Iodine and Cl are enriched in soils in the vicinity of the Magmont and Buick lead mines near Bixby, southeastern Missouri. The enrichments, up to 5.6 ppm I and 305 ppm Cl, are against regional background of 1.26 ppm I and 41 ppm Cl. The area of highest I and Cl is thought to reflect a zone of base metal sulphide mineralization occurring about 400 m below the surface. Iodine and Cl are also enriched in soils immediately adjacent to a tailings pond, hence these elements would appear to be leached from this source. A zone of enhanced I values …

Simpson-Vance House, Susie Van Kirk Jan 1988

Simpson-Vance House, Susie Van Kirk

Susie Van Kirk Papers

One of Eureka' s finest examples of Queen Anne architecture, the Simpson-Vance House was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. Also historically-significant, the house was associated with an important Eureka builder, James Simpson, and with the prominent John M. Vance family. Despite exterior alterations and adaptive use, the house remains architecturally intact with good potential for full restoration of its original, opulent splendor.

Dynamic Timoshenko Beam-Columns On Elastic Media, Franklin Y. Cheng, Chris P. Pantelides Jan 1988

Dynamic Timoshenko Beam-Columns On Elastic Media, Franklin Y. Cheng, Chris P. Pantelides

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Differential equations, stiffness coefficients, and fixed-end forces are formulated for a Timoshenko beam-column on an elastic foundation subjected to lateral time-dependent excitations and static axial loads. The theoretical formulation includes shear and bending deformations as well as rotatory inertia, with emphasis on two approaches. The two approaches differ in terms of the assumed shear component of the static axial load on the cross section. The first approach is based on the assumption that the shear component of the axial load is calculated from the total slope; in the second approach, the shear component of the axial load is calculated only …

Static Timoshenko Beam-Columns On Elastic Media, Franklin Y. Cheng, Chris P. Pantelides

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Two approaches are used to derive differential equations, stiffness coefficients, and fixed-end forces for the analysis of structural systems composed of Timoshenko beam-columns that may be supported by an elastic foundation. The analysis is for the evaluation of the critical static axial load and buckling mode-shapes of a structure with consideration of elastic media, bending, and shear deformations. The two approaches differ in terms of the assumed shear component of the static axial load on the cross section. The first approach is based on the assumption that the shear component of the axial load is calculated from the total slope, …

Parametric Excitation Of An Axially Moving Band By Periodic Edge Loading, W-Z Ben Wu, C. D. Mote Oct 1986

Parametric Excitation Of An Axially Moving Band By Periodic Edge Loading, W-Z Ben Wu, C. D. Mote

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Simple torsion parametric resonance and combination torsion-bending parametric resonance can be excited in an axially moving band by an in-plane periodic edge loading that is normal to the longitudinal axis of the band. The model simulates band saws, belts, magnetic tapes and like systems under edge forces. Sum combination instabilities, in particular, permit the excitation of low frequency resonances by higher frequency edge forces. Simple bending, combination torsion-torsion, combination bending-bending and difference type parametric instabilities are not excited by periodic normal edge forces. The space of band parameters leading to parametric instability shrinks with increasing axial tension and with increasing …

Effects Of Cd(Ii) And Cu(Ii) On A Biofilm System, Shoou Yuh Chang, Ju-Chang Huang, Yow Chyun Liu

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

There is little information available in the literature to describe the effect of heavy metals on a fixed-film biological waste treatment system. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the toxic effect of Cd(II) and Cu(II) on a fixed-film biological reactor (rotating biological contractor) in treating a sugar waste. Different levels of cadmium (5 and 20 mg/L) and copper (1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 mg/L) were dosed to a three-stage RBC unit treating an influent of 300 mg/L sugar solution. Experimental results indicated that the treatment efficiency was not adversely affected by the presence of copper at …

Vibration Coupling In Continuous Belt And Band Systems, C. D. Mote, W-Z Ben Wu Sep 1985

Vibration Coupling In Continuous Belt And Band Systems, C. D. Mote, W-Z Ben Wu

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Small transverse oscillation of an endless band supported by wheels couples the response of the free spans of the band to oscillation of the wheels. The coupling arises from the finite curvature of the free spans of the band when its bending stiffness is finite. Significant modeling error can occur if a single span of the band is modeled as a simply supported, axially moving beam. The coupling provides an opportunity to dissipate vibration energy. Experiments and finite element analyses support the coupling discussion presented. © 1985 Academic Press Inc.

