Archive And Repertoire Of The Esala Perahera Performance In Sri Lanka, Hashintha Jayasinghe
Archive And Repertoire Of The Esala Perahera Performance In Sri Lanka, Hashintha Jayasinghe
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This project examines the archive and the repertoire of the Esala Perahera in Sri Lanka and charts the ideological and cultural implications of the performance. The archival analysis begins with the interrogation of the historical chronicles and the recorded history of the performance in the Sinhala and English texts. Thereafter, travel literature and the dissemination of cultural knowledge on the Perahera are discussed. The study of the repertoire and the photographic archive explores key performances in the Esala Perahera in 2016 and 2017. Postcolonial theory, theories on cultural anthropology, and performance theory are used to analyze the archive and the …
Program, Policy, And Culture Factors Minority Millennials Perceive As Important Within Their Workplace For Retention, Tanesha C. Watts
Program, Policy, And Culture Factors Minority Millennials Perceive As Important Within Their Workplace For Retention, Tanesha C. Watts
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Millennials make up the largest segment of the current workforce. However, research about minority Millennials and their needs are relatively unknown. The purpose of this study was to find out what minority Millennials deemed important within an organization’s culture and the policies and programs that would persuade them to remain with the company. Purposeful sampling was used to identify participants for this study. Participants met the criterion of a Millennial by age, identified as a minority, currently worked at an organization with 50 or more employees in an office location and had worked for their current employer for one year …

Effects Of Social Media On Self-Image Of Emerging Adults, Floyd M. Curry Jr.
Effects Of Social Media On Self-Image Of Emerging Adults, Floyd M. Curry Jr.
Psychology Summer Fellows
This project extends previous research on social media and self-image and focuses on the developmental phase of emerging adulthood. We measured individuals’ reports of feeling of being in the emerging adult developmental period, their self-concept clarity and ethnic identity, and their use of social media for self-presentation and comparison with others. An online questionnaire was administered to participants who were in the age group of emerging adulthood (18-25 years). Results indicate that those who were in strong agreement that this was a time of experimentation and that this was a time of feeling “in-between” had greater clarity about their self-concept; …

Sex, Labor, And Digital Spaces: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Gpguiadelas, A Brazilian Sex Worker Twitter Feed, Ailesha L. Ringer
Communication ETDs
This dissertation project is a critical discourse analysis of written and visual texts produced for GPGuiaDelas, a Brazilian sex worker Twitter feed. Drawing on digital labor studies, feminist studies on sex work, and Brazilian studies on race and gender, 176 Twitter conversations between sex workers and clients were analyzed in order to answer the following: (1) What are the dominant themes in the discourse about sex work constructed through microblogging on social media?; (2) What are the discursive practices of sex workers who use social media as a platform?; and (3) What theoretical insights emerge from the analysis of sex …

Toward A Theory Of Procedural Rhetorical Systems: Demonstrations Of Player Agency In Uptake Of Rules In Video Games, Sydney A. Klem
Toward A Theory Of Procedural Rhetorical Systems: Demonstrations Of Player Agency In Uptake Of Rules In Video Games, Sydney A. Klem
Theses and Dissertations
This paper expands Ian Bogost’s (2007) procedural rhetoric by broadening the rhetorical view of games to encompass the arguments that they make not just about the material, but about themselves. The theory of procedural rhetorical systems (PRSes) views game systems as arguing toward how players should be following their rules, and like in any form of rhetoric, players possess agency in how they take up these arguments and how closely they follow rules. To demonstrate this, this paper analyzes a specific game, the 1996 platformer Super Mario 64, alongside various digital artifacts demonstrating how players have taken it up, including …
West Virginia’S Sugary Drink Tax: Examining Print Media Frames In Local News Sources, Lauri Andress, Ogaga Urhie, Christine Compton
West Virginia’S Sugary Drink Tax: Examining Print Media Frames In Local News Sources, Lauri Andress, Ogaga Urhie, Christine Compton
Journal of Appalachian Health
Introduction: Framing is an important aspect of the policy process that helps the public and decision makers sort through and resolve highly charged claims about an issue. Through slight changes in the presentation of issues, a framing effect may alter public support. The way a proposed sugary drink tax is discussed in public discourse and by the media significantly influences policy acceptance. Given the public health significance of obesity and diabetes in West Virginia (WV) the study of media frames employed to represent a sugary drink tax policy is useful.
Methods: Using quantitative content analysis, this study assessed news articles—published …

