On The Flux Richardson Number In Stably Stratified Turbulence, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy, Jeffrey R. Koseff
On The Flux Richardson Number In Stably Stratified Turbulence, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy, Jeffrey R. Koseff
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The flux Richardson number Rf (often referred to as the mixing efficiency) is a widely used parameter in stably stratified turbulence which is intended to provide a measure of the amount of turbulent kinetic energy k that is irreversibly converted to background potential energy (which is by definition the minimum potential energy that a stratified fluid can attain that is not available for conversion back to kinetic energy) due to turbulent mixing. The flux Richardson number is traditionally defined as the ratio of the buoyancy flux B to the production rate of turbulent kinetic energy P. An alternative generalized definition …

This study involved the development of a model for evaluating the potential costs and benefits of ozone control by activated carbon filtration in single-family homes. The modeling effort included the prediction of indoor ozone with and without activated carbon filtration in the HVAC system. As one application, the model was used to predict benefit-to-cost ratios for single-family homes in 12 American cities in five different climate zones. Health benefits were evaluated using disability-adjusted life-years and included city-specific age demographics for each simulation. Costs of commercially available activated carbon filters included capital cost differences when compared to conventional HVAC filters of …

Cement Hydration-Based Micromechanics Modeling Of The Time-Dependent Small-Strain Stiffness Of Fly Ash-Stabilized Soils, Xin Kang, Louis Ge, Wen Cheng Liao
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A contact mechanics model, based on the Hertzian elastic contact theory and cementation coating development at particulate scale, was established to predict the time-dependent small-strain stiffness of Class C fly ash-stabilized soils during curing. The cementation coating development model was developed at particulate level based on the Arrhenius law to predict the contact radius growth. A hyperbolic time-temperature relationship was proposed to capture the temperature change of fly ash-stabilized soils and links the pozzolanic reaction rate with curing time. Model-predicted small-strain stiffness was evaluated through both published and experimental test results with good success. The micromechanics modeling indicated that the …

The Bay of Bengal has a complex upper-ocean temperature and salinity structure that is, in places, characterized by strong salinity stratification and multiple inversions in temperature. Here, two short time series from continuously profiling floats, equipped with microstructure sensors to measure subsurface mixing, are used to highlight implications of complex hydrography on upper-ocean heat content and the evolution of sea surface temperature. Weak mixing coupled with the existence of subsurface warm layers suggest the potential for storage of heat below the surface mixed layer over relatively long-time scales. On the diurnal time scale, these data demonstrate the competing effects of …

Experimental Building Demonstration Model With Viscous Fluid Dampers, Blake Thomas Reeve, Brianna Jean Kufa, Aden Malek Stepanians, Sophie Carmion Ratkovich
Architectural Engineering
The Architectural Engineering major places a heavy emphasis on structural dynamics and the role of wind and seismic loading in building analysis and design. Buildings of high importance that are critical to community function, such as hospitals, often utilize supplemental damping devices like supplemental viscous fluid dampers or base isolators to reduce the overall demands on the structural system. The design and analysis of these dampers are typically not taught at the undergraduate level, and is frequently performed by mechanical engineers, in lieu of structural engineers.
To better understand and research building behavior with supplemental damping devices, our multi-disciplinary team …

Investigation of the bond between fiber reinforced composites and the substrates onto which they are applied is of critical importance to understand their failure mechanisms. The bond behavior can be studied using different experimental test set-ups; the most commonly used are the single-lap and double-lap direct-shear tests. Although single-lap shear tests are simpler to carry out than double-lap shear tests, the presence of an eccentricity between the pulling and restraining forces leads to a mixed mode fracture process at the interface, which may influence the results. This study investigates the eccentricity effect on the bond behavior of fiber reinforced cementitious …
Model For Coupled Large Strain Consolidation And Solute Transport In Layered Soils, Hefu Pu, Patrick J. Fox
Model For Coupled Large Strain Consolidation And Solute Transport In Layered Soils, Hefu Pu, Patrick J. Fox
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A numerical model, called CST3 (Consolidation and Solute Transport 3), is presented for coupled one-dimensional large strain consolidation and solute transport in layered soils. The consolidation algorithm accounts for vertical strain, soil self-weight, general constitutive relationships, relative velocity of fluid and solid phases, changing compressibility and hydraulic conductivity during consolidation, unload/reload, time-dependent loading and boundary conditions, external hydraulic gradient, variable preconsolidation stress profiles, and multiple soil layers with different material properties. The solute transport algorithm accounts for advection, diffusion, mechanical dispersion, linear and nonlinear sorption, equilibrium and nonequilibrium sorption, porosity-dependent effective diffusion coefficient, and first-order decay reactions. CST3 is based …
Post-Repair Seismic Assessment Of Rc Bridges Damaged With Fractured Column Bars - A Numerical Approach, Ruili He, Yang Yang, Lesley H. Sneed
Post-Repair Seismic Assessment Of Rc Bridges Damaged With Fractured Column Bars - A Numerical Approach, Ruili He, Yang Yang, Lesley H. Sneed
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Seismic repair of reinforced concrete (RC) bridge columns has been studied extensively during the past several decades; however, few studies have been conducted on the influence of the column repair (member level) on the post-repair performance of bridge structures (system level). In a previous experimental study by the authors, a method was developed to rapidly repair severely damaged RC bridge columns to enable the quick reopening of the bridge to emergency traffic. Thus, a lower limit state was used for the repair design, so that the lateral strength and drift capacity of a repaired RC column with fractured longitudinal bars …
Strain-Controlled Cyclic Simple Shear Tests On Sand With Radial Strain Measurements, Xin Kang, Louis Ge, Kuang Tsung Chang, Annie On Lei Kwok
Strain-Controlled Cyclic Simple Shear Tests On Sand With Radial Strain Measurements, Xin Kang, Louis Ge, Kuang Tsung Chang, Annie On Lei Kwok
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Strain-controlled cyclic simple-shear tests were performed on silica sand with radial strain measurements. The specimens were tested under a constant K0 condition and subjected to cyclic loading and post cyclic monotonic loading. Threshold cyclic shear strain, volumetric strain, secant shear modulus, and damping ratio are investigated. Generally, the volumetric strain behavior in this study agreed well with literature findings that were investigated using the conventional cyclic direct simple shear test (without radial constraints). Radial strain during monotonic simple shear (post cyclic loading) was found to be a good parameter in monitoring the onset of flow slide in cohesionless soil. The …

