Mexican-American Children In The Process In Acculturation, Elizabeth Ford Stone O'Neill
Mexican-American Children In The Process In Acculturation, Elizabeth Ford Stone O'Neill
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The web of Mexican-American life is complex in its origins, its manifestations, and its degree of identification with or alienation from the dominant culture. A thesis of the length of this one can deal with all this complexity only in a superficial way. However, by a rather narrowly defined examination of a few children certain insights may be gained which could be used as a basis for generalization about other children of similar background, and perhaps even for some tentative generalizations about the problems of the Mexican-American community as a whole.
With this purpose in mind -- to inquire intensively …

The Satire Of Sinclair Lewis, Jack Laverne Davis
The Satire Of Sinclair Lewis, Jack Laverne Davis
American Studies ETDs
Sinclair Lewis was the first American to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. In his acceptance speech Lewis characterized himself as "a writer whose most anarchistic assertion has been that America, with all her wealth and power, has not yet produced a civilization good enough to satisfy the deepest wants of human creatures.” And this assertion underlies most of Lewis's satiric attack upon a wide range of American middle-class values. These attacks were quite often contained in passages which are memorable today for their satiric brilliance. No doubt Lewis chose satire for his principal weapon because it permitted him to …

A Pilot Study Of Wichita Indian Archeology And Ethnohistory, Robert E. Bell, Edward B. Jelks, W., W. Newcombe
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
In 1965 several anthropologists drew up plans for a one-year pilot study of the archeology and ethnohistory of the Wichita Indian tribes. After financial support had been generously provided by the National Science Foundation, the proposed research was carried out. This is a report on the results of that study.
The pilot study was designed to: a) obtain a body of field data from the components of the Spanish Fort sites, the largest and best=documented of the historic Wichita sites in the Red River area; b) make test excavations at several other sites in order that a problem=oriented program of …

Monsignor John A. Ryan: American Social Gospeller: 1900-1945, Paul Albert Gopaul
American Studies ETDs
With the publication of "A Country Without Strikes" in 1900, describing the enactment of a system of compulsory arbitration in New Zealand, John Augustine Ryan, thirty-five years old, a Roman Catholic priest, student at the Catholic University of America, and middlewestern-reared Populist, joined the lists of the Social Gospellers who were trying in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to bring America to grips with an industrial and economic situation that left 71 per cent of the wealth in the hands of 9 per cent of the families. This condition threatened to scar the United States permanently with a …
