The Heart Of Happy Hollow, Paul Laurence Dunbar
The Heart Of Happy Hollow, Paul Laurence Dunbar
Paul Laurence Dunbar Books
In his final collection of short stories, Dunbar’s focus remained on life in America for African-Americans, but rather than a singular focus on plantation society, this set of stories presented a variety of perspectives. One story, which grew in favor during the 20th century, focused on the immorality, or what he called the "folly," of lynching.

Paul Laurence Dunbar Books
Illustrated with photographs and decorations, the majority of poems in this book had been previously published. However, Dunbar did include four new poems: "The Plantation Child's Lullaby," "Blue," "Charity," and "Curiosity." The title poem, "Li'L' Gal," was later recorded as a vocal performance by internationally known concert singer, Paul Robeson.

Nebraska State Historical Society: Transactions and Reports
In this document, E. E. Blackman, the State Archeologist, reports to the Nebraska State Historical Society regarding recently completed work in the field of archeology. Blackman first reports on his 1903 archeological explorations and lecture presentations. Fieldwork emphasized an investigation of flint quarries and geological formations across the central and eastern parts of the state of Nebraska. In the same year, Blackman set out on an expedition along the Blue River, with the hopes of gathering additional relics from previously excavated sites as well as from those yet to be investigated. Of primary importance was artifact collection and interpretation. Although …

Mont-Saint-Michel And Chartres, Henry Adams, Ralph Adams Cram
Electronic Texts in American Studies
FROM the moment when, through the courtesy of my friend Barrett Wendell, I came first to know Mr. Henry Adams's book, MontSaint- Michel and Chartres, I was profoundly convinced that this privately printed, jealously guarded volume should be withdrawn from its hiding-place amongst the bibliographical treasures of collectors and amateurs and given that wide publicity demanded alike by its intrinsic nature and the cause it could so admirably serve. To say that the book was a revelation is inadequately to express a fact; at once all the theology, philosophy, and mysticism, the politics, sociology, and economics, the romance, literature, and …

Italian Villas And Their Gardens, Edith Wharton, Maxfield Parrish
Electronic Texts in American Studies
Edith Wharton’s Italian Villas and their Gardens (1904) followed her debut novel, The Valley of Decision (1902). Century magazine commissioned Wharton for a series of six articles on Italian architecture and an accompanying book-length collection. Wharton embarked out of Boston in January 1903, disembarked near Genoa, and proceeded to tour widely — Viterbo up to Orvieto; Siena, Florence, Rome, and Venice — following recommendations from Vernon Lee, the book’s dedicatee, who “better than anyone else, has understood and interpreted the garden-magic of Italy.” The book analyzes more than eighty wonders, intercut with fifty-two illustrations: wide-angle photographs and evocative color compositions …