Evaluation Of Carbonation Resistance Of Paint Coated Concrete For Buildings, Tommy Y. Lo, Wenyu Liao, C. K. Wong, Waiching Tang
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
When evaluating the carbonation resistance of paint coated concrete, the effects of both the strength grade and the curing conditions (standard curing and accelerated curing) of concrete substrate on carbonation resistance of paint coated concrete were investigated. The concept of the carbonation suppression ratio of paint was presented for evaluation of the anti-carbonation performance of the two types of paints (exterior and interior paints) when applied to a reference concrete substrate. The test results showed a good linear relationship between the carbonation depths of the paint coated concrete and the square root of exposure times. Concrete with higher strength grade …

Thermal Mass Behaviour Of Concrete Panels Incorporating Phase Change Materials, Dervilla Niall, Roger West, Sarah Mccormack, Oliver Kinnane
Conference papers
Phase Change Materials (PCM) have been incorporated into a range of building envelope materials with varied success. This study investigates two different methods of combining concrete and phase change materials to form PCM/concrete composite panels. The first method involves adding microencapsulated paraffin to fresh concrete during the mixing process. The second method involves vacuum impregnating butyl stearate into lightweight aggregate which is then included in the concrete mix design. The primary aim of the study is to determine which method is the most effective way to improve the thermal mass characteristics of a concrete panel in the context of a …
Structural Damage Detection By Comparison Of Experimental And Theoretical Mode Shapes, William George Rosenblatt
Structural Damage Detection By Comparison Of Experimental And Theoretical Mode Shapes, William George Rosenblatt
Master's Theses
Existing methods of evaluating the structural system of a building after a seismic event consist of removing architectural elements such as drywall, cladding, insulation, and fireproofing. This method is destructive and costly in terms of downtime and repairs. This research focuses on removing the guesswork by using forced vibration testing (FVT) to experimentally determine the health of a building. The experimental structure is a one-story, steel, bridge-like structure with removable braces. An engaged brace represents a nominal and undamaged condition; a dis-engaged brace represents a brace that has ruptured thus changing the stiffness of the building. By testing a variety …

Case Study Of Quantifying Energy Loss Through Ceiling-Attic Recessed Lighting Fixtures Through 3d Numerical Simulation, Ri Na, Shengmao Lin, Zhigang Shen, Linxia Gu
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications
Air leakage through improperly installed recessed lighting fixtures has been identified as a common issue causing extra energy consumption of residential buildings. However, little quantitative study was found in this area. In this paper, a preliminary evaluation of the magnitude of such energy loss was conducted by numerical simulations using 3 dimensional transient computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. A typical layout of recessed lighting fixtures was used in this case study with boundary conditions in four different seasons, which were obtained from past measured roof/attic temperature data sets. The results of the numerical simulations indicate that leakage of recessed lighting …

