The National Historic Preservation Act: Preserving History, Impacting Foreign Relations?, Mark P. Nevitt

Faculty Articles

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the highest political leader in Japan, shook his head in disbelief. His tenure as Prime Minister had been tense, partly due to the ongoing question of a replacement airfield for the U.S. Marines in Futenma. A predecessor, Yukio Hatoyama, also suffered political fallout stemming from his reversal of a public promise to find a replacement location for the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station. Prior to the Hatoyama administration, the Japanese government had selected a new location for the Marine Air Station, a remote area far removed from the busy city of Okinawa in Henoko. Moving …

The Role Of Design In Creatingsustainability In Tourism Development:The Case Of Bang Saen, Thailand, Daichi Iwase

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

Tourism has become one of the largest and fastest growing economic sectors in the world, and it is predicted that the signifi cance of tourism will increase in the future. This long-term trend hasencouraged many governments in both developed and developing countries to adopt tourism as an engine of socio-economic development. The massive, rapid and promising growth of tourism provides greater opportunities for spreading prosperity but also contributes to the transformation of natural and cultural landscapes on which tourism depends. This paper will discuss the role of design in tourism development for maintaining the landscapes upon which the sustainability of …

Ecological Urban Design Visuality And Landscape, Victoria Marshall Jan 2014

Ecological Urban Design Visuality And Landscape, Victoria Marshall

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

This essay describes a research project that aims to shape ecological urban design practice in two Asian Mega Deltas. This is important because many important ecological concepts such as urbanheterogeneity become more abstract when considered in relation to everyday life. However, these concepts are key to meeting sustainability goals through supporting the components of resilience. The research project engages heterogeneity through the type of democratic visuality and spatial imaginary afforded by aerial photography and satellite imagery. This inter-referenced visuality, created by airplanes, satellites, sensors, interfaces, and handheld devices, is new. It operates differently from older models of cartography, map, plan …

What If Hewlett And Packard Had Started A Band Instead?... Denton Texas' Music Scene As Economic Cluster And Its Broader Implications For The City's Economy, Michael Seman

Planning Dissertations - Archive

A growing body of research examines the production processes, economic activity, and symbolic value of the arts in the urban economy. This research often broadly considers all arts disciplines together, masking structural and operational differences amongst them. Research detailing popular music and its relationship with the urban economy is minimal. Prior research tangentially acknowledges that local music scenes function as economic clusters, but little detailing of their dynamics as such exists. The bulk of attention is paid to how these clusters operate in the framework of the broader music industry and not how they develop or impact their surrounding urban …

An Expensive Imitation: How The Vanderbilt Family Became The House Of Vanderbilt, Hugh Long

Global Tides

By examining a range of sources from Gilded Age newspaper articles to architectural photographs to historical commentaries, this paper attempts to prove that the esteemed Vanderbilt family was imitating European Aristocracy. By examining first hand accounts of parties that family members threw, houses that they built, and places they traveled to, the paper develops its thesis. The use of primary sources is abundant and attempts to integrate the family’s story of progression from a small clan to one of the most powerful American “houses” into the concrete evidence. Pictures and visual evidence are key in showing material examples of how …

Balancing Design Theories And Individual Needs In Residential Modifications For People Living With Als, Gail J. Weber Jan 2014

Balancing Design Theories And Individual Needs In Residential Modifications For People Living With Als, Gail J. Weber

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This research and design project examines the philosophies and psychological factors of aging in place and universal design, as well as the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG), and how they can be realistically applied in interior design for people living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a terminal illness with an approximate two- to five-year prognosis. The case study explores the design needs and preferences of one couple living with ALS. Analysis of the case study suggests that a complete universal design or ADAAG-compliant overhaul in the home is ill-advised for these subjects, given their modest budget and limited …

Hybrid Of Natural Element Method (Nem) With Genetic Algorithm (Ga) To Find Critical Slip Surface, Shahriar Shahrokhabadi, Vahid Khoshfahm, Hamed Nabizadeh Rafsanjani

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

One of the most important issues in geotechnical engineering is the slope stability analysis for determination of the factor of safety and the probable slip surface. Finite Element Method (FEM) is well suited for numerical study of advanced geotechnical problems. However, mesh requirements of FEM creates some difficulties for solution processing in certain problems. Recently, motivated by these limitations, several new Meshfree methods such as Natural Element Method (NEM) have been used to analyze engineering problems. This paper presents advantages of using NEM in 2D slope stability analysis and Genetic Algorithm (GA) optimization to determine the probable slip surface and …