Things Cis People Say: Mechanisms Of Moral Disengagement In The Justification Of Anti-Queer Communication, Jonathan M. Sahlman
Things Cis People Say: Mechanisms Of Moral Disengagement In The Justification Of Anti-Queer Communication, Jonathan M. Sahlman
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Despite advances gained by LGBTQIA+ people the issue of discrimination against the queer population continues. Recent events surrounding comments made by alt-right leaders have continued the conversation regarding homophobia and transphobia. The followed study built on previous understandings of moral disengagement theory and communication. 15 semi-structured, in-depth interviews with queer students were conducted in order to explore the role of self-cognitive mechanisms and their potential justifications for anti-queer communication. Findings suggested that not only were mechanisms of moral disengagement present in incidents surrounding anti-queer communication, but the carried with them a range of personal and societal implications. This study offered …

Rhetorical Agency In Algorithm-Centered Digital Activity: Methods For Tracing Agency In Online Research, Daniel L. Hocutt
Rhetorical Agency In Algorithm-Centered Digital Activity: Methods For Tracing Agency In Online Research, Daniel L. Hocutt
English Theses & Dissertations
Contemporary scholars in rhetoric studies and technical communication have theorized rhetorical agency as engaging human and nonhuman actors in online spaces. One such space, where the work of scholarship, teaching, and technical communication practice intersect, is online research. In online research interfaces, scholars and students alike conduct research; scholars teach and students learn the online research process toward contributing knowledge; and technical communicators design and test meaningful user experiences in these interfaces.
However, the field offers few comprehensive methodologies for studying the emergence of rhetorical agency in online search environments, where the activities of technologies, humans, corporations, and environments coalesce. …
The #Metoo Movement And Its’ Impact In Pakistan, Noor Usman Rafi
The #Metoo Movement And Its’ Impact In Pakistan, Noor Usman Rafi
MSJ Capstone Projects
The MeToo movement, albeit a social media tool, has practically worked in favor of women empowerment. All the women speaking out against Harvey Weinstein and big Hollywood producers stepping down had a tremendous moral impact on the movement. This gave it so much force and impetus that it translated into a similar trend in India and Pakistan.
Women empowerment and sexual harassment are being discussed regularly in news media in Pakistan. Because of the ripple effect of the hashtag MeToo, victims and sufferers who spoke up have been vital enough to spark this debate. The taboo and silence of ‘being …

Media Discourses That Normalize Colonial Relations: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of (Im)Migrants And Refugees, Meng Zhao, Jorge Rodriguez, Lilia D. Monzó
Education Faculty Articles and Research
The im(migration) and refugee crisis that are being exacerbated under the Trump administration, is a manifestation of empire-building and the long history of colonization of the Global South. A Marxist-humanist perspective recognizes these as consistent aspects of a clearly racist global capitalism that functions in the interest of multibillion dollar U.S.–based corporations and increasingly transnational corporations. Trade agreements, international economic policy, political intervention, invasion or the threat of these, often secure corporate interests in specific countries and regions. The authors use critical discourse analysis to examine the discourses around Mexican, Central American, and Syrian im(migrants) and refugees as examples of …
The Fear And Biopolitical Control Of The ‘Terrorist Other’, Percy Percy Sherwood
The Fear And Biopolitical Control Of The ‘Terrorist Other’, Percy Percy Sherwood
Western Research Forum
“I think Islam hates us,” Donald Trump said as a presidential candidate in a CNN interview in March 2016, conflating the religion with ‘radical Islamic terrorism.’ Trump’s statement exemplifies the prevailing fabricated enemy and resulting Islamophobia in the context of the ‘global war on terror.’ Since 9/11, powerful actors are using abstractions, ideologies, and narratives—that are usually defined along racial lines—to conjure up a fear so permeable that it serves to legitimize massive levels of violence in the name of self-righteousness. How do the racist abstractions, ideologies, and narratives that are associated with Islam and Muslims produce fear and insecurity …

Politique, Onomastique Et Doublage Audiovisuel : De Quoi L’Anthroponyme Est-Il Le Nom ?, Frédérique Brisset
Al-Kīmiyā
Within lexicology, onomastics considers proper names, which are supposed to be unique lexical markers. One of their characteristics, according to linguists, is their untranslatability. Nevertheless, translation provides relevant tools for onomastics researchers. Comparative approaches, as they question the concept of the signifiers' referents for the target readers or listeners, ask for reflections on the essential meaning of proper names, their translation often revealing connotations well beyond the original marker. Thus, political anthroponyms prove very interesting: etymologically, politics imply a territorial setting. In movies, which picture a realistic world, a make-believe, the setting can be difficult to grasp if films are …

