Severan Marble Plan Of Rome Data Files, Justin St. P. Walsh

Art Faculty Data Sets

In its original state, the Severan Marble Plan of Rome, placed on the wall of the Temple of Peace between 203 and 211 CE, showed viewers the locations of buildings throughout Rome, and even the groundplan of each of those buildings. It is today an extraordinary piece of evidence for understanding the city in that time period, despite its ruinous state. It survives in over 1,100 fragments, representing only about 10% of its original surface area. To date, scholars have successfully placed only about 100 of those fragments with respect to the buildings they depict. Using GIS and CAD software, …

Safety Effect Of Missouri's Strategic Highway Safety Plan: Missouri's Blueprint For Safer Roadways, Mojtaba A. Mohammadi, V. A. Samaranayake, Ghulam H. Bham

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study systematically evaluated the changes in motor vehicle crashes that occurred on the Missouri Interstate highway system following the implementation of the Missouri Strategic Highway Safety Plan (MSHSP) between 2004 and 2007. The MSHSP implemented crash injury reduction strategies in enforcement, education, engineering, and public policy. Empirical Bayesian methods were commonly used to evaluate the effects of any change in safety as a result of countermeasures. This paper presents a simple new approach to evaluating the effects of Missouri's safety plans on roadway crashes. For crash data associated with traffic and roadway characteristics, negative binomial regression models were developed …

Quality Of Life, Perceptions Of Change, And Psychological Well-Being Of The Elderly Population In Small Rural Towns In The Midwest, Rodrigo Cantarero, James J. Potter

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

This study examines the quality of life of the elderly residents of two rural Nebraska towns, both having experienced a large increase in population. The study examines how the residents’ perception of changes in the community affect their view of quality of life, and identifies determinants of psy-chological well-being for these elderly residents. The results are compared to the non-elderly resi-dents of these two communities for purposes of contrast. A face-to-face survey of the residents addressed physical, social/cultural, economic, and service issues. Both correlation and regression were used to analyze the data. The quality of life of the elderly residents …

The State Of Community Design: An Analysis Of Community Design Center Services, Donovan Finn, Jason Brody Jan 2014

The State Of Community Design: An Analysis Of Community Design Center Services, Donovan Finn, Jason Brody

School of Marine & Atmospheric Sciences Faculty Publications

Community design is a specific type practice rooted in participatory and emancipatory notions of planning and design to overcome environmental, social and economic injustice at low or no cost to the client. Since its beginnings in the early 1960’s, many of community design’s early and then-radical ideas have become more mainstream. In order to assess the state of modern community design, in comparison to its activist roots, this project reviews the websites of 81 community design centers in the United States to ascertain the approaches that centers use in order to successfully achieve operational goals. The research suggests that the …

Co-Creation: A Study Of Intimacy And Control, Erin Brooks Jan 2014

Co-Creation: A Study Of Intimacy And Control, Erin Brooks

Theses and Dissertations

Drawing from ongoing revitalization initiatives in Richmond, Virginia, this adaptive reuse project creates a structured dialogue between public and private expression to create a more immersive gallery experience for viewer and practitioner. The gallery experience is twofold; traditional object-based display and nontraditional process-based display. Preservation of the historic fabric of the existing Handcraft building at 1501 Roseneath is integrated with the transformative potential of introducing voyeuristic opportunities in creating a community arts center. Notions of voyeurism will center around ideas of visual connection and physical separation. This project questions if tactics of voyeurism, which inherently create physical barriers, can facilitate …

Plotinus: The First Philosopher Of The Unconscious, John Shannon Hendrix Jan 2014

Plotinus: The First Philosopher Of The Unconscious, John Shannon Hendrix

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

Plotinus is sometimes referred to as “the first philosopher of the unconscious.” In his 1960 essay “Consciousness and Unconsciousness in Plotinus,” Hans Rudolph Schwyzer called Plotinus “the discoverer of the unconscious.” What exactly was Plotinus’ unconscious? In the Enneads, Plotinus asks about soul and intellect: “Why then…do we not consciously grasp them…? For not everything which is in the soul is immediately perceptible” (V.1.12.1–15).[i] In the De anima of Aristotle, “Mind does not think intermittently” (430a10–25).[ii]We cannot remember eternal mind in us, because passive mind is perishable. Is the productive or active intelligence in our mind …

