The Effect Of Color On Viewers’ Ratings Of Paintings, Donald J. Polzella, Stephanie H. Hammar, Chad W. Hinkle Jan 2005

The Effect Of Color On Viewers’ Ratings Of Paintings, Donald J. Polzella, Stephanie H. Hammar, Chad W. Hinkle

Psychology Faculty Publications

Sixty college students rated digitized facsimiles of 20 paintings on 12 semantic differential scales. The paintings represented two classes of content, landscape and portrait, and two styles, traditional and modern. Half the participants viewed the paintings in color, half in black and white. Removing color from portraits increased their perceived pleasantness and beauty and reduced tension. In contrast, removing color from landscapes reduced their perceived beauty. It is argued that for landscapes color may provide a critical channel for transmitting increased amounts of information such as depth. For portraits, color can be superfluous or even distracting.

Experiencing Music, Michael Alan Gray Jan 2005

Experiencing Music, Michael Alan Gray

Theses and Dissertations

I am exploring the way music alters or enhances the perception of our environment. This creative project allows me to explore and visualize several issues that intrigue me: music (sound), emotion, and visual imagery (film). My goal in developing this topic is to allow others to have an experience related to sound and image, where image is altered and enhanced by the use of music.

Escape Artist, Charles F. Gustina Jan 2005

Escape Artist, Charles F. Gustina

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis reviews the background, influences, and evolution of the body of work entitled Folia, which forms the basis for the candidate's thesis exhibition. It traces the development of the candidate's artistic inclinations from drawing to photography. Directorial and Pictorialist photography are discussed as forebears in the Influences chapter. Evolution of the Body of Work details how the current work grew from both the candidate's background and influences. A Brief Anthology of Quotations references Susan Sontag's influential work, On Photography, with quotations that have either influenced the candidate's work or reflect his perceptions of art and life. The balance of …

Playing To Learn, John Stanko Jan 2005

Playing To Learn, John Stanko

Theses and Dissertations

This creative project explores some major issues about visual communication in digital games. The project will continue to address new questions and invite questions from my visual and communication design colleagues. My hope is that, through this document, designers will see digital games like photography was seen around the turn of the century, and movies in the 1950's and 60's. In other words, as a rich new medium that offers creative people a virtually unexplored environment in which to work and create.

Flight Signs, Flight Symbols, Margaret Mary Urban Jan 2005

Flight Signs, Flight Symbols, Margaret Mary Urban

Theses and Dissertations

I am investigating the significance of historic events of flight through image making; particularly incidents that captured the collective imagination and became part of our cultural memory. These events have surpassed mere entries in historical texts and become mythic. In the terms of Jungian psychology, they have become symbolic. In terms of Semiotics, they have become signs. Through photographs and installation, I seek to understand their presence in my, and our, unconscious mind.

Preface: Sound Scripts: A Word From Tura New Music, Tos Mahoney Jan 2005

Preface: Sound Scripts: A Word From Tura New Music, Tos Mahoney

Sound Scripts

The Inaugural Totally Huge New Music Festival Conference was a bold initiative by its partner presenters Tura New Music and the Faculty of Communications and Creative Industries, Edith Cowan University, Perth, including the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. In an arts milieu which is increasingly becoming “industrialised” and the dollar the bottom line criteria for success, it is reassuring to have the confirmation that there are those—in fact there is a strong cohort—who are dedicated to delving the depths of the meaning of their own and others’ practice.

A “Hidden Centre”: Crossing Cultural Boundaries And Ecstatic Transformation, Liza Lim Jan 2005

A “Hidden Centre”: Crossing Cultural Boundaries And Ecstatic Transformation, Liza Lim

Sound Scripts

The following is an edited version of Liza Lim's keynote lecture presented for the Inaugural Totally Huge New Music Festival Conference (Perth: 8 Oct. 2005). It examines cross-cultural aesthetics and ethical questions arising from non-Indigenous Australian composers interacting with Australian Indigenous cultures. The paper begins in a formal and framed way and then moves towards more personal and speculative comments.

Rice And Celery (Toglen), Domenico De Clario Jan 2005

Rice And Celery (Toglen), Domenico De Clario

Sound Scripts

Berenice is the name of the last of fifty five imaginary cities that Marco Polo describes to Kublai Khan. These descriptions and further dialogues between Marco and the Khan constitute the substance of Italo Calvino's "Invisible Cities". The just in Berenice constitute a secret society, recognizing each other through the pronunciation of certain words (especially commas, parenthesis and the space between things) and through their simple diet of broad beans, zucchini flowers, rice and soup. In recent projects I have been examining the idea that evidence of the existence of a single and independent fixed self cannot seem to be …

Review Of Analogías Musicales: Kandinsky Y Sus Contemporáneos, Antoni Pizà Jan 2005

Review Of Analogías Musicales: Kandinsky Y Sus Contemporáneos, Antoni Pizà

Publications and Research

It is hard to believe that curators and scholars still find something to say about the relationship between music and art of the twentieth century. Still, in recent years there has been a relentless boom of exhibitions, scholarly studies, and books dedicated to this topic. This interest, to be sure, is due, in part, to the prestige that modernist art commands among wealthy collectors and institutions, but also to its immense popularity among the general public. Less popular in appeal, though equally revered among the happy few, is modernist music. When both manifestations – art and music – are brought …

September 28 to December 11, 2005

Introduction

Pierre Daura (American, born Spain, 1896 - 1976) was a member of a radical generation of artists who shaped the development of European modernism from the 1910s to the 1930s. The richness of his art reflects the diverse experiences of his life - growing up in Catalonia, Spain, maturing as an artist in Paris, moving to the small French village of Saint Cirq-Lapopie, participating in the Spanish Civil War, and finally relocating to Rockbridge …

Flinging The Museum Guide Far Outside The Doctrinal Window, Larry M. Taylor Jan 2005

Flinging The Museum Guide Far Outside The Doctrinal Window, Larry M. Taylor

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

It may very well be easier to learn rather than to unlearn. Modes of learning quickly become habit forming; habits tend to become deeply ingrained and die hard. In the visual art world the roles that curator and viewer play can become routine and effectively cloud one's aesthetic vision like so much residue on the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Reorienting the viewer's visual experience and taming the curator's heavy hand are among the aims of Barbara Kendrick and Timothy van Laar in Losing the Instructions, a two person installation at the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery in Lincoln, Nebraska. …

Magic Mountain, Diana Al-Hadid Jan 2005

Magic Mountain, Diana Al-Hadid

Theses and Dissertations

My installations are propositions for an imaginary world that relies on its own internal logic, a world of believability without recognition. While the work references landscape it also emphasizes its contrivance, as it is automatically estranged in an "unnatural" gallery setting. I subvert or de-familiarize the materials and processes that I use in the service of creating a fictitious environment. My places are impossible places. They are irregular, illogical, and unstable. Our imagination can be one of most dangerous things to psychological stability as it is an inventory of all things possible, no matter how irrational or improbable. The irrational …

Global Discontents, Priyadarshini A. Khatri Jan 2005

Global Discontents, Priyadarshini A. Khatri

Theses and Dissertations

My creative project explores toys as means to express economic issues of globalization. By exploiting the educational and imaginative aspects of toys for adults and children, I intend to reflect on the impact and pressures of globalization on employment, technology and environment. In creating these toys I hope to make a visual statement concerning critical issues of human survival, sustainability and the divisive side of globalization.
