Archaeological Testing Of Site 41cc233 Concho County, Texas, Wayne C. Young
Archaeological Testing Of Site 41cc233 Concho County, Texas, Wayne C. Young
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Prehistoric archaeological Site 41CC233 consists of a burned rock midden and a light lithic scatter outside the right-of-way of US 87 in Concho County, Texas. Testing within the right-of-way was undertaken to determine if the site did extend into the right-of-way area, to determine eligibility for inclusion within the National Register of Historic Places, and to determine site depth and archaeological significance. Recovered evidence suggests that the site minimally extends into the right-of-way and that at least one feature was within the right-of-way. Additional investigations are not warranted due to low recovery rates and construction plans which will effectively cover …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Testing of Site 41WM433 along FM 1431 in Williamson County, Texas, to determine eligibility for inclusion within the National Register of Historic Places and to determine site depth, cultural context, and archaeological significance was undertaken in April 1985. The site is located along a ridge line containing an outcrop of good quality Georgetown flint. Almost all the area within the right-of-way consisted of exposed bedrock ledges. One small incipient burned rock midden was present within the right-of-way. The midden measured 5meters in diameter, but about half of it had been destroyed by relic hunters. Results of the survey and …

Research Design Archaeological Site 41ke93 Kendall County, Texas, Wayne C. Young
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Very little information is available regarding Site 41KE93. The site is located adjacent to FM 474, approximately 8.7 miles northeast of Boerne, in Kendall County, Texas. It is situated on a small finger of land some 100 meters south of the Guadalupe River at Ammans Crossing and is bordered to the west by Sebinas Creek. Two hearths and a scatter of lithic debris were observed on the surface at the time the site was recorded, but no temporal or cultural indicators have, as yet, been found. From surface indications within the project right-of-way, the portion of the site available for …

Robert Emmett Cantwell died at seventy in New York City on 8 December 1978 with his roots in the Pacific Northwest unacknowledged and his varied career as a professional writer still largely unrecognized and unaccounted for. The career that started with the publication of a short story, "Hang by My Thumbs,” in 1929 and included the publication of two highly regarded novels, Laugh and Lie Down in 1931 and The Land of Plenty in 1934, seemed to have receded into obscurity.

The sun shines dully through the winter gray for a few hours, then pitches feebly down. Blackness creeps back to cover the frozen forest stretching for hundreds of miles in every direction. Through the psychotically long night the temperature moves down toward thirty, forty, maybe fifty, degrees or more below zero. Central Alaska is a grim place.

No modern poet has been more dedicated to the American West as both place and idea than William Everson. From his first chapbook. These Are the Ravens (1935), to his most recent full-length volume of poetry. Masks of Drought (1981), and his prose meditations, Birth of a Poet (1982), Everson has asked us again and again to understand the power of what he calls the “archetype of the West": “the Western writer stands as term of the American impulse, and as term he constitutes its mainstream rather than a merely peripheral and incidental relevance” (Archetype West 147). While during …

Charles Sealsfield, Walter Grünzweig
Western Writers Series Digital Editions
The death of an aging, terminally ill American in the small city of Solothurn, Switzerland, on 26 May 1864, did not receive much public attention at first. Charles Sealsfield had lived on his small estate for some six years and was generally regarded as an eccentric, a writer who had known fame in his earlier days but who had long since resigned himself to a peaceful existence in Switzerland, one of the few non-autocratic countries in Europe at that time. To everyone’s surprise, however, the execution of his last will revealed that the old writer was not born in Pennsylvania, …

"Failed Love" In The Drama Of Edward Albee, Steven Leonard Long
"Failed Love" In The Drama Of Edward Albee, Steven Leonard Long
Masters Theses
The plays of Edward Albee are frequently examinations of characters who are unable to love or to be loved. A central and recurring conflict which runs through many of Albee's plays is the conflict which stems from the lack of success which the characters often experience as they strive to find love. The uncertainty and ambiguity which surround the abstraction called "love" leave the characters with feelings of unhappiness, frustration, fear, self-hatred, and despondency. Though the individuals in Albee's plays are aware that love is the ingredient which is missing from their lives, none knows how to go about alleviating …
Mark Twain's Confidence Men, Sharon K. Scruton
Mark Twain's Confidence Men, Sharon K. Scruton
Masters Theses
In Mark Twain's literature the confidence man has special talents, but he is also subject to human failings. Through the characters of Huck Finn and Hank Morgan (A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court) Twain exposes the traps into which a con artist, as a creative talent, can fall. Twain knows these traps, both from experience and from fears of what the future holds. Hank Morgan becomes an extension of Huckleberry Finn. He is a figure who, as he progresses, leaves the best talent of a con artist behind--the talent of instinct. The natural abilities of insight and …
The Law And Mark Twain, Jeff Andrew Weigel
The Law And Mark Twain, Jeff Andrew Weigel
Masters Theses
Varying concepts of law are an essential part in many of Mark Twain's works. Twain's position as an observer and critic of society is often reflected by the way he represents law and justice in his stories. His dislike of injustice and cruelty caused him to focus on these "legal" problems as a way of revealing and attacking various injustices in society. My thesis examines Twain's perception of law as he exposes it in Roughing It, Pudd'nhead Wilson, The Prince and the Pauper, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. The general objective of my …
Violence In Southern Literature, Lucy Katherine Tejero
Violence In Southern Literature, Lucy Katherine Tejero
Theses
This thesis explores the recurring theme of violence in the works of key Southern writers—William Faulkner, Carson McCullers, Flannery O’Connor, Eudora Welty, and Robert Penn Warren. It argues that violence in Southern literature is not merely sensational or gratuitous, but deeply tied to the region’s historical, social, and cultural realities, particularly the legacies of slavery, the Civil War, and entrenched racial hierarchies. By situating each author within this context, the study demonstrates how acts of violence in their fiction serve as a lens through which to examine moral conflict, social change, and human frailty.
Faulkner’s depictions of brutality are shown …

E. Taylor's Use Of Canticles, Clella J. Camp
Masters Theses
In Sermon IV of the Christographia Edward Taylor makes the following statement.
Man, the last in the creation, is the glory of all elementary nature. The image of God in man, the last draught of God upon him, is the glory of Man. Come to artifical instinces, and here it holds; All things of less considerations are first touched on, but that which is last entered on is of the greatest concern…And so it is in the things of God!
Because those things that are constantly fixed in “the last place” are the most complete and the most valued of …
Nature Vs Society In The Works Of Stephen Crane, Rodney R. Parker
Nature Vs Society In The Works Of Stephen Crane, Rodney R. Parker
Masters Theses
The five works of Stephen Crane I chose to discuss in this thesis are: "The Open Boat," "A Mystery of Heroism," "The Blue Hotel," Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, and The Red Badge of Courage. All of these works are representative of the fictional vision of Stephen Crane. A persistent theme that Crane uses in virtually all of his stories is the relationship between the human and the natural worlds. The world of nature is one of indifference. It shows no interest in the activies of mankind, and is, in fact, incapable of doing so. But Crane's …