Neighborhood Park For Children As A Resilient Landscape:In Terms Of Its Physical Feature, Silvia Alam, Shuahana Sharmin Choiti

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

Due to the recent apartment development pattern in Dhaka city, the residential building sites are no longer providing open spaces for children's play areas. Scarcity of open places decreases children'soutdoor activity, which causes them to suffer in terms of physical and mental health. This crisis can be mitigated by public open spaces like parks, plazas and playing fi elds. Therefore neighborhood parks as a resilient landscape can play an important role in children's social, physical and psychological wellbeing at a local and proximal scale. The success of a neighborhood park for children depends on their appearance into the park at …

Discovering Landscape Urbanism Within Resilient Landscape:Searching From Natural Setting To Structured Ground, Ayasha Siddiqua Jan 2014

Discovering Landscape Urbanism Within Resilient Landscape:Searching From Natural Setting To Structured Ground, Ayasha Siddiqua

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

Settlements in urban and rural areas treat landscapes differently. In urban areas within the structured layouts, the landscape is likely to be dominated by human activities; settlements in natural settingsrequire a more sensitive approach to landscapes. But in both cases landscapes are strong, driving forces to guide settlement design. This can range from details to larger arenas, direction of future requirements, adjustments to future growth, coping with probable diffi culties and providing alternate solutions. Landscape urbanism has inherited some issues and concepts derived from resilient landscapes. To search for urbanism within a resilient landscape this paper examines two distinct examples …

Lao Immigrant Cultural Adaptation In Southwestern Louisiana's Urban Landscapes, Phanat Xanamane

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

In their 30-year history in Iberia Parish, Louisiana, Lao immigrants have continually reasserted their identity through various social, economic, and cultural modes connected to a set of embedded relationsor ecologies. A unique set of adapted spatial typologies that reinforced Lao village culture and social networks on multiple scales emerge from the translation of the ecologies. Mappings, diagrams, and photomontages help reveal these settlement patterns and adaptations of space and building types. The paper offers a framework for how contemporary cultural groups can be studied through the lens of architectural and urban design theory. It shows how social groups like immigrants …

The Influence Of National Culture On Effectiveness Of Safety Trainings During Postdisaster Reconstruction, Behzad Esmaeili, Kevin Grosskopf, Amy Javernick-Will Jan 2014

The Influence Of National Culture On Effectiveness Of Safety Trainings During Postdisaster Reconstruction, Behzad Esmaeili, Kevin Grosskopf, Amy Javernick-Will

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

Non-English speaking workers constitute a disproportionately high number of workers involved in postdisaster reconstruction. Additionally, the rate of fatality among these workers is higher than the industry average. Research shows this population is more prone to unsafe behaviors in the working environment, conceivably because many of these workers are sent into the field prior to any formalized training. Recent studies show that the native culture of construction workers can impact risk-taking behavior. While numerous researchers have attempted to develop training materials for Hispanic workers, the number of studies that consider the impact of native culture on safety behavior is minimal. …

Virtual Surface Temperature Sensor For Multi-Zone Commercial Buildings, Yuebin Yu, Denchai Woradechjumroen, Daihong Yu

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

Multi-zone structure is commonly used in small commercial office buildings, retail stores and supermarket. While there is no adjacent wall between the zones, the impact of a neighbor zone on the current zone can be approximated and analyzed through the application of virtual walls. It is critical to accurately estimate the virtual wall surface temperature in order to evaluate the model uncertainty and apply improved supervisory control on multiple rooftop air-conditioning units (RTUs). We propose an innovative virtual surface temperature sensor based on system-identification to solve this challenge. The validation of the virtual temperature model is processed by the three …

Summary Of Large-Scale Nonplanar Reinforced Concrete Wall Tests, Anahid A. Behrouzi, Andrew Mock, Laura Lowes, Dawn Lehman, Daniel Kuchma

Architectural Engineering

Nonplanar wall configurations are prevalent in engineering practice, yet relatively little research has addressed nonplanar walls and the earthquake response of these components remains poorly understood. A recent experimental test program conducted by the authors investigated the earthquake response of modern, ACI Code compliant C‐shaped walls subjected to unidirectional and bidirectional lateral loading. To compare the results of this study with previous experimental investigations conducted by others, this document examines laboratory tests of slender nonplanar walls available in the literature. Response histories, damage patterns, drift capacity and failure mechanisms are used to characterize the behavior of each nonplanar wall test …
