Types Of Student Translation Errors In English-Indonesian Translation, Haru Deliana Dewi, Andika Wijaya
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
This research focuses on translation and language errors discovered in English-Indonesian translation results. This study aims to investigate the types of errors mostly made by Indonesian novice translators. The data were obtained from translation practice assigned to undergraduate students, who were taking the compulsory basic translation course. The respondents, who were native Indonesian speakers, were asked to translate two paragraphs from a given text in class for one hour and send their translations to the raters via email. The raters then marked the errors in the students’ translations using the 2021 ATA’s Standardized Framework for Error Marking. The results of …

Polemik Catra Pada Stupa Induk Candi Borobudur: Kajian Arkeologi Dan Filosofis, So Tju Shinta Lee, Salim Lee
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
This paper explores the profound meaning of the main stupa at Candi Borobudur and analyzes the implications of the proposed catra installation on the monument’s spiritual and cultural values. The interpretation is based on a post-processual perspective that emphasizes the importance of considering context, internal evidence, and internal symbolic relationships rather than seeking externally sourced validation. Through a combination of literature study, observation, and comparative analysis of stupas at Borobudur itself, contemporary Buddhist candis in Central Java, and various types of stupas abroad, this research concludes that the proposal for catra installation on the main stupa of Borobudur lacks …

Arah Baru Politik Kewargaan Etnis Tionghoa Di Indonesia (Studi Kasus Jakarta & Manado), Wasisto Raharjo Jati, Almunauwar Rusli, Rukmana Gonibala, Hendri Gunawan
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
The new direction of ethnic Chinese citizenship politics in Indonesia is marked by a communal revival in non-governmental organizations, media and schools. The past of ethnic Chinese in Indonesia is indeed full of crises, but the future of Chinese citizens in Indonesia really depends on the policies of each ruling regime towards their group. The new direction of ethnic Chinese citizenship politics in Indonesia must be understood as a process of psychological rehabilitation for sentiment and antipathy towards China in the past. The interpretation of social reality and the social movements they carry out on a local scale should be …

Neuroarts And Neuroaesthetics, James Hutson, Piper Hutson
Neuroarts And Neuroaesthetics, James Hutson, Piper Hutson
Faculty Scholarship
Recent advancements in neuroarts and neuroaesthetics have elucidated the relationship between artistic engagement and neural processes, emphasizing the impact of aesthetic experiences on cognitive and emotional well-being. Central to this exploration is the NeuroArts Blueprint initiative, which consolidates interdisciplinary research to better understand the impactful role of the arts on brain function and health outcomes. Empirical studies highlight how exposure to art, such as music or visual stimuli, activates neural circuits involved in emotion regulation, memory, and reward processing, particularly engaging the medial orbitofrontal cortex. Innovations such as haptic and electro-tactile devices have introduced novel sensory modalities that not only …
A Different Way To Hear: The Role Of Children’S Literature In Promoting Asl And Deaf Awareness, Joslyn Harrington
A Different Way To Hear: The Role Of Children’S Literature In Promoting Asl And Deaf Awareness, Joslyn Harrington
Honors Projects
A Different Way to Hear is a 32-page children’s storybook project designed to promote early exposure to American Sign Language (ASL) and foster cultural awareness of Deaf identity. The story follows a hearing child who, through friendship with a Deaf peer, learns to experience the world through senses beyond sound. Inspired by research on ASL acquisition, Deaf Studies, and inclusive education practices, the book naturally integrates ASL into the narrative and illustrations to model visual communication strategies for young readers. This project responds to a lack of children’s literature that authentically portrays Deaf characters outside of deficit-based narratives. Through careful …
Drawing Conclusions: A Study On Student Comic Creation As A Formative Assessment, Madeline Wright
Drawing Conclusions: A Study On Student Comic Creation As A Formative Assessment, Madeline Wright
Honors Projects
This study explores the effectiveness of comics as an exit ticket to help improve student learning and achievement. Students today are struggling with grasping social studies concepts, and this study seeks to look into the researcher’s creative solution to this issue. While extensive research highlights the effectiveness of comics as an instructional tool, little research has been done on its effectiveness as an assessment tool. The hypothesis of the study is that if students create comics as an exit ticket, then their perceived understanding and engagement in the content will improve. Data was collected by student drawn comic panels/sheets, observations, …
The Icarian Dilemma: The Battle Of Faith Versus Identity Addressed With Scenic Design, Allistar G. Barrett
The Icarian Dilemma: The Battle Of Faith Versus Identity Addressed With Scenic Design, Allistar G. Barrett
Senior Honors Theses
American Christians and the LGBTQ+ community have long been in a cultural war with one another. However, queer Christians – individuals who are both LGBTQ+ and Christian – have rarely found solace in either community, instead being shunned and ostracized for their beliefs and identities. Using the transformative art of theatre to address cultural divides, a theatrical scenic design was developed for Joe Calarco’s Shakespeare’s R & J, a retelling of the traditional Romeo and Juliet script through the lives of four Catholic school girls. This design uses the Greek mythology of Icarus, Catholic culture, the original Romeo and Juliet, …
Fashion And Film: The Art Of Costume Design, Abigail C. Stalder
Fashion And Film: The Art Of Costume Design, Abigail C. Stalder
Senior Honors Theses
A costume designer’s job is to create wardrobes that fit the film’s aesthetic, context, and personality of each character. Costume designers take inspiration from trends, incorporating them into their work through their own creative process, inspiring fashion designers and trend-setters to implement the styles in new ways. Thus, producing an endless cycle — an ecosystem wherein both fashion and film thrive off each other, continuously evolving to create beauty on and off the screen. Aligning my creativity and knowledge of both fashion and film, I participated in the making of six student films, costuming over 30 named characters as well …
Creative Ties: Using Design To Build Connections And Reduce Loneliness, Madelyn Arnold
Creative Ties: Using Design To Build Connections And Reduce Loneliness, Madelyn Arnold
Honors Projects
While loneliness is a universal infliction, there are specific demographics that are disproportionately affected by this experience. The older adult population is at a much higher risk of experiencing feelings of loneliness and the negative health risks that come from extended periods of isolation. The severity of loneliness within the older adult population cannot be overstated. Art therapy techniques have been studied as a potential tool to reduce these feelings and side effects in this vulnerable population.
Moved by the profound effects and high rates of loneliness for older adults, this project seeks to create a tool to alleviate these …

