Kings Mountain Baptist Association Minute Books

The 1851 meeting Minutes of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association and Convention of Delegates took place at Double Springs Baptist Church. The introductory sermon was preached by Elder D. Pannel. The convention was called to order by Elder J. Suttle, and on his motion Elder Thomas Dickson was appointed Moderator, and J. R. Logan clerk pro term. Minutes include a copy of the Constitution of The Kings Mountain Association along with Rules of Decorum.

In it he encourages the students to eschew the vanity of earthly pursuits and place their hope and faith on the promise of God's eternal blessings. Thornwell based this sermon on the Scripture Job 14: 10.

Touted as the "first religious newspaper" in North America, the Herald of Gospel Liberty was published by Elias Smith on September 1, 1808 in Massachusetts for the purpose of promoting the restoration of primitive Christianity to the church and for promoting religious liberty from government and ecclesiastical control. Smith was among a growing number of New England clergy who were promoting a return to primitive Christianity as a result of the Second Great Awakening in America. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), was a German writer associated with the Sturm and Drang (Storm and Stress) literary movement. Faust 1 (1806) has Mephistopheles, a minion for the devil, seduce Faust into selling his soul to the devil. Faust, in turn, seduces a young woman, ultimately destroying her. In Faust 2 (1831), Faust goes on a series of adventures, meets some fairies, and finally atones for some of his sins and is able to enter Heaven.
