Bo01: Planning Precedent, Ali Chen, Killian Angell
Bo01: Planning Precedent, Ali Chen, Killian Angell
Precedents
Bo01, Malmö, Sweden (2001): Developed on abandoned industrial sites close to the center of Sweden’s third largest city, Bo01 is a high-density urban district completely reliant on renewable energy. It is known also for its innovative recycling of rainwater and wastewater. The dense, irregular street pattern was meant to provide both a pleasant pedestrian character as well as a buffer against strong winds coming off the ocean. Bo01 was designed by prominent architect Renzo Piano, among others.
The purpose of looking at this precedent was to spur the students’ thinking about sustainable features in terms of both planning and architecture.
Re-Envisioning Paradise, Ryan M. Huddlestun, Christian Bernard
Re-Envisioning Paradise, Ryan M. Huddlestun, Christian Bernard
Goals
This poster gives a timeline of the students' work over the course of the two-quarters. It began with a research phase in early January, barely six weeks after the fire had been extinguished, and continued with a town planning phase through mid-March. This was followed by a building design phase to the end of the studio in early June.
Throughout this time period, the students made four visits to Paradise, and held numerous public presentations there and in Chico, Sacramento, and San Luis Obispo.
Rethink Housing, Killian Angell, Benjamin Campbell
Rethink Housing, Killian Angell, Benjamin Campbell
Goals
As a community of mostly single-family homes, Paradise lacked diverse housing opportunities. The goal of rethinking housing was a proposal for an assortment of higher-density housing and mixed-uses, strategically located, to accommodate a wider range of residents in terms of age, marital status, family situation, and economic position. Such diversity could provide a more stable future for Paradise, allowing younger workers and lower-income families the ability to both live and work there, while still keeping the town’s overall low-density character.
The projects on this poster show a range of housing types and target populations: workforce, co-housing, and senior housing. In …

Rethink Infrastructure, Khoa Le, Arielle Eleazar
Goals
In the Camp Fire, Paradise lost thousands of houses as well as stores, gas stations, and many other private commercial enterprises. But the town also lost many significant civic institutions. The projects on this poster show some of the individual projects intended to replace those institutions. These are ones that could provide renewed focus towards the community’s wellness, sustainability, governance, and education.
Rethink Mobility, Kaleena Klimeck, Foster Westover
Rethink Mobility, Kaleena Klimeck, Foster Westover
Goals
Before the Camp Fire, Paradise was defined by a disorganized street network and a sprawling low-density development pattern, making residents highly reliant on cars. These factors also hampered the residents’ ability to evacuate the town quickly during the Camp Fire.
The goal of rethinking mobility issues in Paradise included a range of initiatives: from increasing street connectivity to improving roadways to encouraging alternative means of transportation, such as biking and walking. All of these had two main purposes: reducing residents’ reliance on cars for everyday travel within the town, and increasing safety, on a day-to-day basis, but primarily in the …
Redefine Economy, Elisabeth Frizzell, Ryan M. Huddlestun
Redefine Economy, Elisabeth Frizzell, Ryan M. Huddlestun
Goals
The students’ individual building proposals in both studios ran the gamut: from housing to cultural amenities, and from civic infrastructure to commercial enterprises. Together, these projects were intended to diversify Paradise’s economy and create a more stable base for current and future residents. They did so by taking advantage of the town’s location: its proximity to Chico and a major state university, and its position as a potential gateway to the Sierra.
A resort lodge, a conference center, a performing arts center, and a “Food Habitat” were all intended as tourist draws. A co-working center and a new biomedical-research facility …

Re-Envisioning Paradise Map, Ali Chen, Emma Puryear
Goals
This poster is a large-scale version of the map showing the main features of the students' plans for Paradise: the new downtowns (East and West Villages); the neighborhood centers dispersed throughout the town, new road connections out of the town, and locations of the building proposals.
Paradise Redux: Urban Design Assignments, Part Two, Kent Macdonald
Paradise Redux: Urban Design Assignments, Part Two, Kent Macdonald
Project Description and Assignments
The next assignment asked the students to start trying to make sense of what they’d seen and learned about Paradise. There were three steps: an individual task that asked them to list noteworthy features of the town and possible mitigations or enhancements to those features; a small-group effort to brainstorm possible planning scenarios; and finally, a whole-class effort to reach consensus around a vision for the town’s future.

