New Premises For Planning In Appalachia, Richard A. Ball
New Premises For Planning In Appalachia, Richard A. Ball
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The Appalachian Region, particularly Southern Appalachia, has lived through several hundred years of frustration related to its history and geography. The history of the area has become better known during recent years, and it is a history of documented exploitation and socioeconomic disillusionment, a "biography of a depressed area" (Caudill, 1962). Geographically, the region has been regarded essentially as a barrier between the settled East and the fertile lands of the West, a place of rugged terrain and harsh conditions of life. This history and geography have played a large part in the problems which now afflict region and which …

You Can't Go Home Again: James Baldwin And The South, Daryl Cumber Dance
You Can't Go Home Again: James Baldwin And The South, Daryl Cumber Dance
English Faculty Publications
James Baldwin, like innumerable other Black artists, has found that in his efforts to express the plight of the Black man in America, he has been forced to deal over and over again with that inescapable dilemma of the Black American - the lack of a sense of a positive self-identity. Time after time in his writings he has shown an awareness of the fact that identity contains, as Erik Erikson so accurately indicates, "a complementarity of past and future both in the individual and in society." Baldwin wrote in "Many Thousands Gone," "We cannot escape our origins, however hard …

Witnessing the continued plight of their black brothers in America, noting the continued strength of racism in this country, and discouraged by the slowness and ineffectiveness of integration, they have become frustrated and completely disillusioned with the promise of American democracy. If Paul Laurence Dunbar might be said to reflect in some of his works the accommodationist views of the leading black spokesman of his times, Booker T. Washington; and if Langston Hughes might generally be viewed as advocating the thoughtful, rational methods of Martin Luther King and the N.A.A.C.P. with their disciplined social protest and their optimistic faith in …

The Success Ethic: A Study Of 19th Century American Attitudes In Fiction And Reality, Steve Marshall
Honors Projects, American Studies
Workingmen in America have never totally accepted their position in society as fixed or permanent. Generally speaking, American workingmen in the 19th century looked upon their position in society as temporary until such a time came when they were able to ascend into the middle class.

Lofty Hopes And Harsh Reality: The Nature Of Ante-Bellum Feminism In The United States, 1835-1860, Joan L. Flessner
Honors Projects, American Studies
In attempting to reconstruct that aspect of ante-bellum America, I shall endeavor to show how and why feminism developed as it did. To this end, I shall include considerations of the traditional nineteenth century attitudes toward women, the key ideas expressed by the feminists as a response to those socially accepted ideas, the way in which the movement operated in its social context, the negative reactions to feminists and feminist thought, and the Southern version of feminism which, as we shall see later cannot be accurately labeled " feminism" if we use (as I have indicated ) the dominant Northern …

The Colombian Novelist As Critic And Agent Of Social Change, Daniel J. Ritter
American Studies ETDs
The distinction between reality and illusion has been particularly elusive in the New World. Its discovery, conquest and development is a bizarre combination of fact and hope. It is as if the inert reality of this hemisphere were penetrated by some great dreamer to sire a race of men torn between what is and what could, should or might be. This dissertation seeks to discover the tension between reality and illusion as revealed in the contemporary Colombian novel. The study is based upon an analysis of twenty six novels published between 1950 and 1970 and selected because of the authors' …
The Hypothesis Of Creative Evolution In The Philosophy Of Charles Sanders Peirce, Richard Lee Elliott
The Hypothesis Of Creative Evolution In The Philosophy Of Charles Sanders Peirce, Richard Lee Elliott
American Studies ETDs
The purpose of this dissertation is to demonstrate from Peirce's own writings the thesis that his hypothesis or creative evolution, when analyzed in terms of his latest development of his conception of continuity, brings science and theology together in a common inquiry. This study analyzes the developmental and interdependent character of Peirce's scientific metaphysics. It shows how his principle of continuity, as a logical principle of inquiry and as a metaphysical principle, enabled him to overcome the dualistic either/or dichotomy which has saturated most philosophical and theological thought throughout its history in the Western world. The analysis includes an investigation …

At The Green Blade's End: Jose Pedro Diaz Allegorizes Uruguay In Crisis, Marie Johnston Peck
American Studies ETDs
The purpose of the research was to study Uruguay through an examination of social, political and economic themes in Uruguayan narrative literature during the 1960s. The novel Partes de naufragios was selected after the consideration of many alternatives. Jose Pedro Diaz has achieved a synthesis of the messages contained in the narrative fiction of the sixties. Exhibiting consummate skill, the author has constructed a novel whose architecture possesses dynamic esthetic appeal. Publication of Partes de naufragios in December of 1969 coincided with the termination of a decade of crisis in Uruguay. Drawing upon events of the twentieth century, Diaz allegorizes …

I'Ll Take My Stand: The Southern Segregation Academy Movement, Margaret Rose Gladney
American Studies ETDs
This study examines as a social and historical movement the development of segregation academies -- the private, all white elementary and secondary schools founded in the South for the purpose of avoiding public school integration since the Supreme Court's 1954 school desegregation ruling. Chapter I begins by describing the development of Claiborne Academy, the segregation academy in my home town of Homer, Louisiana, in order to establish my relationship to the subject. The chapter describes the nature of the primary research, interviews with state and regional administrators who are leaders in the Southern Independent School Association, and principals, teachers, and …

Joel Munsell was a true artist and craftsman. His love for fine printing and history became a motivating force in his work. It also kept him from becoming a wealthy man. His real riches are to be found in the fine historical books that came from his press and in the traditions he handed down to his sons.
Joel Munsell's career was long and brought him much recognition, respect and honor and ended only with his death on June 15, 1880.

Samuel Hopkins Adams, His Novel, Revelry, And The Reputation Of Warren G. Harding, Robert W. Coren
Samuel Hopkins Adams, His Novel, Revelry, And The Reputation Of Warren G. Harding, Robert W. Coren
The Courier
In November 1926, Samuel Hopkins Adams's novel of Washington politics, Revelry, appeared. Since its central character is an American President easily identifiable as the late Warren G. Harding, it created a great stir. Adams's characterization of Harding was sympathetic, but also uncomplimentary, suggesting several negative personal attributes. A controversy over the appropriateness of Adams's behavior ensued. In the press, Adams was either lauded for telling the truth about Harding or condemned for his bad taste in maligning the President, who died in 1923.
Papers of Samuel Hopkins Adams preserved in the Bird Library of Syracuse University, reveal that the author …

Four archaeological sites in McCulloch County, Texas will be affected by the construction of a fifteen mile section of F.M. 765 from Fife, Texas to its intersection with U.S. 377 north of Mercury, Texas (Figure 1). These four sites were discovered in April 1973, by Dayrnond Crawford of the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation during a routine archaeological reconnaissance of the proposed right-of-way. Two sites, 41MK10 and 41MK27, are located along the banks of Bluff Creek, some four and one-half kilometers upstream from its confluence with the Colorado River. Bluff Creek makes two large meanders between the sites …
