The Life And Unusual Ideas Of Adelbert Ames, Jr., Roy R. Behrens Jan 1987

The Life And Unusual Ideas Of Adelbert Ames, Jr., Roy R. Behrens

Faculty Work

This paper is a summary of the life and major achievements of Adelbert Ames, Jr., an American ophthalmologist and perceptual psychologist, who had initially wanted to be a visual artist. He is most widely remembered today as the inventor of the Ames Demonstrations in Perception, the most famous of which consists of a distorted room in which people seem to shrink as they walk from one corner to another. This essay discusses the relationship of the Ames Demonstrations to anamorphic visual art, and it documents various comments by perceptual psychologists and artists who were directly acquainted with Ames.

Woven From The Soul, Spun From The Heart, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

Textiles are luxuries and necessities. They are artifacts as well as primary sources which contain a wealth of information about the society that produced them Materials and color represent products available for textile production; structure gives evidence of levels of technological achievement. Patterns illustrate belief and values, frequently offering insight into daily life. The mingling of motifs expresses a kinship of ideas. Textiles, above all, illustrate a culture's freshness and vitality, its flexibility and adaptation to change.

Meaning and Metaphor: Cultural themes occur in both Persian poetry and the textile arts. Hunting, falconry, bird-and-flower studies were popular subjects for poetry, …

Ideas And Perceptions Of The Australian Landscape, Bill Hawthorn Jan 1987

Ideas And Perceptions Of The Australian Landscape, Bill Hawthorn

Research outputs pre 2011

This book is like an anthology of Australian landscape painting; it brings together for the student a range of works by artists of diverse backgrounds and different levels of commitment to the landscape as a source of imagery and it invites consideration of the paintings from a number of points of view.

The vigorous descriptions of the works together with the interesting black and white illustrations of them will focus the reader's attention on the particular quality of each. Armed with the insights and detail provided a student should find the works more accessible and more intriguing. In other words …

An Album Of Caricature Drawings By Pietro De Rossi, Richard Hemphill Jan 1987

An Album Of Caricature Drawings By Pietro De Rossi, Richard Hemphill

Honors Papers

A leather-bound album in the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung, Munich, is filled with one hundred and twenty caricature drawings. Although reference has often been made to them since their first publication in 1931, and various attempts, largely unsuccessful, have been made to attribute the drawings, they remain little studied and an enigma in the history of the art of caricature in Italy.

First, as I will propose through this study, it is crucial to the understanding of seventeenth-century caricature. Second, on the basis of a very close relationship between the drawings in Munich and a series of prints after designs by …
