Alumni Perceptions Of Cybersecurity Employment Preparation Using The Nice Framework, Tobi West
Alumni Perceptions Of Cybersecurity Employment Preparation Using The Nice Framework, Tobi West
Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations
The cybersecurity workforce suffers from an ongoing talent shortage and a lack of information correlating cybersecurity education programs to alumni employment outcomes. This cross-sectional study evaluated the post-graduation employment outcomes of alumni who attended two-year colleges designated by the National Security Agency (NSA) as Centers of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense (CAE-CD). Stakeholders of this project were identified as government agencies, the NSA, employers, faculty, students, and organizations that rely on cybersecurity talent to keep their systems secure from cyberattacks. This study used the explanatory sequential mixed methods approach to compare perceptions of the intended Program of Study work roles …
Detection Of Vulnerabilitiies In 5g Femtocell Firmware Using Static Analysis Tools, Charles H. Begian
Detection Of Vulnerabilitiies In 5g Femtocell Firmware Using Static Analysis Tools, Charles H. Begian
Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to support fifth generation (5G) wireless network security by identifying vulnerabilities in 5G femtocell firmware. It addresses the problem of whether 5G femtocells are shipped to customers with firmware that contains vulnerabilities. This is a subproblem of supply chain security. The problem is significant because exploitation of latent vulnerabilities in the firmware of 5G network access points (such as femtocells) could compromise the security of network communications.
This study employs a design science research methodology consisting of a quasi-experiment which applies static analysis tools to 5G femtocell firmware samples. It seeks to answer the …

The Legacy Of War: A Holistic Analysis Of Socio-Economic And Healthcare Resources For People Affected By Agent Orange In Việt Nam, Ashley Malone
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The war between the United States of America and Northern Việt Nam lasting from 1955 to 1975 did not end with the removal of American troops from Vietnamese soil, but it rears its ugly head daily in the lives of those affected by Agent Orange and other various Rainbow Dioxins utilized as herbicides. This paper delves into the enduring legacy of the Resistance War Against America, specifically focusing on the socio-economic and medical ramifications for families and individuals affected by Agent Orange that persist half a century after its prohibition. The study scrutinizes the disparities in aid between American veterans …

For The Ones Who Endured So That A Nation Might Live: A Plea To The Mississippi Legislature And Judiciary To Amend Miss. Code. Ann. 9-25-1 And Adopt A Mississippi Statewide Veterans Treatment Court, Hannah Grace Eckel
MC Law Review
Veterans provide an invaluable service to protect and defend the ideals of this nation. Today, there are roughly 18 million veterans living in the United States, and Mississippi is home to over 187,000. While many servicemen successfully integrate back into civilian life, trauma and addiction follow others which often leads to confrontations with the criminal justice system. The traditional Mississippi court system is ineffective for many veterans because the underlying issues that led to their incarceration cannot be treated with mere confinement.
Veterans Treatment Courts (VTCs) address the underlying issues that often lead to criminal activity and offer a veteran …

Virtual Urban Siege: Modern Urban Siege And Swarming In Culiacán 2019 & 2023, Daniel Weisz Argomedo, Nathan P. Jones, Ph.D., John P. Sullivan, Ph.D.
Journal of Strategic Security
Modern urban siege is a metaphor for evolved urban campaigns. The template for such attacks draws from the tactics seen in the 26/11 Mumbai attack in 2008, and continued with the 2013 Westgate Mall attack in Kenya, the January 2015 Charlie Hebdo and Hyper Cacher attacks in Paris and the November 2015 attacks against the Stade de France and Bataclan. These virtual sieges employ swarming tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) to provide a template for urban strife and insecurity. This article provides an overview of terrorist swarming tactics, expanding the aperture to review the use of similar TTPs by criminal …

Urban Disaster Wrought By Man: The Battle For Manila, 1945, Russell W. Glenn
Urban Disaster Wrought By Man: The Battle For Manila, 1945, Russell W. Glenn
Journal of Strategic Security
Urban warfare tends to be intimate. If soldiers do not see the faces of those they kill—and they frequently will—those men and women will hear the screams or muffled groans of the wounded. US forces waging the battle to recapture Manila in 1945 experienced these horrors. Yet it was the noncombatants who suffered far more; 100,000—approximately one of every ten Manileños at the time—died during the fighting. Thousands more suffered wounds, disease, or struggled with hunger and malnutrition. Recent fighting in Syria, Ukraine, Khartoum, and elsewhere tells us too little has changed three-quarters of a century later.
Though urban warfare …

