Larry Bell- Major Works In Glass, Donald Bartlett Doe Jan 1983

Larry Bell- Major Works In Glass, Donald Bartlett Doe

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

For years, the elusive qualities of Larry Bell's work have been challenging the descriptive abilities of critical writers. Here, for example, is Janet Kutner, writing in ARTS in January, 1976, about Bell's largest work, The Iceberg and Its Shadow:

The zigzag configuration of flat and peaked tips related visually to an iceberg's form and, additionally, lines and planes converged at unexpected points to create strange "apparitions" like the tips of icebergs ....

And this is Christopher Knight, writing in the June 14, 1981 Los Angeles Herald Examiner:

The translucent portions of the glass yield the sense of an …

Chartes: An Artistic Representation Of The Scholastic Solution, Dorelle Raab-Peters Jan 1983

Chartes: An Artistic Representation Of The Scholastic Solution, Dorelle Raab-Peters

Whittier Scholars Program

Chartres Cathedral is a work of art which- although it is already almost eight hundred years old- is very important to us. From the cathedral we can learn much about the world and our perception of it. We, in the modern world, have a very one-sided view of the world- we view it from a very scientific, materialistic standpoint. In Chartres we find a very compelling corrective to our sight. Chartres is a physical expression of the medieval mind- a mind which saw the reality of both reason and faith in their lives. The medieval man- who created works such …

Post Object Art And Sociological Influences On The Internal Processes Of Art Making, Steve Havens Jan 1983

Post Object Art And Sociological Influences On The Internal Processes Of Art Making, Steve Havens

Masters Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to discuss how external sociological factors inevitably have a profound effect on current art.

Much great art has been created against the flow of what is critically "popular" or "fashionable," but as these external factors become more prominent so the art work produced inevitably suffers.

The exhibition of Frank Stella's black and aluminum paintings at the turn of the 60's, in my own opinion, provided something of a landmark in the history of art. These works, in all their stark, flat, geometric nakedness denied both "form" and "content." They bare no illusions, no mythology, …

Notes For A Young Potter, Bill Hearst

Theses

The main purpose of this paper is to present what I believe to be important thoughts concerning my activity as a serious artist-potter. It deals with the particular emotions that I have experienced and the philosophies, ideas, and technical aspects that I have investigated while in the Master of Arts program at the Lindenwood Colleges, 1981 - 1983. I dedicate and direct this paper to those interested in seeking a Master of Arts Degree in Pottery because of my interest in teaching and sharing information.

Tillamook Indian Basketry : Continuity And Change As Seen In The Adams Collection, Ailsa Elizabeth Crawford Jan 1983

Tillamook Indian Basketry : Continuity And Change As Seen In The Adams Collection, Ailsa Elizabeth Crawford

Dissertations and Theses

In the Adams Collection at the Tillamook County Pioneer Museum, Tillamook, Oregon, there are 29 baskets that were probably made between 1880 and 1940. They are mostly of raffia, are somewhat faded from their original, bright, commercial colors, and are generally quite small. Despite the fact that these baskets are well-documented and were made by Tillamook women, they are the sort that have been overlooked by anthropologists and by collectors because of their non-"traditional" appearance. In order to determine what relationship these baskets have to Tillamook basketry made earlier, I analyzed them and 39 Tillamook baskets from four other museum …

Dreamworlds And The Art Of Illustration, Donna Crotchett Jan 1983

Dreamworlds And The Art Of Illustration, Donna Crotchett

Masters Theses

While I was growing up, illustrations made deep impressions upon me. An illustration is a picture that explains and adds interest to the written part of a printed work such as a book. Often overlooked by others, for various reasons, this means of communication played a significant part in my life and art.

The history of illustration is a history of men and women, serious artists, who have produced an enormous amount of high-quality work. Many of their illustrations had their origins in fine art such as early religious painting and mythological themes. A large number of fine artists have …
