John Muir Newsletter winter, 1992 university of the pacific volume 2, number 1 "ON JOHN MUIR: LETTERS FROM ALASKA" by Robert Engberg Bruce Merrell and I have reviewed the articles which John Muir wrote for the San Francisco Daily Evening Bulletin during the years 1879 and 1880. They suggest that it was during his visits to still-wild Alaska that Muir first learned that he could shape public opinion. Only three years before his Alaska travels he had attempted to influence the California legislature to stop clear-cut logging in the higher Sierra Nevada ranges. The politicians ignored him, and Muir's political …

The Feminine, Feminist, Female And Fitzgerald: A Critical Study Of Women Characters In F. Scott Fitzgerald's Novels And Short Stories, Patrick Hicks
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
An exploration of the changing identity of women at the beginning of the twentieth century through the writings of F. Scott Fitzgerald, who lived and wrote during this period of radical social upheaval and who "recognized sooner than most that the nature of [women's] advance had changed radically with the coming of the Jazz Age." (Brian Way) and who was "a spokesman for his generation."

A Late Nineteenth - Century Rural Community: Three Homesteads In Sebago, Maine, Edward S. Allen Ma
All Student Scholarship
This thesis examines three homesteads in the small inland farming community of Sebago, Maine. The homesteads are analyzed in terms of architecture and landscape, along with documentary sources such as census returns. Set against the backdrop of the history of the town, and northern rural New England in general, the story of these three houses offers insights into the soacial history of Sebago during this period.

The Constitution As Literature, James Boyd White
The Constitution As Literature, James Boyd White
Book Chapters
Although presumably no one would say that the Constitution offers its readers an experience that cannot be distinguished from reading a poem or a novel, there is nonetheless a sense in which it is a kind of highly imaginative literature in its own right (indeed its nature as law requires that this be so), the reading of which may be informed by our experience of other literary forms. But to say this may be controversial, and the first step toward understanding how such a claim can be made may be to ask what it is we think characterizes imaginative literature …
