Who Are You And What Do You Want? (Wheaton, Il), C. William Pollard

C. William Pollard Papers

Speaking at a Wheaton College chapel service, Pollard addresses the question of vocation. Rather than simply being synonymous with 'career,' he contends that vocation is the specific way one is called to actualize faith in daily life.

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

CHRISTIAN MICHENER explores Susan Straight's likening of the black experience in America to an underwater dancer so focused on survival as to remain as dry as the chief setting for most of the stories in the Aquaboogie collection, Rio Seco. A doctoral student in Literature and Creative Writing at the University of Missouri-Columbia, Michener is here publishing his first scholarly work

Arguing that 'patriarchy' fails to reveal the tradition in American literature of male identity, power, and purpose, MICHAEL S. ALLEN examines the role of male bonding and traces it to the early threat of violence each young male faces, …

Hypertext And Electronic Publishing In Nonprofit Organization, Voluntary Action And Philanthropy Studies, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Computer networking is making it possible to think about completely new ways of organizing and contributing to knowledge in scholarly disciplines. One of these new ways is hypertext, which still lacks a general model or metaphor, but which generally involves electronic links between different texts. This paper proposes an applied model of hypertext termed TESH (Traditional-Established Scholarly Hypertext). Traditionally, publishing has been viewed as a constitutive activity of scholarly communities of peers who have for more than three centuries exchange communications with one another by letter, memorandum and most importantly, through scholarly, scientific and academic journals. In TESH, an indefinite …

Grant's Contract In Jeopardy- Nfl Loses In Court- Hockey And Baseball Lockouts, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It was just a few short months ago that Pat Williams glibly assured the Orlando public that the signing of Horace Grant to a contract that clearly circumvented the NBA salary cap was not a problem. "We have very clever lawyers," said Williams, "at one glance they can tell the difference between an oral and a written contract." But could they tell the difference between a cap and a strap?

Football Spending In Florida Universities - Pell Grant Fraud Not Only At Miami, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Fall is in the air, if you live 400 miles north of here, and all the color and pageantry of college football has returned, as they say on the TV networks. The Bands have hit the fields, the boosters have opened their wallets, and college presidents are doing what they do best, giving pep talks to their scholar athletes.

Tennis In Decline In The 90'S, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The U.S. Open Tennis Championships began its two-week run in New York on Monday. Most of the big names of the past two decades are gone. On the women's side Martina Navratolova is in semi-retirement, Monica Seles has never come back from the knifing of a year and a half ago, and earlier stars like Chris Everet and Billie Jean King are long since departed. On the men's side Jimmy Connors, the long-time mainstay of New York bad-manners-tennis has packed it in, while the great McEnroe-Connors, and McEnroe-Borg rivalries are history while Johnny Mac is now doing TV commentary.

The Servant Leader, C. William Pollard

C. William Pollard Papers

In this speech to the Young Executives Club of Chicago (Palmer House-Chicago, IL), Pollard outlines his vision of servant leadership, which he believes is the answer to the problems posed by a rapidly changing economy and an increasingly amoral culture. This particular version includes Pollard's handwritten edits.

Grant Contract - New Coach? - Baseball Hof, Richard C. Crepeau Aug 1994

Grant Contract - New Coach? - Baseball Hof, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

For the Orlando Magic it looked like the biggest development since the signing of the Shaq. To be able to pick up Horace Grant as a free agent without giving up Dennis Scott on waivers, and only losing Scott Skiles and a first round pick in 1996 is truly amazing. John Gabriel, or whoever engineered this deal, seemed on the way to canonization, having performed a certifiable miracle.

Sports Are Different Here - An American In Europe During World Cup, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It's odd when you leave the United States and go off for a vacation and have very little contact with the sports scene for over three weeks. Baseball, which is a daily obsession nearly disappears from your life, with only an occasional glimpse at scores in the international Herald Tribune or USA Today, and a few highlights hear and there on CNN.