The selective reduction of NO by C3H8and the sensitivity to H2O and SO2have been studied over monolithic cordierite-based Fe/Al2O3catalysts, which were prepared by the sol–gel and impregnation method. The catalysts were investigated by N2 adsorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) techniques. Results showed that NO reduction was more than 90% in the absence of oxygen at 500 °C and in the presence of oxygen at 600 °C respectively. In a continues …
Thermal Envelope Analysis Of Local Authority Low Rise Housing Based On Stock Aggregation Theory Using A Remote Feature Extraction Technique., James Pittam
Theses
Understanding the buildings thermal envelope is paramount to analysing existing problems which facilitate cold bridging and low surface temperatures. As no detailed housing stock database is in existence in Ireland which describes the geometrical configuration of the existing housing stock, and to create one would be a major challenge, this research set out to develop a high speed remote cataloguing and geometrical data extraction methodology to build such a database. Replacing traditional measurement methods with a remote method allows for the rapid extraction of fagade information. A remote surveying process is proposed named, the Virtual Survey Method, for the classification …

Properties Of Self-Compacting Concrete With Recycled Coarse Aggregate, W. C. Tang, P. C. Ryan, H. Z. Cui, W. Liao
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The utilization of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) in Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) has the potential to reduce both the environmental impact and financial cost associated with this increasingly popular concrete type. However, to date limited research exists exploring the use of coarse RCA in SCC. The work presented in this paper seeks to build on the existing knowledge in this area by examining the workability, strength, and fracture properties of SCCs containing 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% coarse RCA. The experimental programme indicated that at RCA utilization levels of 25% to 50% little or no negative impact was observed for …

Pumping of Fresh Concrete is of Utmost Importance for Concrete Practice. Required Pumping Pressures Are Typically Estimated based on Design Charts. However, with the Increased Use of Chemical Admixtures and the Development of More Flowable Concrete Mixtures, the Accuracy of Traditional Design Charts is Questioned. in Recent Years, Significant Progress Has Been Obtained in Understanding the Flow of the Material in the Pumping Pipe, Including the Behavior of the Lubrication Layer Near the Pipe Surface. in Comparison with Traditional Design Charts, This Results in More Reliable Pressure Predictions When Considering Very Fluid Concrete Types Like Self-Consolidating Concrete. Some Remaining Challenges …
Identification Of Key Performance Tasks To Demonstrate The Benefit Of Introducing The Facilities Manager At An Early Stage In The Building Information Modelling Process On Public Sector Projects In Ireland., Barry Mcauley
Doctoral
Modelling (BIM) governed process was investigated in this thesis. Governments are now seeking a more rewarding methodology in the management and procurement of public sector building assets. This has seen an integrated focus by International Governments on BIM as a partial solution in both managing and procuring public sector building assets. Despite BIM bringing the Facility Manager closer to project conceptualisation, there was still a reluctance and a lack of perceived benefits of having them involved earlier in the design phase. There remains a lack of clear evidence on what improved contribution the Facilities Manager can provide. This thesis provides …

Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (FRCM) composites can be employed as a valid alternative to Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRP) composites for strengthening existing reinforced concrete (RC) structures. The weakness of FRCM-concrete joints has been reported to be at the matrix-fiber interface rather than within the concrete substrate, as is usually reported in the case of FRP-concrete joints. The experimental investigations regarding FRCM strengthening available in the literature have been performed by applying the FRCM composite onto a surface that was treated before the application, usually by grinding or sandblasting. However, the role of the substrate characteristics on the failure mechanism of …

A Hybrid Approach For Increasing Baffling Factors In Contact Tanks, Justin J. Kattnig, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A novel approach using a hybrid combination of internal baffles and industrial packing material is investigated in order to optimize the hydraulic residence time of a 1,500-gal rectangular concrete tank. Hydraulic residence time, which is commonly classified using the baffling factor (BF), was determined from residence time distribution curves obtained using both computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and physical tracer studies. CFD simulations were used to model two scenarios. The first scenario was a base system consisting of an unbaffled concrete tank, and the second scenario was a two-baffle system. Computational simulation results were experimentally validated via tracer studies on …
Subjective Perception Of Varying Reflection Densities In Room Impulse Responses, Hyun Hong
Subjective Perception Of Varying Reflection Densities In Room Impulse Responses, Hyun Hong
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Reverberation time (RT) is a metric commonly used to describe room acoustic conditions, but different rooms which have the same reverberation time can have different reflection densities. Much less is known about how humans perceive different reflection densities and how sensitive humans are to changes in reflection density. Previous investigations in the existing literature have studied the upper limit of distinguishable reflection density using artificial impulse responses, but not with more realistic impulse responses simulated in room acoustic software or measured from real rooms. The aim of this dissertation is to investigate methods for quantifying reflection density from measured impulse …

Block Sparse Memory Improved Proportionate Affine Projection Sign Algorithm, J. Liu, S. L. Grant
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A block sparse memory improved proportionate affine projection sign algorithm (BS-MIP-APSA) is proposed for block sparse system identification under impulsive noise. The new BS-MIP-APSA not only inherits the performance improvement for block-sparse system identification, but also achieves robustness to impulsive noise and the efficiency of the memory improved proportionate affine projection sign algorithm (MIP-APSA). Simulations indicate that it can provide both faster convergence rate and better tracking ability under impulsive interference for block sparse system identification as compared with APSA and MIP-APSA.
