The purpose of this document is to create design guidelines for the city of Anaheim. Katella Avenue is a major thoroughfare in the city, connecting multiple key destinations. The design guidelines will aim to create a comprehensive identity for a section of Katella Avenue. The scope of the project incorporates two major areas in the city: Anaheim Resort, and Platinum Triangle. With the corridor running through the middle of these areas, the design guideline document will link the two together. This study outlines work completed as a part of the CRP 463 senior capstone class outlining a new, comprehensive approach to active transportation on the Cal Poly campus. Led by Dr. William Riggs the project assessed the current conditions, identified opportunities and constraints and then developed conceptual options for a campus active transportation plan. In addition to this process the plan involved completion of a draft Bicycle Friendly University application for the Cal Poly campus (included as a supplemental file) and envisioned conceptual design options for various locations on the campus. Background: The built environment plays a critical role in promoting physical activity and health. The association between parks, as a key attribute of the built environment, and physical activity, however, remains inconclusive. This project leverages a natural experiment opportunity to assess the impact of the Community Parks Initiative (CPI), a citywide park redesign and renovation effort in New York City, on physical activity, park usage, psychosocial and mental health, and community wellbeing.

Methods: The project will use a longitudinal design with matched controls. Thirty intervention park neighborhoods are socio-demographically matched to 20 control park neighborhoods. The study will investigate whether …

Ecodistricts, or neighborhood-scale, community-driven areas of sustainable development, have emerged internationally and within the U.S. to create models of adaptive environmental design and advanced urban infrastructure. Central SoMa is the first ecodistrict to be planned and implemented in San Francisco, with the intention of revitalizing and greening this urbanized region of the city. At this time, the Central SoMa area has very low biodiversity levels, inefficient infrastructure, and poor water management capabilities. In 2010, Nebraska Legislature passed LB 997 requiring all Nebraska cities and counties to include an energy element within their local comprehensive plan by January 2015. For many communities, this is the first time energy has been addressed within their comprehensive plan. Energy planning literature and the requirements of LB 997 were used to create components of an ideal energy plan. Eighteen energy elements were selected by electronic availability and examined for components of an ideal energy plan. Reconstruction after natural disasters can represent large peaks in a community’s greenhouse gas emission inventory. Components of the built environment destroyed by natural hazards have their useful life shortened, requiring replacement before functionally necessary. Though the hazard itself does not release greenhouse gasses, the demolition and rebuilding process does, and these are the emissions we can quantify to better understand the climate impacts of disasters.