Drag Attack, Chase Jones
Drag Attack, Chase Jones
College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations
Drag Attack is a single-player beat 'em up game built for PC. Players take on the role of Chicago drag artist Molly Jolly Christmas, as she fights to stop the evil president Billy the Bigot from passing HB69, a bill that will ban drag once and for all. With mechanics inspired by classic games in the genre, and the addition of drag-inspired actions like purse smacking and gown spinning, the game provides a cathartic outlet for queer gamers who are ready to fight back against hateful rhetoric and legislature. Enemies are based on proponents of anti-drag legislation, such as conservative-leaning …

Threaded Locations: Sustainable Custom Hoodie Brand, Kaylee E. Olson
Research & Creative Achievement Day
For my Senior Capstone project for the Art and Design Department, I created a clothing brand called Threaded Locations. The Brand's mission was to merge sustainability with personal memories, offering people a unique way to cherish meaningful places. The concept behind Threaded Locations is to connect the stories behind places in people's lives with custom embroidered designs.
People often have emotional attachments to certain places, whether that is the neighborhood in which they grew up or a beloved vacation spot. With Threaded locations, the goal was to give people an opportunity to carry a piece of those memories with them …

Alien Out is a space-themed pop-up board game where players complete mini challenges on different planets to help lost aliens return home, offering multiple ways to play: solo, competitive, or team-based. The goal is to create a versatile gameplay experience that accommodates different player dynamics, ensuring that individuals, small groups, or larger teams can engage with the game without limitations. The concept is inspired by a love for astronomy and a desire to incorporate interactive pop-up elements into board game design. By combining these elements, Alien Out aims to provide an immersive, strategic, and visually dynamic experience.

Operation Dumbass, Kyurim Oh, Luke W. Krzyszkowski
Research & Creative Achievement Day
Operation Dumbass is a stylized multiplayer social deception game developed by Kyurim Oh and Luke Krzyszkowski as part of their Advanced Design Project at Winona State University. Inspired by the absurdity and charm of viral games like Fall Guys and the immersive environments of Super Mario Odyssey, the game was born from our shared frustration with limited party sizes in current multiplayer games—and a desire to make something we would genuinely love to play. The game is set in a lively city full of AI-controlled citizens, where up to 16 players take on the role of spies disguised as ordinary …

Research & Creative Achievement Day
AI generated imagery is now everywhere and accessible to almost everyone… for better or for worse. There are many artists worldwide who have been using artificial intelligence / machine learning for years to create fascinating, research or experimentally driven art. There are also many artists who are using AI simply as a tool, and there is a long history of artists using tools to help them work more efficiently (camera lucida, photography, Photoshop, etc). Conversely, many artists are concerned about the use of their original artwork being scraped without their permission to train these bots, and artists whose jobs have …

The NerveX fidget toy is a modern and stylish alternative to traditional fidget toys, designed especially for adults. Many fidget toys are made for children, which can make them feel out of place in professional or social settings. NerveX solves this problem by offering a discreet and effective way to manage stress, anxiety, and conditions like ADHD and OCD.
One of the key features of NerveX is its smooth, endless spinning motion. This repetitive movement helps people with ADHD stay focused and engaged in tasks. It can also provide comfort for individuals with OCD by giving them a calming action …
Swell: A Sustainable Surf Brand, Simon J. Pell
Swell: A Sustainable Surf Brand, Simon J. Pell
Research & Creative Achievement Day
Most boards in the surfing community that are made for performance are made with non-sustainable materials. Many boards use resin that is harmful to the environment through its curing and sanding process as it releases harmful chemicals into the air. They also use foams that release harmful chemicals into the air when they are produced, and they also do not break down when the board is disposed of. Overall, surfboards when produced using resin and foam are harmful for the environment from start to finish.
In the project, I will first do my research to find alternatives to the harmful …
Scrappie Jackie, Meghan E. Cooper
Scrappie Jackie, Meghan E. Cooper
Research & Creative Achievement Day
Scrappie Jackie is my senior capstone project where I take thrifted fabrics and transform them into unique, one-of-a-kind garments. I started this journey with no prior sewing experience, but through trial, error, and plenty of learning, I've developed a process that allows me to give new life to old clothing.
The core idea behind Scrappie Jackie is simple: I use donated clothing to create something new. This process promotes sustainability by upcycling fabrics that would otherwise go to waste, instead of contributing to the fast fashion cycle. The beauty of this project is in the transformation—each piece of clothing holds …
Efficiency Versus Quality: A Reflection On Making A Children’S Book, Elizabeth Diehl
Efficiency Versus Quality: A Reflection On Making A Children’S Book, Elizabeth Diehl
Honors Projects
When first looking at a children’s book, it appears to be a simple creative project. However, when one finds out the components that go into making one, it becomes clear that simplicity is deceiving. Research, ideation, rough drafts, and scripts are just a few of the necessary components for the finished product, and each one of these components can take multiple days or weeks to complete. This essay is a reflection on my experience of creating a picture book in one semester as I attempt to answer the questions “What if the most efficient process for creating a children's picture …
