Image And Meaning In The Floral Borders Of The Hours Of Catherine Of Cleves, Elizabeth R. Schaeffer Jan 1987

Image And Meaning In The Floral Borders Of The Hours Of Catherine Of Cleves, Elizabeth R. Schaeffer

Masters Theses

The Book of Hours of Catherine of Cleves, produced in

the Netherlands c. 1440-45, is one of the most beautiful and

complex illuminated manuscripts of the late Middle Ages.

The Master's originality in his symbolic use of floral

images in the borders of the manuscript is remarkable, yet

little study has been made of this subject. The meaning of

these floral images is, however, important to a complete

understanding of the illumination of the manuscript.

Using a set of criteria based on the tenets of the

Devotie Moderna, a philosophy strong in the Netherlands at

the time, I show that …

A Series Of Twelve Silverprints: Silence And Violence, Dennis Hundley Jan 1987

A Series Of Twelve Silverprints: Silence And Violence, Dennis Hundley

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

SILENCE AND VIOLENCE began as a series of black and white photographs that attempts to depict strong feelings and emotions through the use of lighting, gesture and expression. This is accomplished in three stages: (1) Making the negatives; (2) Making the print; (3) Finishing the print using various processes (bleaching, toning, etc.). My approach combines the use of photographic materials and spontaneous decision making in all three steps to produce prints that are unique. The image making process begins with the production of the negatives. For this series, I wanted a rather spontaneous approach, closer to the working methods I …

Rorschach Erlebnistypus And Problem-Solving Styles In Children, Daniel R. Orme Dec 1986

Rorschach Erlebnistypus And Problem-Solving Styles In Children, Daniel R. Orme

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to determine whether children who, on the basis of their Rorschach Erlebnistypus score, were identified as being introversive or extratensive differed with respect to their approaches to certain novel problem-solving tasks. It was thought that the extratensives would characteristically manipulate the task materials more and make more mistakes than would the introversives, owing to the notion that the introversives internalize more of their manipulations and attempted solutions. Sixty-nine sixth and seventh graders at a university-run laboratory school were administered the Rorschach. From that number fifteen introversive and fifteen extratensive children were identified who were also given …

Abstractions Of Shapes And Space., Rita Ford Jones Dec 1986

Abstractions Of Shapes And Space., Rita Ford Jones

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Abstractions of shape and space is the theme of this thesis. These prints and drawings were created between September, 1984 and October, 1986. Emphasis was placed on developing a body of work which is expressive, spontaneous, and rhythmical.

Intaglio was chosen as a major area of concentration. I experimented with soft-ground etching, hard-ground etching, machine engraving, scraping, burnishing, open bite, sugar lift, aquatint, and with several techniques for color printing. The project also involved a study of various media with the purpose of finding a technique as artistically satisfying as intaglio but less physically demanding to execute. Colored pencils and …

At The Spiritual Grassroots: An Analysis Of Visionary Art & Artists, Ann Taft Nov 1986

At The Spiritual Grassroots: An Analysis Of Visionary Art & Artists, Ann Taft

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In this thesis I focus on an art form alternately described as "naive," "visionary," "environmental," "singular," "individual," or "grassroots." Not easily placed within established academic or popular art categories, such art usually lands by default in the folk art pile and is quickly cast to the peripheries of that genre. In this thesis, I am not concerned with inventing another label for these artists and their work. Instead, I explore the possibility that visionary art may be a separate genre, but one to which folklore analysis may usefully be brought to bear.

Chapter One is a historical and bibliographical analysis …
