Archaeological Survey Of Areas Proposed For Modification In The Salado Creek Watershed, Bexar County, Texas, Thomas R. Hester
Archaeological Survey Of Areas Proposed For Modification In The Salado Creek Watershed, Bexar County, Texas, Thomas R. Hester
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
In late October, 1974, the Center for Archaeological Research of the University of Texas at San Antonio carried out an archaeological survey of the upper Salado Creek Watershed. Localities slated for the construction of 10 Soil Conservation Service floodwater retarding structures were examined, and 29 prehistoric and historic archaeological sites were found. These cultural resources are described and evaluated. Recommendations are provided for the mitigation of adverse effects on certain of these resources.

An Archaeological Survey Of The Nichols Creek Channel Modification, Karnes County, Texas, Anne Adams Fox
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
During the week of November 17-23, 1974, the author conducted an archaeological survey on Nichols Creek in the town of Kenedy, Karnes County, Texas. The survey was conducted under an agreement between the United States Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service (SCS) and The University of Texas at San Antonio, Center for Archaeological Research (a part of Purchase Order No. 427-TX-SCS-75). The project was under the general supervision of Dr. Thomas Hester.
The SCS proposes to channelize a major portion of the creek and of the area where it joins Escondido Creek, to prevent future flooding within the town. The …

Archaeological Investigation Along The Route Of U.S. 281, From Mulberry Avenue To Tuxedo Avenue In San Antonio, Clive Luke
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
The route of impending U.S. 281 from Mulberry Avenue to Tuxedo Avenue in San Antonio traverses the valley of Olmos Creek. The creek originates in the southern edge of the Edwards Plateau between Leon Creek and Salado Creek, and flows in a southeasterly direction to its confluence with the San Antonio River. Near that confluence is a series of large fissure springs occurring along the fault zone. The topography of the drainage area varies from rolling to hill, with the area under concern in this report being undeveloped and covered with brush (Corp of Engineers, US Army, 1972).
The Olmos …

One trench was excavated to a length of thirty-five feet. It was oriented approximately north-south and designated Trench One. To eliminate unnecessary man hours, a backhoe initially removed the disturbed and late fill from the upper levels of the trench. Beneath the levels removed by backhoe, the trench was staked in units of five feet by five feet. Each unit was excavated by hand in arbitrary one foot levels, but the ashy soil was not screened. The elevation of a point on a concrete slab in the middle of the trench was established, using a Texas Highway Department Bench Mark …

In the spring of 1847 at Fort Leavenworth on the Indian frontier a group of United States Dragoons stood staring at a remarkable frontier figure with a “Mahogany-coloured face” and dressed in “the pride of fringed deerskin and porcupine quills.” The costume was creating "no little difference of opinion amongst the troopers” as to which Indian tribe the figure might belong to.

Early in the fall of 1832, while steaming down the Ohio River toward its confluence with the Mississippi, the steamboat Illinois, en route to St. Louis, collided with the Yellowstone with such force that the Illinois was nearly sunk. The accident, though minor, has symbolic value in a study of Washington Irving as a Western writer, for Irving was aboard the Illinois, traveling toward Independence, Missouri, where the famous author would begin a month-long tour on the prairies of Oklahoma—the Southwest. Aboard the Yellowstone, a packet belonging to the American Fur Company, were fur traders and trappers …

“Ex-Cowboy's Novel Wins Harper Prize" announced the New York Times in August of 1935 when H. L. Davis’ Honey in the Horn won the $7,500 Award. Davis received the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1936 and established himself nationally as a Western writer of talent and consequence. During the next twentyfour years, he published seven books—four more novels, a collection of poems which he had written between 1919 and 1933, a volume of stories and sketches which had been published in magazines between 1929 and 1941, and a series of essays about the Northwest.
Frederick Manfred, Joseph M. Flora
Frederick Manfred, Joseph M. Flora
Western Writers Series Digital Editions
Alan Swallow has designated Frederick Manfred, along with other writers of the American West, a maverick. The mavericks are serious writers who have pursued their themes without much recognition from the Eastern press, partly, Swallow felt, because the Eastern press has not understood the Western themes or techniques or has been too contemptuous to make the effort. The truth of Swallow’s contention of prejudice is difficult to assess. But there is, in any event, a group of Western writers who have gone on—sometimes with little recognition—pursuing their themes, meditating on the West, writing their books. Alan Swallow was friend to …

The Wide World Of Jack London, Howard Lawrence Lachtman
The Wide World Of Jack London, Howard Lawrence Lachtman
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The high apostle of the adventure tale in the Strenuous Age, Jack London has never really relinquished the popularity which made him before his death one of the best known and, most widely read writers in the world. It is true that more than one pontiff of literary taste has consigned him to the same, "obsolete" file that contains the remains of Richard Harding Davis, David Graham Phillips, William Sidney Porter, but such reports of London's demise have undoubtedly been premature. Indeed, the contemporary momentum of Jack London studies affords excellent evidence of the critical rediscovery of an American legend. …

The Possibility Of Evil: The Fiction Of Shirley Jackson, John Gordon Parks
The Possibility Of Evil: The Fiction Of Shirley Jackson, John Gordon Parks
American Studies ETDs
The dissertation is a critical study of the fiction of Shirley Jackson. It uses a story published shortly after her death in 1965 to express the key to the main themes and concerns of her fiction: "The Possibility of Evil." It is the thesis of the study that Shirley Jackson's fiction portrays the many incognitoes of evil and the demonic in contemporary life. Through the use of gothic conventions Jackson reveals the contours of human madness and loneliness in a disintegrating world generally bereft of the meliorating power of love and forgiveness.
Each of her six novels is treated fully: …

Lewis Mumford: Technological Change And The Future Of Man., Allan Helsel
American Studies ETDs
Lewis Mumford's fifty odd years of productivity has given us what might well be the most valuable history of technology yet written. But, despite its value, the shortcomings contained in his work sometimes obscure its insights. It is my conclusion that Mumford's methodology, while adequate for his descriptive concerns, has produced in his conclusions a fundamental dilemma. Because he has patterned so much of his inquiry on a methodological structure that is based on the division of man and technics into antithetical absolutes, he leaves us without conclusive answers. One is impressed only by the implication that there can be …
