Si Swimsuit Edition - Major Nba Trade - Figure Skating - Brian Hill Fired, Richard C. Crepeau Feb 1997

Si Swimsuit Edition - Major Nba Trade - Figure Skating - Brian Hill Fired, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It is mid-February, just past mid-winter in those regions to our north. It is the shortest month, while at the same time the longest month for those caught in winter. On the sports calendar it is the time between, when the Super Bowl is over and we await the NCAA Road to Wherever to be followed by the NBA and NHL playoffs. Nothing much is happening.

Baseball Commissioner, Richard C. Crepeau Feb 1997

Baseball Commissioner, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Acting Baseball Commissioner for Life Bud Selig is currently making noises suggesting that it's time to choose a permanent Commissioner and that he doesn't want the job. I do, and I offer the following manifesto as my application for the position.

Dennis Rodman, Richard C. Crepeau Feb 1997

Dennis Rodman, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Once upon a time he was the scourge of the NBA. He skipped practices and road trips; head-butted two players and then a referee; threw a bag of ice at his coach in San Antonio; used profanity in a live post-game interview; and kicked a television cameraman in the groin at a game in the Target Center. All of this earned him 24 games in suspensions, a suspension from one playoff series, and one indefinite suspension, $67,000 in fines, and millions in lost wages.

Super Bowl Excesses, Richard C. Crepeau Jan 1997

Super Bowl Excesses, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

There is always one little item that catches the eye; the one that both embodies and summarizes the excess. This year for me it is the Little Penny Commercial. Here in Fantasyland they have been touting the making of this little obscenity of American excess for the past several weeks. Celebrities have been rolling in and out of town, in and out of their limos and private jets, to be seen in this year's breathlessly awaited Super Bowl commercial. The parties have been numerous, the celebrity watching prime, and the press coverage worthy of the outbreak of World War III.

Coaching And The Abuse Of Authority, Richard C. Crepeau Jan 1997

Coaching And The Abuse Of Authority, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The breakdown of authority is often cited as a primary cause of the disorders and maladies of society. The loss of respect for authority is seen as a major problem among the young. Many of the symbols of authority have lost their luster and seem no longer capable of evoking deference.

Super Bowl Xxxi, Richard C. Crepeau Jan 1997

Super Bowl Xxxi, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

If the Carolina Panthers and the Jacksonville Jaguars meet in Super Bowl XXXI Pete Rozelle will come back to present the trophy. He will do so not only to symbolize the extraterrestrial character of the event, but also to symbolize how deeply Rozelle's legacy of parity has become ingrained into the fabric of the National Football League.

Photos: Bartenders & Cocktails 1940s-90s Period - Ireland, James Murphy

Other resources

Bartenders Association of Ireland – A History book (1997) captured the many social and professional practice events, awards, new drinks and hotels services launched, significant bar and cocktail industry people and their contributions plus the many community activities which the bartenders and members of the Bartenders Association of Ireland (BAI) have successfully completed from the 1940s up to the late 1990s. The successful completion of these activities would not be been possible without the active and on-going support of the many Irish and international drinks and hospitality establishments (association supporters) and the association’s membership and active support of initially the …

“We Have Raffeled For The Elephant & Won!”: The Wool Industry At South Union, Kentucky, Donna C. Parker, Jonathan J. Jeffrey Jan 1997

“We Have Raffeled For The Elephant & Won!”: The Wool Industry At South Union, Kentucky, Donna C. Parker, Jonathan J. Jeffrey

SCL Faculty and Staff Publications

Wool, next to cotton, is perhaps the most important of all textile fibers. Like most of their contemporaries, the Shakers of South Union, Kentucky, recognized the ease with which wool fibers were spun into yarn and the advantages of sturdy wool clothing. South Union’s textile industry grew from a simple carding mill to a full-fledged woolen factory with a 240-spindle spinning jack and 4 power looms. From its genesis in 1815 to its abrupt demised in 1868, the sect’s woolen industry provides a paradigm for the study of the United States’ textile industrialization.

Women And Leadership Working Paper Series: Paper No. 12: Career Barriers And The Older Woman Manager, Leonie V. Still, Wendy Timms Jan 1997

Women And Leadership Working Paper Series: Paper No. 12: Career Barriers And The Older Woman Manager, Leonie V. Still, Wendy Timms

Research outputs pre 2011

The removal of the age retirement barrier has led to expectations that more and more older workers will remain in the workforce past the usual retirement age of 65. Women make up an increasing proportion of older workers, and Patrickson and Hartmann ( 1996) have shown that Australian women are planning not to retire in order to improve their retirement income.

An important section of the older workers group are the managerial and professional women, aged in their 50s, who are part of the first generation of women to have long-term careers like men i.e. full-time careers extending over 25 …

Women And Leadership Working Paper Series: Paper No. 11: The Employment Status Of Women In The Australian Finance Industry, Leonie V. Still

Research outputs pre 2011

The finance industry is the seventh largest employer of women in Australia !Australian Bureau of Statistics, Labour Force Australia, 1996, p46). Yet despite its importance to women as a source of employment, no major review of the general overall employment status of women in the industry has occurred. Instead, research has concentrated on particular aspects of the sector - for example, part-time employment in banking !Alexander & Frank, 1990; Manning, 1990; Britt, 1995; Junor, Barlow & Patterson, 1993, 1994)...

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

DONALD WAYNE VINEY offers convincing examples that far from being the dour, unsmiling figure often presented of Christ, He exhibited a full range of emotions, including humor upon occasion. Associate Professor of Philosophy at Pittsburg State University, Viney is author of Charles Hartshorne and the Existence of God (1985), A Philosopher Looks at the Bible (1992), and several articles in the philosophy of religion and metaphysics. He is also a member of Midwest Quarterly's Board of Editors.

Pete Roselle, Richard C. Crepeau Dec 1996

Pete Roselle, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Some called him the Pope of the National Football League. Others saw him as a minor deity of the mid-twentieth century's religious devotion to sport. Whatever the perspective, it is clear that Alvin "Pete" Rozelle is among the most significant figures in the history of Sport in America and the world in the Twentieth Century.

Jerry Reinsdorf's Smoking Gun And Baseball Labor Settlement, Richard C. Crepeau Dec 1996

Jerry Reinsdorf's Smoking Gun And Baseball Labor Settlement, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

They called him The Old Roman. In 1919 Charles Comiskey, owner of the Chicago White Sox so angered his players with low salaries and his cheapskate ways that they turned on him and fixed the World Series. In 1996 White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf so angered his fellow owners by his high salaries and wild spending that they turned on him, reversed their vote of the previous three weeks, and approved the new baseball collective bargaining agreement. Maybe they should call Reinsdorf, the New Roman, or Roman Nouveau.
