as colonizer and "bridge" between …
African Literature And The Role Of The Nigerian Government College Umuahia, Terri Ochiagha
African Literature And The Role Of The Nigerian Government College Umuahia, Terri Ochiagha
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Terri Ochiagha, in her paper "African Literature and the Role of the Nigerian Government College Umuahia," discusses how the college contributed towards nurturing the talent of some of the most relevant authors in African literary history. With the help of the testimonies of these authors in interviews, correspondence, essays, autobiographies, and with the aid of literary critics and scholars who realized the role the Umuahia College played in creating a literary elite, Ochiagha analyses this literary phenomenon and takes us on a journey through the school's literary ambience: its library and the novels which were later to prompt the authors' …
The Dream Scene And The Future Of Vision In The City Of Lost Children And Until The End Of The World, Donna Wilkerson-Barker
The Dream Scene And The Future Of Vision In The City Of Lost Children And Until The End Of The World, Donna Wilkerson-Barker
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article, "The Dream Scene and the Future of Vision in The City of Lost Children and Until the End of the World," Donna Wilkerson-Barker examines how these films investigate the place of imagination (or representation) in postmodern visual culture through their portrayal of technologized vision as an obstacle to experience. Drawing parallels between the dream scenes in these films and virtual reality and cyberspace, she argues that image technologies in The City of Lost Children and Until the End of the World lead to a dissociation of experience from corporeal reality, a dissociation that is ultimately linked to …
Twain's A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur's Court And U.S. Imperialism, Jennifer A. O'Neill
Twain's A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur's Court And U.S. Imperialism, Jennifer A. O'Neill
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her paper, "Twain's novel A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court and U.S. Imperialism," Jennifer A. O'Neill argues that while it Twain's text is commonly viewed as an attack on monarchy and the Catholic church, one of the book's primary focuses is U.S. imperialism. In the scholarship of Twain's text some have acknowledged the text as a discussion of colonialism, most tend to see it as an exaltation of "civilizing" efforts rather than the scalding indictment it was clearly intended to be. Indeed, Twain embraced U.S. colonial efforts in the Pacific early in his life but by the time …
Chaos Theory And Literature From An Existentialist Perspective, Yasser Khamees Ragab Aman
Chaos Theory And Literature From An Existentialist Perspective, Yasser Khamees Ragab Aman
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Yasser Khamees Ragab Aman proposes in his article "Chaos Theory and Literature from an Existentialist Perspective" that in literature the relation, principles, and processes of chaos and order can be analyzed from an existentialist perspective. Chaos lies at the heart of nothingness and order is the appearance of the achievement it tries to realize, temporary it may seem. Aman argues that with the application of chaos theory to works of literature may yield new insight and applies in his paper aspects of chaos theory reading three literary works which represent three different literatures and cultures, namely Arabic, English, and French. …
A Postmodern Solzhenitsyn?, William H. Thornton
A Postmodern Solzhenitsyn?, William H. Thornton
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
William H. Thornton undertakes in his article, "A Postmodern Solzhenitsyn?," to bring Solzhenitsyn in from the cold, critically speaking, by closing the gap between him and his many postmodern detractors. That gap has been premised on the rough equivalence of poststructuralism and postmodernism. The postmodern realism advanced in this study challenges not only Solzhenitsyn's critics but his own stated aversion to postmodernism. Operating on both a microhistorical and macrohistorical plane, Solzhenitsyn's literary historiography testifies to the awesome scope of the gulag while never losing sight of its human factor. The double vision of Solzhenitsyn's proto-postmodern referentiality, a simultaneous centering and decentering, …

Baseball Milestones: Barry, Alex, And Tom, Richard C. Crepeau
Baseball Milestones: Barry, Alex, And Tom, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Over two weeks ago before taking a short vacation to escape the heat and humidity of Florida, I saw the Barry Bonds home run that tied Henry Aaron. That same day Alex Rodriguez hit his 500th home run and all those fans with steroid anxiety suddenly discovered a new hero. Even before Bonds had officially passed Aaron, A-Rod became the Great Clean Hope who would surpass "Mr. Bonds," as Bud Selig so warmly called him, and bring the home run crown back to the kind of people who hold it by divine fiat. The next day Tom Glavine won his …

The Moslem World: A History Of America’S Earliest Islamic Newspaper And Its Successors, Brent D. Singleton
The Moslem World: A History Of America’S Earliest Islamic Newspaper And Its Successors, Brent D. Singleton
Library Faculty Publications & Presentations
In the spring of 1893, The Moslem World debuted as America's first Islamic publication. The paper was to be the centerpiece in Mohammed Alexander Russell Webb's Indian backed American Islamic Propaganda mission to the United States. Despite near unanimous praise from critics with regard to the printing quality of the paper, there was a mixed reaction to the paper's contents and Webb's scheme in general. The paper was only published for seven issues before financial shortfalls from India doomed the ambitious publication. As well, internal strife within Webb's movement hampered efforts to regain the necessary funding to carry on publication …
