THIS FIRST NUMBER of the ninth volume of THE MIDWEST QUARTERLY begins a new year with-somewhat to her surprise- a somewhat new editor. During a summer leave or a sabbatical absence of Professor Cornish, it is true, she has sometimes stepped in, has chewed pencils, checked copy, struggled with an engulfing correspondence, written forewords and afterwords, read proof, worried with subscriptions and copyright and the multifarious details involved in any publication, and all the while has rejoiced rather too audibly in the prospect of a speedy release. The Everett Massacre serves not only as an example of harassment of organized labor but also as an example of the violence which typified the I. W.W. movement in its attempt to win concessions from an unwilling industry. In order to understand the historical significance of this event and to place it in perspective, it is necessary to understand the growth of the I. W.W. philosophy beginning with the Western Federation of Miners and the creation of the I. W.W. In addition, two incidents serve to illustrate the mental atmosphere in which the I. INDULGING natural preference and at the same time bowing to a tradition still green, the editors present their fifth Summer Literary Number. Their six major selections draw from at least three diverse literary streams: Nineteenth-century English (early and late), nineteenth-century American, and the contemporary American novel.