Gender Undone: Confronting Bias In The Nuclear Field, Sneha Nair, Christina Mcallister, Annina Pluff, Katherine C. Mack
International Journal of Nuclear Security
In the face of evolving security needs, diversity is critical in nonproliferation, nuclear security, and other related fields. Despite multiple studies highlighting the need for gender balance and diversity in the nuclear nonproliferation and security space and targeted recruitment and capacity-building efforts by the International Atomic Energy Agency and states, gains in the representation of women (as well as historically underrepresented groups) have been set back by the gendered effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and slow cultural change at nuclear facilities and organizations. This issue is in large part due to the inability of initiatives aimed at diversity, equity, inclusion, …

Assessing The Threat Of Social Media To National Security: Information Operations In The 21st Century, Brendan M. Cullen
Assessing The Threat Of Social Media To National Security: Information Operations In The 21st Century, Brendan M. Cullen
Senior Theses
The ubiquity of social media has enabled an unprecedented amount of personal data to be accessible to various entities. Social media platforms leverage this data to optimize algorithmic recommendation systems, persuade users to engage, and promote monetization. The social media ecosystem’s business model demands continuous engagement and the relentless collection of user data to grow and scale. Not only is social media massively popular around the world, but it has integrated heavily into users’ daily lives. This integration is driven by social platforms’ deliberate architectures and affordances. The intentionality of social media can be exploited by state and non-state actors …

The Paradox Of The Paradox Of Democracy, Raymond H. Brescia
The Paradox Of The Paradox Of Democracy, Raymond H. Brescia
Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)
In The Paradox of Democracy: Free Speech, Open Media, and Perilous Persuasion, authors Zac Gershberg and Sean Illing argue that democracies contain the capacity for their own destruction because they promote open communication but such communication can be manipulated by authoritarian forces. They argue further that with contemporary communications technologies the descent into fascism is even more likely. The authors argue that in order to confront these threats, democratic nations must increase media literacy within the citizenry and strengthen local journalism. Given the grave nature of the threats the authors have exposed, these solutions do not appear up to …
Artificial Intelligence And Urban Operations, Anthony King
Artificial Intelligence And Urban Operations, Anthony King
Journal of Strategic Security
It is widely believed that AI is about to revolutionise military operations. Many scholars have claimed that AI-enabled lethal autonomous weapons, especially drone swarms, are about to take over the battlefield. This article assesses the merits of those claims in relation to urban operations. Examining the cases of the Joint Special Operations Command in Baghdad in 2004-08 and the IDF's Operation Guardian of the Walls in 2021, it argues that AI will primarily be for military intelligence and targeting, rather than lethal autonomy.

The National Security Consequences Of The Major Questions Doctrine, Timothy Meyer, Ganesh Sitaraman
The National Security Consequences Of The Major Questions Doctrine, Timothy Meyer, Ganesh Sitaraman
Michigan Law Review
The rise of the major questions doctrine—the rule that says that in order to delegate to the executive branch the power to resolve a “question of ‘deep economic and political significance’ that is central to [a] statutory scheme,” Congress must do so expressly—threatens to unmake the modern executive’s authority over foreign affairs, especially in matters of national security and interstate conflict. In the twenty-first century, global conflicts increasingly involve economic warfare, rather than (or in addition to) the force of arms.
In the United States, the executive power to levy economic sanctions and engage in other forms of economic warfare …
Mental Health In The African American Church: Dismantling The Stigma Of Treatment And Services, Sonya R. Mccurdy
Mental Health In The African American Church: Dismantling The Stigma Of Treatment And Services, Sonya R. Mccurdy
Doctor of Ministry (DMin)
The purpose of this study is to identify the prevailing mental health perspectives of African American spiritual leaders and to analyze how their views on this subject are communicated to their congregations. Historically, research has demonstrated that African American clergy have admonished congregants for seeking mental health care from mental health professionals instead of seeking God. Twelve African American and Caucasian American spiritual leaders were interviewed. According to the interview results, spiritual leaders' personal beliefs about mental health impact their perspectives on mental health services, which determines their receptiveness and support––or lack thereof––of mental health services. The research concluded that …

‘The Table’, Exploration And Discussion On The Future Form Of Board Games, Boyuan Zheng
Theses
Board games, also known as tabletop games, are one of the most popular forms of games ever invented in history. Over time, the game designs have become more intricate, as have the physical game sets, resulting in larger and larger boxes. However, in a world where portability and intelligence are key factors in technology, digitalization appears to be the way forward. This project aims to explore the essence of board games and envision a possible future of board game system digitalization with existing or foreseeable technologies.

Theses and Dissertations
Social media applications are increasingly seen as a national security threat and a cause for concern because they can be used to create user profiles on government personnel and on US citizens. These profiles could be used for big data and artificial intelligence purposes of interest to foreign governments. With the rise of big data and AI being used, foreign governments could use this data for a variety of purposes that can affect normal everyday citizens, not just high value personnel. IoT (Internet of Things) devices that the population uses everyday can also pose the same threat. These devices can …
