Law Enforcement Measures Against Chinese Maritime Militia, Kentaro Furuya
Law Enforcement Measures Against Chinese Maritime Militia, Kentaro Furuya
International Law Studies
This article undertakes a comprehensive legal assessment of Chinese maritime militia vessels and their operations, employing a law enforcement perspective as the analytical lens. During peacetime, those vessels engage in fishing and low-intensity military activities but during armed conflict they transition to tasks like reconnaissance. Notably, these maritime militias are frequently deployed in what is commonly termed as "gray zone" scenarios, which lack a clearly defined designation as either peacetime or armed conflict. Their principal objective lies in asserting territorial claims without resorting to full-scale armed conflict. This article delves into an exploration of the legal status accorded to these …

The Peaky Blinders: A Postmodern And Ideological Analysis Of Class, Gender, And Nationalism, Charlotte Ferguson, David Sullivan
Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research
This paper focuses on the ideological and postmodern approaches to analyzing the popular television show from the British Broadcasting Corporation, Peaky Blinders. Utilizing a thematic approach for analysis, this paper highlights social class, gender, and nationalism throughout the show that best exemplifies the impact it has on challenging and subverting traditional narratives, as well as reflecting and upholding particular beliefs and values about the world. The analysis of the themes, and intersectionality of the themes, assesses the impact the television show has on audience viewpoints of social constructs, norms, and reality.
Westernization Or Localization? The (Mis)Reading Of “The Tragic” In Modern Chinese Literary Discourse, Tian Gu
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This paper examines the features and causal factors in constructing an idea of the tragic in modern Chinese literary discourse. It attempts at revisiting and reproducing the realities of misreading and variation upon modern Chinese introduction of the term “tragedy” (beiju) at different socio-historical periods, and has observed the interplay between two trends, namely, Westernization and localization, through the negotiation of “the tragic” into modern Chinese literary practice. These two trends have been integrated by a political and pragmatic perspective, which dominates the formation of a modern Chinese literary discourse on “the tragic”. This perspective offers both possibility …
Translating Diversity From Ralph Ellison To Kenzaburō Ōe, Raphaël Lambert
Translating Diversity From Ralph Ellison To Kenzaburō Ōe, Raphaël Lambert
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
The purpose of this article is twofold: first, it endeavors to understand the vagaries of the notion of diversity as it travels from one national and political context to the next; and second, it shows how two major fiction writers and essayists have used that notion in their work and to what ends. The first part focuses on the work of Ralph Ellison, who put diversity at the heart of his reflection on what a truly democratic American society should be. Kenzaburō Ōe initially borrowed the notion of diversity from Ellison himself, but as the second part demonstrates, Ōe did …
Taking Curriculum Reform To The Next Level: The Need For Decolonising Work In Engineering Education, Gabrielle Orbaek White
Taking Curriculum Reform To The Next Level: The Need For Decolonising Work In Engineering Education, Gabrielle Orbaek White
Research Papers
As humanity is faced with unparalleled challenges, from the climate emergency to rising inequality, there is a renewed emphasis on the role of engineering professionals to contribute solutions to global problems. However, there is increasing recognition that the way that engineers are trained through higher education is inadequate to prepare them to address these grand challenges. This paper aims to deepen theoretical perspectives on why the engineering education status quo is falling short. Taking a British perspective, I outline how the epistemology and cultural ideologies, or the “episteme,” of engineering continues to shape our discourses within modern day engineering education, …

From The Mothers’ Movement To Cradlr: An Interaction Design For Refugee Children, Jing Zhou
IASDR Conference Series
This paper presents the rationale, implementation, social and cultural influences, and historical background of Cradlr, a human-centered digital network concept designed to rescue and keep displaced children connected with their families, resources, and heritage on a global scale. The seed of Cradlr was sown in 2018 when I launched the Jiang Jian project, which sheds light upon the Mothers’ Movement in China, which rescued and educated 30,000 refugee children during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Inspired by the Mothers’ Movement and European countries during World War II, such as the Women’s Voluntary Service (WVS) in UK, Cradlr goes beyond the realm …

Designer's position and authority have long been challenged. However, “Design” has only recently stated responsibility for its direct impact on social structures (Escobar, 2017; Fry, 1999; Maze, 2019). Among many new “Designs”, there is an emerging decolonizing design movement in which members pursue ontological change rather than additive diversifying measures that would only uphold and sustain colonial institutions and systems. This paper focuses on design critiques related to Design’s ability to perpetuate coloniality. Starting from our lived experiences, we expand on how Design alienates different worldviews by promoting, appropriating, and erasing the subaltern population. Following that, we present our methodological …
When It Happens Here: Reproductive Autonomy, Fascism, And Dobbs V. Jackson Women’S Health Organization, Robin Maril
When It Happens Here: Reproductive Autonomy, Fascism, And Dobbs V. Jackson Women’S Health Organization, Robin Maril
Pace Law Review
Within six months after the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, nineteen states passed laws prohibiting abortion within the first trimester. The most restrictive laws banned abortion entirely, except to save the life of the person giving birth. The Court’s eager abdication of its role in protecting individual liberty under the 14th amendment marks a grim chapter in the life cycle of American democracy. The Dobbs decision, along with the political environment that demanded the repeal of Roe v. Wade, promises to severely limit the role of women in public life. The specter …