With the accelerated growth of most Venezuelan cities, many of them show precarious settlements where residents seek to resolve their housing needs while services, facilities, and public spaces in particular hove been neglected. This is the case in Caracas and within the Municipality of Sucre, the second largest in size and population of the whole country. In this context. the Espacios Sucre Program, an interdisciplinary initiative with the main purpose of building networks of public space in both small and medium scales, not only works to confront the deficit but also to relate the contrasting areas of the Municipality and …

The Identification Of Key Economic And Property Variables That Impact On Prime Office Rents: A Study Of Seven European Cities, Aoife Reilly Jan 2014

The Identification Of Key Economic And Property Variables That Impact On Prime Office Rents: A Study Of Seven European Cities, Aoife Reilly

Other Resources

The aim of this dissertation is to identify and assess the impact of macroeconomic and property variables on prime office rental levels. Data from seven diverse European cities was gathered from 2000 to 2014 and statistical analysis using econometric modelling was undertaken. The results unveil a number of relationships between the explanatory variables and prime office rents. In particular, the results highlight movements in the office vacancy rate and GDP as important variables impacting change in prime office rental levels while employment, interest rates and inflation play a less significant role. Results indicate that econometric modelling has a role to …

A Transient Community For A Transient Lifestyle, Sameh Mohamed Ibrahim Jan 2014

A Transient Community For A Transient Lifestyle, Sameh Mohamed Ibrahim

Theses and Dissertations

The project suggests an alternative means for living in Qatar. It proposes the development of a transient, floating community a man-made, transitory archipelago of floating housing units located at the ‘soon to be abandoned’ docks a short distance from the Museum of Islamic Art and the Doha Corniche. The design, through a variety of bespoke dwelling options, can provide both more and less nomadic housing to accommodate a variety of dif- ferent lifestyles and social units. Clustered around three permanent islands (containing a cultural/activity center, three adaptable ‘work-unit’ towers, and a park/commercial area), the design provides a wide set of …

The Kasunean River Revisited:Some Notions On The Role Of Cultural Landscape Elements In Cirebon City, West Java, Indonesia, Dini Rosmalia, Widjaja Martokusumo

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

Waterbodies are the most important landscape elements in the history of settlement formation. Since the 15th century, rivers have played a critical role in distributing logistics and have served as signifi cant infrastructure. In relation to the revitalization of heritage structures in Cirebon, the role of the river, symbolizing the source of life and fertility, has been revisited and has raised the notion of ecological concerns. The reconstruction of Lawang Sanga at the River Kasunean has unveiled the challenge of maintaining cultural landscape elements in regards to resilient landscapes. This paper argues the relation between revitalization efforts and the expanding …

The Impact Of Historical Geography And Agricultural Land Development Processes On Wetland Restorationmethods Used To Create Ecological Networks:A Comparison Of Japan And The Netherlands, Yuji Hara, Fransje Hooimeijer, Steffen Nijhuis, Maki Ryu, Arjan Van Timmeren

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

In the Osaka area in the 1880s, rice was grown mostly in dry fi elds in upland areas, and a few paddy fi elds were situated on the natural wet landforms along the major rivers and streams on the Osaka Plain. As the area developed, dry fi elds became irrigated, and the lowland fi elds were fi lled and converted to urban land uses. For the Osaka city region, developed in this historical context, an ecological network has been proposed by the national government in 2006. The proposal was partially infl uenced by ecological network planning in the Netherlands, and …

Amphibian Identity?Waterspatial Resilience Of Khlong In Bangkok, Benjamin Casper

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

More than 1.100 khlong1in Bangkok offer various opportunities for urban development. Over 2.200 km still exist in the Province of Bangkok alone. Transport and living space onthe water are foundonly along certain parts of the system as khlong are predominantly used as open sewage, drainage and irrigation system. The particular urban structure creates complementary spaces that interface water with land. This article aims to understand the logic of structural elements of Bangkok in the Chao Phraya Delta of Thailand and to change the viewpoint, to look from the water to the city. To understand the researchapproach better the water space, …

The Salt Marsh - Pier 1:Brooklyn Bridge Park, Michael Van Valkenburgh, Matthew Urbanski, Gullivar Shepard, Eric Rothstein

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

This article details the design and construction of the Pier 1 salt marsh in Brooklyn Bridge Park, New York City. The construction of this humble wetland signals a shift in urban park-making, as it compelsvisitors to venture and engage with the water's edge, instead of viewing it from afar, separated from the waterfront by constructed barriers. This softening of the waters' edge represents an appreciation for the value of urban nature, and makes real the notion that urban parks can be more than an escape from the city—they can be a place to enjoy nature within the city.