Paradise Redux: Urban Design Assignments, Part One, Kent Macdonald
Project Description and Assignments
This initial group of assignments lays out the planning-related tasks the students undertook in the first weeks of the course.
The first task was to gather basic background information on Paradise. The second was to make precedent studies of eight significant town-planning or large-scale projects realized over the past 90 years or so. The last task was a figure-ground exercise, based on Giambattista Nolli’s famous map of Rome in 1748, that would allow them to compare the precedents’ formal organizations with each other and with Paradise.

Paradise Redux, Kent Macdonald
Project Description and Assignments
This document lays out the two types of work that the students undertook over the course of six months: the creation of overarching planning guidelines and the development of architectural proposals for specific sites in Paradise.
The planning work was a group effort lasting about five weeks. In small teams at first, the students did research on the town, as well as some historical planning precedents. Later, they came together to establish explicit goals and an armature for the town’s reconstruction.
Following the initial phase, the students – working alone – chose project sites and building types, which they then …
Paradise Senior Co-Housing, Victor Hoyos
Paradise Senior Co-Housing, Victor Hoyos
Studio Projects
Victor Hoyos’s Paradise Senior Co-Housing project is located at the proposed neighborhood center in the northwest of town near Billie Road. Co-housing blends independent and communal living, and as such is a means to providing an affordable housing option – as well as a sense of community – for low-income individuals. In Victor’s scheme, three rings of housing units, each combining communal living and dining facilities, surround interconnected courtyards that have been arranged to preserve the natural environment.
Paradise Podium, Elisabeth Frizzell
Paradise Podium, Elisabeth Frizzell
Studio Projects
Elisabeth Frizzell’s Paradise Podium is a mixed-use housing project located in the proposed East Village. Apartments in three buildings sit over a podium of parking in the center of the trapezoidal site while one-story retail buildings hold the corners. Landscaped areas around the buildings provide a transition between the street and the housing.
Paradise W.E.T. Center, Arielle Eleazar
Paradise W.E.T. Center, Arielle Eleazar
Studio Projects
Arielle Eleazar’s Paradise W.E.T. Center is a project focused on water education and actual treatment, located just below the proposed East Village downtown. The goal of this center is to provide an alternative solution to the town’s wastewater management by showcasing a hybrid system heavily reliant on biological filtration. This building also serves as a live demonstration area for water conservation, educating the public about the importance of water as a resource.
The Lodge, Sophia Smith
The Lodge, Sophia Smith
Studio Projects
Sophia Smith’s The Lodge is a hotel, restaurant, and spa, all contained within a single building, located on the far west edge of Paradise, overlooking Little Butte Creek canyon. The building, divided into two long bars separated by a garden, seeks to integrate with its surroundings: its long, narrow forms stretch across and down the bluff edge. The guest rooms, public spaces, and the occupiable roof all look out onto the vast, beautiful canyon below. The intent is that guests and visitors feel at all times connected with nature.
Regrowth: A Paradise Rec Center, Benjamin Campbell
Regrowth: A Paradise Rec Center, Benjamin Campbell
Studio Projects
Ben Campbell’s Regrowth Recreation Center is located on a site overlooking the new park in the center of the proposed East Village. Seeking to encourage exercise and healthy lifestyles, the center has areas for weight training, classroom instruction for yoga and other types of exercise, a basketball court, and both an indoor and outdoor pool. The building is conceived as a series of arms extending from a central core. A café and retail shop space on the ground floor help integrate the center with the new downtown.
Forum: A Stage For Paradise, Kaleena Klimeck
Forum: A Stage For Paradise, Kaleena Klimeck
Studio Projects
Kaleena Klimeck’s Forum is a performing arts center, located in the proposed East Village downtown. The center includes three stages, providing both indoor and outdoor venues for musical and theater performances, as well as exhibit spaces, rehearsal spaces, a restaurant, and a learning lab. The project is meant to be an attraction for residents as well as a draw for tourists.
The Pine School: The Paradise Integrated Natural Education School, Natalie Giombi
The Pine School: The Paradise Integrated Natural Education School, Natalie Giombi
Studio Projects
Natalie Giombi’s The PINE School is a school for elementary-level students. Located at a proposed neighborhood center in the northwest of Paradise, the school focuses on environmental education as a means to inspire children. Communal spaces – a library, gymnasium, and administrative offices – are housed in a long bar facing the street. Behind it, facing south, three classroom wings open to a large garden with several outdoor classrooms and a natural play space. The building itself incorporates several sustainable features and so serves as a learning vehicle for the students.