Chapter Iv — Eurocentric Versus Ethio-Centric Approaches To Ethiopia’S Modernization Lag: The Concept Of Derailment, Messay Kebede
Ethiopian Modernization: Opportunities and Derailments
After studying the link between survival and modernization, the next logical step is to provide concrete answers to the question of why Ethiopia’s impressive record of survival failed to initiate a successful process of modernization. In fact, the greater the resolution to survive, the more determined should have been the drive toward modernization. Yet, not only is Ethiopia still ranked among the poorest countries, but it is also entangled in numerous internal conflicts, the primary consequence of which is an unending political instability threatening its very existence. However, before delving into the reasons for the Ethiopian failure to modernize, we …

Malfe—Malware Feature Engineering Generation Platform, Avinash Singh, Richard Adeyemi Ikuesan, Hein Venter
All Works
The growing sophistication of malware has resulted in diverse challenges, especially among security researchers who are expected to develop mechanisms to thwart these malicious attacks. While security researchers have turned to machine learning to combat this surge in malware attacks and enhance detection and prevention methods, they often encounter limitations when it comes to sourcing malware binaries. This limitation places the burden on malware researchers to create context-specific datasets and detection mechanisms, a time-consuming and intricate process that involves a series of experiments. The lack of accessible analysis reports and a centralized platform for sharing and verifying findings has resulted …
#1 On The U.S. Most Wanted List: Why The Push Is On To Ban The World’S Most Successful Startup From Academic, Government And Military Devices In The United States, Tom Waters
GNSI Publications
TikTok is a social media application that has amassed over 100 million users in the United States. Yet the Biden White House, like the Trump Administration before it, seeks to ban TikTok, or at least force it’s divestment from the parent company, Bytedance. For many the question is how can an app for sharing silly dance videos among teenagers be a national security threat? Unfortunately, the problem is considerably more complex than this simple question. TikTok’s unprecedented success comes from its powerful artificial intelligence-based algorithm.
That activity produces a comprehensive psychological profile of each user and tailors the queue of …

Ethiopian Modernization: Opportunities and Derailments
In the wake of the dethronement of the TPLF, Ethiopia was presented with four options arising from the implementation of ethnonationalist ideology and policies for 27 years. The options have generated politico-ideological movements that compete for the seizure of power in Ethiopia. Broadly speaking, these movements can be viewed as different stands in relation to Article 39 of the constitution granting ethnic groups an unconditional right to self-determination, including secession (see previous chapter). Let us briefly examine the four positions with the view of clearly demarcating the lines separating them.
Using Machine Learning To Predict Hypervelocity Fragment Propagation Of Space Debris Collisions, Katharine Larsen, Riccardo Bevilacqua
Using Machine Learning To Predict Hypervelocity Fragment Propagation Of Space Debris Collisions, Katharine Larsen, Riccardo Bevilacqua
Student Works
The future of spaceflight is threatened by the increasing amount of space debris, especially in the near-Earth environment. To continue operations, accurate characterization of hypervelocity fragment propagation following collisions and explosions is imperative. While large debris particles can be tracked by current methods, small particles are often missed. This paper presents a method to estimate fragment fly-out properties, such as fragment, velocity, and mass distributions, using machine learning. Previous work was performed on terrestrial data and associated simulations representing space debris collisions. The fragmentation of high-velocity fragmentation can be modeled by terrestrial fragmentation tests, such as static detonations. Recently, stereoscopic …

Roots To Reconciliation: Understanding Factors Influencing Violent Extremism And Rehabilitation As Imperatives, Sofia Liberti
Global Studies Senior Capstone
Islamic religion and culture are often misunderstood, misrepresented, and consequently most vilified in the world, despite comprising well over a fifth of the world population. This paper attempts to discern Islam's view on violence/non-violence, the factors that lead to religious extremism, and what countering violent extremist movements and rehabilitation look like. While it is important to recognize that this religion/faith/worldview is not understood in the same way or prioritized to the same degree by each and every Muslim, this paper hopes to become a resource for de-bunking the misguided beliefs about Islam in today's media linking ideas such as terrorism …