This study was conducted to: (1) Evaluate the effect of DO on cell yield in a fixed film reactor using 1,000 mg/L sucrose as a substrate; (2) evaluate the correlations of the biofilm thickness and density with DO and their resultant substrate stabilization rates; and (3) examine the response of biofilm communities as a result of DO and biofilm thickness changes. Data obtained from this study indicate that DO has only a minor effect on the cell yield. However, the thickness of aerobic biofilm is definitely related to DO, or thickness (mm) = (2.08 x DO)/(9.2 + DO). The biofilm …

Length-Thermal Stress Relations For Composite Bridges, Jack H. Emanuel, Charles M. Taylor Jan 1985

Length-Thermal Stress Relations For Composite Bridges, Jack H. Emanuel, Charles M. Taylor

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Computer-assisted analysis was used to study the relation among uniform, linear, and nonlinear stress components thermally induced in a composite bridge section for hypothetical parameters of varying span lengths, number of spans, and support conditions, as well as for actual bridges. The results were verified by conventional methods of analysis. The following was concluded for prismatic (constant) sections: (1) For constant proportionality of span lengths, each of the three thermal stress components is independent of span length; (2) variation of the proportionality of span lengths affects only the linear stress component; (3) support reactions and deflections caused by thermal loading …

Smemax? Caution!, Jerome A. Westphal Jan 1984

Smemax? Caution!, Jerome A. Westphal

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The SMEMAX Transformation was tested on samples generated from log-Pearson Type III and Gumbel Extreme Value Type 1 distributions. Although the transformation results in a distribution with a skew near zero, it is not a true normal distribution. The coefficients of kurtosis for the transformed distributions are always less than three and when the parent distribution approaches a reverse-J shape, the transformed distribution is bimodal. When the skew coefficient of the logarithms of events is -0.5 or greater for samples from the log-Pearson Type III distribution, the SMEMAX procedure underestimates the magnitude of events with return periods of 50 yr …

A Stochastic Model For A Small-Time-Interval-Intermittent Hydrologic Process, Charles Darwin Morris Jan 1984

A Stochastic Model For A Small-Time-Interval-Intermittent Hydrologic Process, Charles Darwin Morris

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A methodology is developed for the generation of intermittent small-time-interval (15-min.) precipitation. This methodology consists of three components: a probabilistic wet-and-dry sequence component; a Markovian precipitation distribution component; and a regressive spatial-distribution component. The theory of stochastic hydrologic modeling is described and procedures by which this theory can be applied to a hydrologic time series are presented. In particular, the application of the procedures to small-time-interval-intermittent hydrologic processes is given. The methodology is demonstrated by application to an actual precipitation network, the Boneyard Creek raingage network in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, U.S.A. The trend in frequency of precipitation amounts from the 89-yr. …

Cadmium In Forest Ecosystems Around Lead Smelters In Missouri, Nord L. Gale, Bobby G. Wixson

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

The development of Missouri's new lead belt within the past decade has provided an excellent opportunity to study the dissemination and effects of heavy metals in a deciduous forest ecosystem. Primary lead smelters, within the new lead belt have been identified as potential sources of cadmium as well as lead, zinc, and copper. Sintering and blast furnace operations tend to produce significant quantities of small particulates highly enriched in cadmium and other heavy metals. At one smelter, samples of stack particulate emissions indicate that as much as 0.21 lb of cadmium may be released to the atmosphere per hour. This …

Evaluating The Membrane Fecal Coliform Test By Using Escherichia Coli As The Indicator Organism, James B. Hufham Jan 1974

Evaluating The Membrane Fecal Coliform Test By Using Escherichia Coli As The Indicator Organism, James B. Hufham

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The fecal coliform membrane filter method (MFC) currently used in water pollution analysis was evaluated by using two strains of E. coli, a known fecal coliform, as th indicator organism. A large relative error in the results obtained with this method was found to be dependent upon the brand of membrane filter employed, the medium, and the temperature of incubation. MFC densities varied between 10 and 60% of the densities determined by means of total bacteria counts and total coliform counts performed at 35°C. Due to the large relative error encountered, the MFC method cannot be recommended as an analytical …

Legendre Coefficients For Series Solution Of The Orientation Distribution Function For Ellipsoidal Macromolecules In Two-Dimensional Laminar Flow, Myrne R. Riley

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The double refraction and viscosity of a suspension of asymmetrical colloidal particles subject to continuous laminar flow vary with the orientation distribution of the suspended particles produced by the shearing field and Brownian motion. Recursion formulas are developed for the Legendre coefficients of the series solution of the orientation distribution function for a suspension subject to two-dimensional laminar flow, thus, extending the works of Peterlin, Wayland, and Scheraga. © 1973.