Percezione E Ruolo Delle Lingue Straniere E Dell’Arabo Standard In Alcune Commedie Di Ziad Rahbani, Giuseppe Emanuele Ventura
Al-Kīmiyā
This paper aims at analysing various passages from some of the most famous comedies by Lebanese playwright Ziad Rahbani, characterized by the use of different languages, language varieties and Modern Standard Arabic mixed with Lebanese Arabic. All of these extracts have been transcribed and translated into Italian, so that a linguistic analysis and review about peculiar leitmotivs of Ziad's comedies can be outlined. Furthermore, this analysis has turned out to be useful in order to highlight the value, the importance and the effects of the above-mentioned elements within the comedies. It proves the relationship between the use of language and …
D’Imaginaire En Imaginaire, James Archibald
D’Imaginaire En Imaginaire, James Archibald
Al-Kīmiyā
The American novelist Sinclair Lewis published It Can't Happen Here in 1935; this work of political fiction was then translated into French by Raymond Queneau and appeared two years later under the title Impossible ici. The source text reveals an imagined American here whereas the imagined xenophobic and racist world translated as ici served as a reminder of the reality of pre-war Europe. Readers of target-oriented translations benefit from translators' life experiences. Those same readers, who are often fond of foreignized translations, can also regret the intentional dissimulation of the source language-culture, because they love alterity as well. In …

Effective Teaching, Effective Learning, Tacla Feghali Abi Samra
Al-Kīmiyā
This article examines how effective teaching leads to effective learning, especially in foreign language teaching and particularly in teaching English. Effective language teaching does not only depend on language proficiency but also on other specific characteristics of effective teachers whether native or non-native. Firstly, the article tackles the personal qualities of the teachers, which include motivation, intelligence, especially offering feedback and being adaptable; and self-care by taking care of themselves and overcoming burnout. Secondly, it refers to the professional qualifications of the teachers, which encompass professional development and self-reflection, knowledge of subject-matter, classroom management skills, and student-centered teaching. It also …

إعادة الترجمة أو الثبات الممنوع, Nour Nasrani
Al-Kīmiyā
This article deals with retranslation, its causes and characteristics. The analysis is illustrated by an English text taken from the "Prophet" (a book by Gibran Kahlil Gibran) translated into Arabic several times. Five different translations will be studied. This book was chosen because the writer approved the first translation. Why was it retranslated then? Some of the translators, in their introduction, justified their new approach and all of them agreed that the older versions were not faithful to Gibran's spirit and had some major errors. The article further discusses the different versions in Arabic while trying to define the concept …

Nouveauté Et Productivité Lexicale : Le Cas Des « Phrasal Verbs », Emilie Riguel
Al-Kīmiyā
Phrasal verbs are probably the most common and representative constructions of all the multi-word expressions in English. Indeed, suffice it to see the large number of existing phrasal verbs, not to mention that new ones are constantly coined, which shows they are a very productive and perpetually evolving class. This article aims to draw up a brief typology of neological phrasal verbs and to provide examples of the most relevant contemporary phrasal verbs in terms of lexical innovation.

As the translation process is a mental one, subject to cognitive processes, the article aims to study the effect of the attention as a cognitive factor in the translation process. After defining the concept of attention and its forms, the study proposes, in the first stage, a design that would explain how the translator manages his attention resources. The article presents in a second stage, an empirical study which aimed to explore the effect of distraction in the translated output and thus in making mistakes. The study adopted a mixed research methodology, quantitative and qualitative. The results showed an increase …

Solanum Plastisexum, An Enigmatic New Bush Tomato From The Australian Monsoon Tropics Exhibiting Breeding System Fluidity., Angela J. Mcdonnell, Heather B. Wetreich, Jason T. Cantley, Peter Jobson, Christopher T. Martine
Faculty Journal Articles
A bush tomato that has evaded classification by solanologists for decades has been identified and is described as a new species belonging to the Australian “Solanum dioicum group” of the Ord Victoria Plain biogeographic region in the monsoon tropics of the Northern Territory. Although now recognised to be andromonoecious, S. plastisexum Martine & McDonnell, sp. nov. exhibits multiple reproductive phenotypes, with solitary perfect flowers, a few staminate flowers or with cymes composed of a basal hermaphrodite and an extended rachis of several to many staminate flowers. When in fruit, the distal rachis may abcise and drop. A member of …
